I thought Schreyer Honors College at PSU deserved its own board so I made it! My question is: How much merit money does the average Schreyer kid receive at PSU? I know every Schreyer student gets 2500 dollars right off the bat, but I was wondering if most people get more =P Thanks in advance.
Oh, and the response date for Schreyer is 2/16/04! Everyone can place their happy "I Got In!" messages here =)

im in schreyer and im wondering if being in the honors college is really any better than the normal college. I know about class selection and dorms, but i was hoping for something more than that. wat abour opps for research and facility use, do we get preference? does the honors college compare to CMU? could i get into grad skool at MIT or Stanford coming out of PSU?

Being a huge university, Penn State offers all the opportunities that any other school offers...including any Ivy League school. But, the problem (with 80,000 students) is getting those opportunities.
Schreyer students get all of the opportunities, generally. One of the greatest things about Schreyer, I think, is that students get to travel all over the world (for Honors classes)...and Penn State pays for it! Also, Schreyer boasts a 100% placement rate for grad school.
And I'd think that Schreyer would compare to CMU. Some people say PSU-Schreyer is equivalent to going to an Ivy league or Top 25 school. Others say it's meaningless. So, taking an average of the two opinions - I'd say it's AT LEAST as comparable as CMU.

I had a friend that went through the honors college at PSU and I can say that it can definetly compete with any of the top schools in terms of the quality of education and of course with PSU being one of the country's best research universities (over a half billion, yes billion, spent on research last year) there research opportunities just can't be found at most schools.
In terms of getting into grad school, the person I knew applied in the sciences... only applied to three schools MIT, Harvard, and Berkeley and got into all three with no problems. Also, the honors college can claim an amazing success rate in prestegious undergraduate and graduate fellowship competitions such as the Marshall and Rhodes Scholarships (I think the honors college has had three Marshall scholars in the last two years, which is quite impressive and better than almost all the Ivies). In short I think the PSU program can provide an education that is AT LEAST on par with any of the top schools and possible even better... the students and stats speak for themselves.

another thing i was worried about, the honors college accepts students from the normal college during (i think) junior year. Does this mean that a lot more than 300 (however many are accepted per freshman year)are in it by junior year?

what are advantages in terms of like taking advanced classes in (specifically)math/science etc?
what if u took advanced courses without going to honors college? is this possible i mean do they allow non-honors people to take them if they are qualified etc..?
and lastly what constitutes honor courses?
heres the site containing list of math courses i dont see any H or any mark etc how do we know if the class is honors?..
http://www.psu.edu/bulletins/bluebook/$scmenu.html

This is from what I know, but obviously it's also worth asking these questions during a visit or phone call ect...
what if u took advanced courses without going to honors college? is this possible i mean do they allow non-honors people to take them if they are qualified etc..?
- Typically with the permission of the instructor non-honors students are allowed to take honors classes if there are any spots left in the class after honors students have scheduled (honors students schedule classses before everyone else).
and lastly what constitutes honor courses?
- It really varries by class, but the courses are always much smaller than the non-honors version... and also grades are often based more on projects and presentations vs. just more weight towards exams. Generally the material normally covered in the non-honors version of that course is covered, but a slightly faster pace to allow for the inclusion of other additional outside info that wouldn't normally be include. For example, in a science class... there might be class discussions on various new research coming out related to the current topics of discussion as opposed to just learning the material and then moving on... if you're really curious then visit PSU and sit in on a few classes (just call up and I'm sure they'd be happy to set you up).
heres the site containing list of math courses i dont see any H or any mark etc how do we know if the class is honors?..
- Honors courses generally have an "H" after them... there are defiently honors math courses. The link you listed dosen't seem to work, but perhaps you just were not looking on the right list... I think there are honors versions of all the major math courses including Calc I (similar to AB AP test), Calc II (similar to BC AP test), Diff Eq, Lin Algebra / Matricies, and multivariable calc from what I remember.

Does anyone know what percentage of people they accept? I would guess that it would be fairly high since so many people use them as a safety.
Have you ever heard of someone who filled out the whole application and ended up being reject?
I want to know because I am considering applying, but I don't want to take to time to write all those essays if I don't have a good shot at getting in. Right now my best SAT at one sitting is 1350(the only time I took the test) and my GPA is about 98%. I am taking the SATs again in October and should get about 1400. Do I have a good shot at getting in?
