All other schools I've applied to have kept me informed of my status - SU has not updated their info on-line for me - I've called them - I've resubmitted material...is anyone else having trouble with SU?

Their web site says 3/15...

Was in talking to my daughter's counselor last week; he had in his hands the most recent newsletter for high school counselors from SU; in this newsletter, there was an article about upcoming receptions for newly admitted students. In the Chicago area, that date is, I think around March 28th (or first week in April - there were some other dates thrown out for other issues, but I know it was either 3/28 or first week of April because we'll be out of town and unable to attend if my daughter is accepted.
Having said this, if they want newly accepted students to attend this reception, then they have to give them at least a week's notice that they're in, so they can arrange their schedule to attend. So I would think those in the Chicago area must be hearing within the next week or so.
What I want to know is why isn't this board as active as others? I've been reading UNC and BU - there are many new posts daily. It would be nice to see applicants posting here so others could be alerted to letters/e-mail they're getting from SU.
What are other's stats? My daughter is ACT 31; SAT 1330; rank 9/512; WGPA: 4.18; UWGPA: 3.95; six AP classes/several honors classes (only 2 B's in high school); newspaper editor/showchoir/NHS/other minor miscellaneous.
Also applied to UNC, BU and has been accepted to U/Illinois-Champaign-Urbana and Penn State. We'll be gone over spring break and I'm afraid the letters will come while we're gone - we wish they'd come before so she'd have an answer either way. UNC is her first choice, but we're having major doubts about it, considering she's out of state and has no legacy. Oh well.

I got into SU! Its not my top choice (being that I really don't like cold weather, otherwise it'd be a great school), but I'm really happy to get into the International Relations program. So I'll know i'm quite set if I go there.
My stats were: 1170 SATs (sorta low), rank...made it into the top 25% just last marking period, 3.47 GPA, and I went to study abroad in Japan last year--so i guess its a big plus.
Now i'm waiting for Georgetown, Tufts, Northeastern, American and George Washington. Good Luck to everyone else!!

I'm a little confused about the difference in Newhouse's film program and that at the SVU. Oh well, I guess I'll look into it further if Syracuse becomes more of a reality.
Still waiting to hear from Vassar (got deferred), Brown, NYU, BU, Colgate, and U Michigan. I got into Ithaca film program on Friday.

This school is so disorganized. I was rejected, and I was really hurt. I was WAY ahead on stats than what they asked for. I had a few alumni connections, strong extracurrics...15 AP classes in high school. I was flat out rejected, not even waitlisted. I hate to sound arrogant, but could this have been a mistake? My guidance said this was a saftey, and with my connections, I think I should have been at least waitlisted. My stats were not high, but they were above average for the school. That could have been a factor. They kept losing parts of my application, so I think they have problems with their administration and organization. But if they messed up with Synapse, then maybe I have a chance they made an error with me. Should I call the school and ask what went wrong? I don't want to be another rejected student harassing the administration, but I just can't understand it. Maybe I forgot something in my application...i dunno. Or maybe I am just underestimating the school. It is probably me.
By Whitney (Whitney) on Monday, March 22, 2004 - 10:23 pm: Edit
if you don't get in to any other school, then call. but if your going somewhere else anywho, then don't bother calling.
By Steph0503 (Steph0503) on Monday, March 22, 2004 - 10:35 pm: Edit
maybe they looked at essays a lot? I don't know but I had pretty low stats, but the fact that I went to study abroad and wrote pretty good essays probably helped a lot. I forgot what i put on the app for school since i got into arts and sciences, but there were a lot of choices and maybe synapse just didn't get first choice school??
But like what whitney said, only call if you don't get into anywhere else or else it would just be an extra hassle for you and the adcom.

Is anyone still waiting to hear from SU? If so, please post to which program you applied. My daughter is waiting on musical theater. I can understand that an audition or portfolio program would take longer but this seems like forever! Thanks!
By Feath17 (Feath17) on Tuesday, March 23, 2004 - 03:33 pm: Edit
Although I'm going to SU next year, I have also realized that they are not very organized. I also agree with Steph, I think that they weigh essays rather heavily. Also, about calling the school, I'm not sure if they would tell you but I have heard of instances in my school where the guidance councelor has called schools wondering why people were not accepted and the schools gave the guidance councelor valid excuses so you might want to try doing that. Also, I'm sorry that you were not accepted. Good luck with your other schools!

Dcmom3,my best friend heard that he got into the Syracuse musical theater program last week and we live in Illinois so your daughter should hear anytime now. I am also waiting to hear...I said that my first choice school was Newhouse but I would be happy with the school of arts and sciences. Earlier this year I was asked to submit my first marking period grades. Was anyone else asked to submit those? Has anyone else from the Mid-West heard from Syracuse cause I'm still waiting?
By Steph0503 (Steph0503) on Wednesday, March 24, 2004 - 03:44 pm: Edit
I submitted in my first marking period grades along with my transcripts voluntarily when I sent in my whole application simply because I didn't have any grades or credits from my junior year and this one big stamp saying I went to study abroad in Japan. My soph year grades were horrible, and I wanted to show them how I changed over the past year with my senior year grades consisting of mostly As and such while taking an 8per day with no lunch.

Nswnsw - we live in the Chicago suburbs and my daughter got her admission decision on-line 3/15. She got accepted into Newhouse, and with her rejection today at UNC-Chapel Hill, it looks like Syracuse it is.
Also, several days after her on-line decision was posted, she got a letter telling her she had also received the Syracuse University Founders Scholarship, so even if she had gotten into UNC, unless they offered her scholarship, it would have cost more than Syracuse, so she was leaning that way anyway.
By Teriwtt (Teriwtt) on Wednesday, March 24, 2004 - 08:50 pm: Edit
OK... BIG CORRECTION to that last post. I was mixing up our schools. It was actually Boston U. that she got her acceptance decision on-line. So back to the original question. My daughter's letter from Syracuse came in the mail on 3/15. And we live in the Chicago burbs. Sorry about the misinformation.

Ok, what is with Syracuse? There is a reception for accepted students in our area on Monday night and this is Thursday and we still know nothing. Does that mean my kid is rejected? At her audition they said notification would be early to mid-march. One girl at her high school (different major) got a phone call on March 10 to say she was accepted. Does anybody know what is going on?

If you get really nervous about it, call. I got mine March 13, and I live in NJ. Then yesterday I got a call from Syracuse to congratulate me and telling me about visiting in April. If that happened to me, I would definately let them know whether by phone or email to see if something went wrong. It sometimes doesn't mean that your kid got reject. Good Luck!

Steph, thanks, I am going to call again today!! I called this past Monday and was told "her application is still being reviewed." Two out of 3 kids who applied to SU at her high school have not heard. My daughter is applying to musical theater and I see from postings here that some people have already heard regarding that program. Aaarrrgh! Is there anyone else on this board still waiting to hear from SU???
By Nanners20 (Nanners20) on Friday, March 26, 2004 - 09:24 am: Edit
If you havn't heard from syracuse it is probably because you were rejected. It looks as though they have only let the accepted studdents know. At least for Musical Theatre.
By Nswnsw (Nswnsw) on Friday, March 26, 2004 - 05:12 pm: Edit
Nanners, i do not think that is true because no one has heard from my school who applied to any other programs besides musical theater. I think only people who auditioned at the school or sent in a portfolio have heard.
By Dcmom3 (Dcmom3) on Friday, March 26, 2004 - 05:22 pm: Edit
Called Monday and was told her application was still being reviewed. Called today and was told review is complete and she will hear in a few weeks. A FEW WEEKS!?!? Admissions said applications are up 20 percent this year (that's what happens when you win an NCAA championship--same thing happened last year to U of MD.) Others from her high school are still waiting to hear--all different majors. The only time my d. saw Syracuse, it was blizzard conditions and minus ten wind chill. We would have to go see it again if she gets in but time is running out. She got in to Boston U's BFA acting program and is very psyched about that so Syracuse may get rolled over by the momentum of BU. Reaction time has a lot of impact on these decisions.
So, for those of you still waiting, I hope the admissions office was exaggerating when they said a few weeks. Good luck to those standing vigil by the mailbox.

Well yes I'm a freshman in college applying to Syracuse as a transfer student and I haven't received my letter yet. I called Syracuse and they said that they start mailing off transfer letters as early as mid March to as late as early May. So maybe that's what they're doing with some of you all that are applying for freshman admissions. I DON'T KNOW. I wish you all the best.

FYI- My son in Ma. heard from Syracuse by snail mail on March 13, with merit scholarship offer @ 1 week later. At local info session last night, they stated that scholarship offers are made "subjectively"(taking into account different factors for each student,no set criteria) at time of admission decision. Son's friend heard positively from Syracuse @ the same time, though no merit $ were offered. It's a big school and I'm surprised that their mtgs. don't coincide with admissions decisions.
By Sep2000 (Sep2000) on Tuesday, March 30, 2004 - 11:00 pm: Edit
Just saw the question re: Summer Start program. After mtg. last night felt this idea has particular relevance given the size of the school. It seems like it would allow one to accrue 2-3 course credits while simultaneously figuring out a large school, especially if you are not in a smaller, specific program. One admissions counselor stated that they encourage freshman to get their academic footing prior to starting most ECs. This makes sense, but at the same time, ECs seem especially important when trying to assimilate to a big place with BIG intro. classes. If my S were to attend, I'd lean heavily towards considering this program.

Smeralda, we visited with our D before she applied and are going back up next week for the admitted student program. The campus is very nice, you just need to get used to seeing it covered with a lot of snow. Lots of architecturally interesting buildings, including some historic structures. The city of Syracuse is not a bustling metropolis, but it is not as bad as some people have described it to me. There are places to go within walking distance, including Marshal Street (I think that's the name) which has coffe shops, restaurants, bars, etc. You would probably need a car to see other parts of the city, though I'll get a better handle on this when I go back. Good luck!

Dcmom3, our D received her acceptance letter about two weeks ago, however we have friends with a daughter that has not yet heard, and she is a theatre major.
Our D also was accepted to BU. I noticed in your earlier post that your D also was accepted to BU. Our D has not decided yet. Any preferences and comments on SU vs. BU? Good luck!!
By Dcmom3 (Dcmom3) on Saturday, April 03, 2004 - 11:07 pm: Edit
To Lvdad, we are visiting BU in 2 weeks along with the Emerson open house. She is 90 percent leaning to BU. Even if SU comes through, the timing has kinda soured her and there's not much time to take a second look. Timing, momentum and emotion have a lot to do with these college decisions. BU is more diverse, has a great reputation for its theater dept and to compare the cities is unfair. She knows a couple of kids who love SU so I guess it depends on what you want.

Has anyone heard anything yet about financial aid or scholarships? Just curious to see when stuff is going out. I only got my acceptance letter to the School of Visual Arts last Tuesday but I was hoping to find out soon whether or not they came through with enough money!

I was accepted in mid-March and received my financial aid package at the end of March. I received my merit scholarship offer ($6,000/yr) a day after I received my acceptance letter.
Good luck to all those who are still waiting. I'll be there next fall (unless NYU miraculously pulls me off the waitlist), so I hope to see some of you around on campus. I'll be the one freezing in the Syracuse cold. We definitely don't experience those kind of winters in Hawaii!

Sorry to not have responded to earlier posts regarding my D's acceptance letter (we just got back from spring break today). Yes, her letter came 3/15, and info about her merit scholarship a couple of days later. While we were on vacation, another letter came inviting her to join the honors program. She's thrilled, and as I'm still unpacking she's asking me to write her deposit check to hold her spot! Sorry to hear others have not heard yet.
My D had also gotten into BU, but we hadn't heard about scholarship... it came while we were gone (along with her reject letter from UNC), but BU only offered $10,000/year vs. SU $12,000/year. Also BU has not sent anything regarding honors programs, so SU it is.
We're in the northwest suburbs... Mundelein. Heard of it?

Just back from Spring Reception at SU. We were extremely impressed with the school. Faculty and staff were accessible, students were friendly and supportive, and opportunities abound. Though a large university, personal connections were easily made and my son feels that at least a handful of people/organizations will be welcoming him in the fall. For people on the fence, maybe considering smaller LACs, I'd say it's worth checking out. Despite the April snow, mood on campus was upbeat. Good luck to all as you make your college choices.

By Teriwtt (Teriwtt) on Saturday, May 01, 2004 - 10:24 pm: Edit
My D's rank is 9/470; ACT: 31; weighted GPA: 4.187; EC's: news editor of school newspaper, drama club, showchoir, NHS, bi-weekly guest columnist of 2nd largest daily newspaper in Chicago area; 15 honors/AP classes in high school; fantastic recommendations
She applied to both Newhouse and arts and science (in case she didn't get into Newhouse); I would love to know how many incoming freshman Newhouse accepts each year. Anyone know?
By Feath17 (Feath17) on Sunday, May 02, 2004 - 02:03 pm: Edit
I got into Newhouse under Early Decision (for the Television, Radio, and Film major) so it was probably easier than if I had applied under Regular Decision. I was ranked 42/689, 1310 highest combined SATI (I had also taken the SAT IIs), weighted GPA 4.493? 4.495? can't quite remember right now. I had a job for awhile in my junior year, had another job with my school's television station (mainly directing) since the beginning of my junior year and still doing it, NHS, Italian Honor Society, Italian Club(4yrs), Class Council(first 2 yrs), I had over 100 hours of community service. I also had 15 honors/AP courses throughout high school. I worked very hard on my essays (which I think Syracuse looks heavily on essays), I went for the interview and also kept in touch with the admissions officer that interviewed me. I had three great recommendations – one from my 11th grade English teacher (also the head of the English Department), my 11th and 12th grade Italian teacher, and my 11th grade psychology teacher.
Like Teriwtt's D, I had also applied to arts and science as my second choice. Also to Teriwtt - I don't quite know how many they accept each year but I believe that the incoming class to Newhouse each year is somewhere in the 200s.

Hi, I was wondering if Syracuse sent any housing forms that allows us to customize our dorming arrangements. Some colleges let their students have a voice in the roommate situation by having them fill out a survey.
By Teriwtt (Teriwtt) on Wednesday, May 26, 2004 - 06:32 pm: Edit
SU has no housing forms that allow you to make any requests, other than if you want to house with other honors program students (which my daughter did not, although she will be in the honors program). You don't get any info about your dorm/roommate until the first week of August, which sucks because you can't even buy sheets - different dorms have different sized beds - some are standard twin and others are extra-long twin.
By Reesespieces112 (Reesespieces112) on Thursday, May 27, 2004 - 07:43 pm: Edit
Actually from what I've been told (from multiple sources including students) is that all of the dorms have standard twin and that you need to request extra-long. This better be the case, I already bought my sheets!!!
By Teriwtt (Teriwtt) on Thursday, May 27, 2004 - 10:31 pm: Edit
I copied and pasted this from the SU website: http://housingmealplans.syr.edu/handbook/handbook_services.shtml
North Campus: All rooms are furnished with beds (mattresses: standard twin size 36"x75"), dressers, mirrors, curtains, closet space, mattress pads, desks, and chairs. The exceptions are Brewster/Boland, Kimmel, and Marion halls, which are furnished with long beds (36"x80"); Washington Arms, which is furnished with beds measuring 38"x75"; and Brewster/Boland’s open double with study carrel rooms where desks and chairs are available in each student’s private study carrel rather than in the student’s bedroom. All student rooms are carpeted. Long beds (36"x80") are available upon request while supplies last.
This is why we've waited to buy sheets.

Has anyone who has taken AP courses gotten their scores? As I try to translate what classes my daughter gets credit for, for her AP tests, it's very confusing. In the undergrad catalog, it's hard to tell how many class credits you get for certain scores on certain tests. For example, a 4 on Eng Lit/Comp lists class credits for ETS 151, 152, 153, 295 or 296. Do you pick one of those, or is it all (or some combination in between).
