Thats about it. Congrats all, and good luck RD'ers! Also, who here got the Walsch engineering merit scholarship? I didn't, but I think Dimples247 did. Dimples, what are your stats?

By Angrod (Angrod) on Monday, February 09, 2004 - 03:02 pm: Edit

Dr_Slc, I got the Trustees Distinguished Scholarship, but that is it. Matthias, yeah the packet only contains merit awards, not the financial aid packet. Echoing Dr_Slc's question, who else got some merit scholarships?

By Laxgirl04 (Laxgirl04) on Monday, February 09, 2004 - 09:58 pm: Edit

I got the Century and Trustees Distinguished Scholarship (32k + 6k + research opp). I'd also get about 750 a year for National Merit.

1590, 1/500, 4.0, 800, 770, 710. Too lazy to detail extracurrics but did debate, youth group, lacrosse, and lots of writing things. National level awards in some cases.

I'm really confused as if I'll go there, seeing as I was accepted to Harvard EA and am a finalist for Emory Scholars and etc. Seems like a good problem to have, but a problem nonetheless. HELP!

damn. any normal people get in?

By Abz1986 (Abz1986) on Monday, February 09, 2004 - 11:55 pm: Edit

I dunno...

maybe since this is a Rice Board, I am shamelessly promoting this college through whatever means necessary :)

If you ask this at Harvard board, you'll get a very different response.

Most people would choose Havard over Rice (I probably would too :)) namely because of Havard's immense prestige (well you got the scholarship, so that may be different), but each has its pros and cons, and I will be [Sarcasm]bold[/sarcasm] enough as to say there are areas where Rice is better than Havard is.

I got the $8,000/year Trustees Distinguished Scholarship. I need to see the rest of the package and see what the trade-off is against HYP.

By Wobudong (Wobudong) on Tuesday, February 10, 2004 - 11:33 pm: Edit

Abz: Everyone who picked Harvard would of course advise Harvard over any other. My son passed on Yale and Duke in favor of Rice and is glad that he did. Where else can you find a major research university with fewer than 3000 undergrads, Division 1 athletics and a residential college system? Not to mention a world class music conservatory to add a bit of artistic diversity. For anyone who is not eligible for need-based aid, Rice is by far the best undergraduate education value in the US.

By Abz1986 (Abz1986) on Wednesday, February 11, 2004 - 01:37 am: Edit

^ Yes, precisely why I choose Rice... add or subtract a few reasons :)

By Duder (Duder) on Wednesday, February 11, 2004 - 03:09 am: Edit

Congratulations to people.

If anyone has any questions, I'm a junior (second-year, really) at Rice studying physics and applied mathematics (I also got that Trustee Distinguished thing someone mentioned above) -- feel free to drop me a line at faisal@plan-c.net (forwards to my primary account).

Also: LAX, my roommate from last year got the Century thing, and there are a couple of people in the program that turned down Yale and Harvard as well. So if you want anymore information, contact me.

Best of luck to you guys over the rest of the admissions season.

By Angrod (Angrod) on Wednesday, February 11, 2004 - 11:16 am: Edit

Hey Duder! Thanks for opening yourself up for questions. I don't know if you know anything about financial aid at Rice, but I was wondering what their financial aid grants cover; just tuition, or room and board also? Does the Trustee Distinguished scholarship cover student loans and work study, or is that amount taken out of your grants? I don't know if you can answer any of these, they have just been on my mind since the $$$ is a big part of my college selection.

What are your impressions of the engineering program at Rice? I know you aren't an engineering major yourself, but at least your in science! :) Thanks a bunch!

By Laxgirl04 (Laxgirl04) on Wednesday, February 11, 2004 - 11:32 am: Edit

Duder, I would love to hear more from the kids who turned down HY. I am very confused as to my decision! =) Also, my parents are leaning more towards H, and sort of think it is a waste for me to fly to Houston to visit. But that's crucial for me to make a decision. Is there a way to negotiate with the admissions office to get my airfare covered =)? I am not appyling for financial aid this year due to extenuating circumstances.

By Aly55a8 (Aly55a8) on Wednesday, February 11, 2004 - 10:57 pm: Edit

yeah, i am pretty much in the same place as you laxgirl. I recieved the same scholarships but also a likely letter from yale. People seem to think I am crazy for even considering passing on yale, but i guess it all comes down to me.

By Wobudong (Wobudong) on Thursday, February 12, 2004 - 08:17 pm: Edit

Laxgirl and Aly: With an advance purchase ticket it will cost you<$500 to visit. If Rice is offering you merit aid and H or Y offer only the privilege of being there, then H&Y will cost you 100k more? For what? A designer label? Blow a weekend and a few bucks and check out all of your options.

Congratulations!!! for all you who got into Rice. My daughter who got 1600, 800/800/800, 5 in 5 APs, National Merit Finalist, 5/612 rank in public school, president of 2 national clubs, volunteering in hospital, Tutoring 10 hrs/wk for SAT, and some more ECs., got waitlisted in Rice. Can anybody explain why? We are from Houston.

By Scetoaux (Scetoaux) on Friday, April 02, 2004 - 11:14 pm: Edit

Hi sugarlandmom. I was very shocked to see that your D was waitlisted with such incredible credentials, but from what I know, the admissions office tries to emphasize the sort of subjective things like how the interview went (if you had one), the essay, the short answer stuff, the box, etc.. How do you think those parts of the application were?

Also from what I understand, Houston people have a much harder challenge of getting accepted because there are so many Houston area applicants. I heard on my over-night visit that 25% are from Houston, another 25% from the rest of Texas and 50% from elsewhere. This seems like a good breakdown to me, but it certainly makes it tough for Houstonians.

Namaste to everyone..
I'm Nafeeza, new to College Confidential...

I'm suprised to say, I was admitted to the Rice Class of 2008.

My credentials come no where close to the credentials of everyone else. I'm so sorry to those waitlisted, because their stats are 100x better than mine.

SAT- 1100
ACT- 27
SAT2- 610/570/610
13/183

My stats truly do not come close to everyone elses's...which is why I'm wondering..

What exactly does Rice look for?

I have no clue about Rice University.
Is this school prestigious?
Is this school known for something?

Why is Rice good?

If someone could please let me know, it would help me realize if I should be grateful for this acceptance, or regard it as another school just wanting to fill it's class up.

Hey everyone, and it's cool to see how many
people have gotten accepted to Rice. I live about 30 minutes north of Houston, and I know many of my classmates who also got accepted. I'm going to Owl Weekend as well, and I hope to meet all of you there. My SATs are ok, but not nearly as impressive as others.

SAT I: 1460 780/680
SAT II: 800/780/740/720

For anyone who's wondering about Rice, I know quite little for someone who's lived so close to it(since I figure it's easy to check up on) besides that it's very likely the most prestigious school in the southern US. Some majors I hear about quite often are Engineering, Architecture, and Pre-Med. The research facilities are very advanced state-of-the art too. Of course, I'm going to be an Engineering major (regardless of whether I go to Rice) so I didn't look too deep into the liberal arts majors. The surrounding area is absolutely beautiful (like the campus) and the museums of Natural Science, Fine Arts, etc. are also within walking distance. Rice admits about 760 undergrad students a year so it's really awesome that it's such a small student population. The only possible down-side may be that you might not like the Houston weather. That's all I can think of for now, and hope to meet some of you guys soon.
