ok question everybody. what's the social atmosphere at Colgate? I know theres a huge emphasis on sports... is there a lot of drinking? I'm not adverse to alcohol... but its difficult to abstain or at least take in moderation in an immersion situation. From what i've heard there's obviously a lot of drinking everywhere but how prevalent is it on the Colgate campus?

Onemanarmy, how'd you find out three days ago -- before the Fedex today?
By Collegeparent (Collegeparent) on Friday, March 26, 2004 - 11:26 pm: Edit
Onemanarmy, saw your postings on the Middlebury forum and realize that the hockey coach probably tipped you off before Fedex could get to you. Know you applied to Yale & Middlebury, but trust me, you'll be soon yelling, Go 'Gate!

So if you didn't receive a Fed Ex yesterday is it over?
By Caliel130 (Caliel130) on Sunday, March 28, 2004 - 12:54 am: Edit
hey guys, i got in yesterday
No Fed Ex here tho txtaximom, just regular ol' mail, so don't lose hope yet!
By Txtaximom (Txtaximom) on Sunday, March 28, 2004 - 01:04 am: Edit
That's great news Caliel! I'm glad there will be some snail mail admits, too. whew!
By Busymom (Busymom) on Sunday, March 28, 2004 - 12:26 pm: Edit
Why are some FEDEX and the others snail mail? D's was snail mail too, received on Sat 3/27. Are the fedex'd students more desirable?
By Collegeparent (Collegeparent) on Sunday, March 28, 2004 - 12:44 pm: Edit
Only Fedexes are the ones mentioned above by Onemanarmy and Trubuluder, so gotta ask them. Maybe there were problems with their regular delivery service and Colgate accommodated them. Please don't think they were any more special than anyone else; that's not Colgate's style.
By Culovv (Culovv) on Sunday, March 28, 2004 - 01:26 pm: Edit
I also got fed-ex. I live on the west coast... that may be the reason.
By Caliel130 (Caliel130) on Sunday, March 28, 2004 - 01:42 pm: Edit
yeah i live on the east coast, so maybe they snailed us and fedexed west coast...
By Busymom (Busymom) on Sunday, March 28, 2004 - 04:29 pm: Edit
East Coast too
By Reidmc (Reidmc) on Sunday, March 28, 2004 - 07:26 pm: Edit
Colgate clearly did differentiate among admits (Fedex v. snail mail) and I'm sure they would tell you why. But it doesn't make any difference - an acceptance is an acceptance. Everybody gets to go to the same school. Congratulations to all!

I got in as an alumni memorial scholar yet they sent me the acceptance by USPS.. so IMHO it doesn't matter how they sent it.
By Botoed (Botoed) on Friday, April 02, 2004 - 05:35 pm: Edit
what exactly is an alumni memorial scholar? does anyone know?
By Collegeparent (Collegeparent) on Friday, April 02, 2004 - 05:45 pm: Edit
You can check but it involves 200 (?) admits who are offered the scholarship --it's explained on the website and in the viewbook.
By Legolas (Legolas) on Friday, April 02, 2004 - 05:48 pm: Edit
alumni memorial scholars are the top 200 applicants.. they get a few privileges and stuff. but I got rejected from almost every college I applied to, so I'm not too happy about it. The financial aid is out of my reach (maybe not with some loans).. so I probably won't attend.
Is the college really paying for the April Days visit? Anyone talked to them about it?
By Culovv (Culovv) on Sunday, April 04, 2004 - 05:36 am: Edit
Im gonna call on monday about the visit since im most likely going to go during my spring break. Anyone else planning on going? Colgate looks great but the preppy atmosphere that ive heard about isnt exactly what i was hoping for. Anyway, Im going to check it out for myself.
By Creamer515 (Creamer515) on Monday, April 05, 2004 - 03:01 am: Edit
I'm planning on visiting Colgate but I don't really feel like missing school to go to those April visit days. Rather, I think I'm going during a weekend... still have to call the office to double check though.
By Lalai26 (Lalai26) on Monday, April 05, 2004 - 07:22 pm: Edit
I'm definitely going on the 13th and 14th. Maybe all us CCers should set up a connection.
By Dadofgirl (Dadofgirl) on Tuesday, April 06, 2004 - 06:31 pm: Edit
Are people bringing their parents to the visiting days or are the students going by themselves?
By Collegeparent (Collegeparent) on Wednesday, April 07, 2004 - 09:34 am: Edit
Parents are more than welcome at them; special events are set up for parents to talk with the administration and to attend classes, etc. Most definitely, parents should go - but keep some distance so that the kids can mingle and make up their own minds.
By Culovv (Culovv) on Wednesday, April 07, 2004 - 10:29 am: Edit
Im going alone.
