plays trumpet like a mofo though. Carnegie hall playing, plays in all these selective ensembles, orchestras, and the like. he also has his own rock band.

Yeah, a lot more information than that would be necessary to even make an educated guess. The SAT scores for NYU freshmen this year were middle 50% scored between 1300 and 1450, so your friend would be below that. He'd also be below the usual GPA since the most competitive applicants have an A/A- average in a strong curriculum. Playing the trumpet well would really only be of major importance if he were auditioning for one of the music programs.

I kno someone who plays sax like a mofo and got in ED, and I'm thinking her stats weren't THAT impressive (a few challenging classes but not too successful).

I would think that if he played at Carnegie Hall, he'd be in at NYU music school. If they don't accept him then they don't know what they're doing.
