How is Oberlin?

By Dadster on Saturday, April 13, 2002 - 08:57 am: Edit

Oberlin is well regarded, particularly for Music. It has a reputation for being very liberal politically.

I thought Oberlin was great for English Literature!

How popular is foreign study at Oberlin?

By Dadster on Friday, September 27, 2002 - 08:39 pm: Edit

Check the Oberlin Office of Study Away.

Is Oberlin's English dep't really all that good? I sat in on a Joyce and Yeats class there, and it was horrible. I wanted to cry. I really loved the rest of Oberlin, though, and if anyone could give me any information on its English classes, I would be most appreciative.

I found this site on another board. Can someone who's actually been to Oberlin or who knows more about it report on its content? The article seems outrageous and extremely biased.

"The article seems outrageous and extremely biased."

I think you pretty much summarized it.

Did anyone apply Oberlin Early Decision? Results/stats?

By Wheatthin (Wheatthin) on Thursday, January 15, 2004 - 02:44 pm: Edit

I applied RD and am anxiously awaiting a decision in March or April!

I visited 6 colleges and my Oberlin visit was far and away the best. My "Why Oberlin" essay as about this visit. Where else could you listen to a live raggae band, be asked to play in a pickup ultimate frisbee game(tour guide was a player), tour a first class conservatory, witness a Braveheart reenactment and return to the womb in the Mudd Library in a single visit???

Unfortunately, Oberlin does not offer great merit aid and that may be a problem given the fact that I have been offered a lot of scholarships at the three other colleges I have been accepted to(RPI, Allegheny, Rutgers).

By Sharik (Sharik) on Thursday, January 15, 2004 - 06:55 pm: Edit

Hi, I posted earlier asking about Oberlin. I now attend the college and am in my second year. I'm extremely pleased with Oberlin and I find it the ideal environment in which to be a college student.

The article mentioned above is infamous on campus, but I don't know anyone who actually got worked up about it. It made me laugh out of disbelief. The person who wrote it obviously knows very little about the college and seems to show a lot of prejudice as a fanatic of the far right. I can't even begin to refute it: it's completely off the mark! I think that it is pretty clear, even to those who aren't students at Oberlin, that
the writer and his ignorant remarks are not to be taken seriously, so I won't waste anyone's time talking about it.
I do, however, welcome any other questions or concerns one might have.

The English department at Oberlin is, in fact, supposed to be very good. Most courses I'm sure one will find challenging and well taught. I'm considering a double major in English and Mathematics. I have not taken the course on Joyce and Yeats, so I can't talk much about it. Those who were taking it complained about how much work it involved. I really enjoyed the classes that I have taken though.

To Wheatthin: Hahaha, You were in one of those tours where all the Harkness kids did the Braveheart thing?! That's hilarious, I thought the tours who witnessed that, among several other things done for the benefit of visiting groups(such as the tour guide being kidnapped by ninjas, etc.) would give people second thoughts about joining. But you're right, where else can you do all of the things you stated in your essay? My freshman year, I was overwhelmed by the number of things going on and it really made me understand what was important about college. There are few other campuses as diverse, musical and receptive as this one and I was proud to be there from day one: Oberlin provided what was the quintessential college life to me. I hope you decide to join!

Cheers!

By Wheatthin (Wheatthin) on Sunday, January 18, 2004 - 12:57 am: Edit

Second thoughts? The zaniness of my visit cemented the deal!! Some of my other visits were "Buildings...blah...blah...blah...prestige...blah....blah....blah....academics...blah...blah....blah? I wanna be a part of a community that is alive and has values that resonate with my values. While I may be able to find a likeminded remnant at RPI, Case, Allegheny and Wooster, I know that the Oberlin community will offer a common ground for my politic and ethos

And no, we didn't get ambushed by ninjas!

Oberlin's an excellent college. Both of my parents went to Oberlin and I serious considered attending. I'd recommend Oberlin to any student looking for an intellectual environment in a beautiful, politically active campus.

By Spiffybrownboy (Spiffybrownboy) on Monday, January 26, 2004 - 06:10 pm: Edit

I love Oberlin. Even the admissions officers are awesome people. I was in their scholars program and got to stay on campus for a few days, and it was a wonderful experience. If I had not gotten into my ED, I would have definitely applied there (and very possibly have gone).

By Wheatthin (Wheatthin) on Thursday, March 25, 2004 - 03:12 pm: Edit

I was told by Admissions Office this pm that they were expecting the mail truck for the Admit letters to arrive in "about 15 minutes". I guess we can expect our letters in a few days.

By Alopex3 (Alopex3) on Thursday, March 25, 2004 - 05:52 pm: Edit

Thanks for the info Wheatthin and Mels, I'm pretty anxious too. Did they say anything about the rejection letters? >.<

By Mels (Mels) on Friday, March 26, 2004 - 03:00 pm: Edit

By Libroschico (Libroschico) on Friday, March 26, 2004 - 03:16 pm: Edit

I received my acceptance letter today. IMO, financial aid was lousy, though, so I probably can't attend.

I live about an hour and a half away; postmarked March 25.

By Alopex3 (Alopex3) on Friday, March 26, 2004 - 05:44 pm: Edit

Congrats on the acceptance anyways =) I live ~9 hours away, still keeping my fingers crossed.

Hi Sheri.....Congratulations on your acceptance!!
In fact, I went to Islamabad and Peshawar to volunteer last September. Can I ask you which part of Pakistan you come from?

By Leewong (Leewong) on Sunday, March 28, 2004 - 10:20 am: Edit

guys, thank you for your info. I'm also intl. I haven't received any email. Does it mean I'm rejected?

By Sheri (Sheri) on Sunday, March 28, 2004 - 01:57 pm: Edit

Mastaka ... Im from Karachi. Where else have u gotten in/applied? will i see u in ohio in august? Im waiting for Swarthmore but other then tht its Oberlin all the way!!

By Legolas (Legolas) on Sunday, March 28, 2004 - 02:05 pm: Edit

Congrats to all accepted..
wasn't the acceptance e-mail just great? I mean, they included lots of personal details from the essay and stuff. Anyone got the financial aid info in e-mail?

By Masataka (Masataka) on Sunday, March 28, 2004 - 11:38 pm: Edit

Hi Sheri....I applied to 8 LAC's. Swarthmore used to be the school of my dreams, but as I was enrolled in a Japanese university when I applied ED to Swarthmore, I was required to apply as a transfer, meaning that it's reasonable not to expect to get in considering the extremly low acceptance rate for transfers.....
I've been accepted to Oberlin, Carleton, Bates, Beloit and Grinnell so far. Right now, I think I will end up at Carleton. I'm planning on a college visit trip somewhere in April, and I think it will be the deciding factor.

By Wheatthin (Wheatthin) on Monday, March 29, 2004 - 02:56 pm: Edit

Libroschico, same here. The finaid offer was not anywhere what I needed to seriously consider Oberlin. Time to move on. I sent in my deposit to Rensselaer today. I am enrolling in their dual major cog sci/comp sci Minds and Machines program which seemed super kewl during my visit on RM day in September. Yes I am psyched now that all the suspense is over!!

By Jellyphish (Jellyphish) on Monday, March 29, 2004 - 04:45 pm: Edit

I got into Oberlin ED. Hopefully I'll be seeing some of you in the fall.

By Girlinbraids (Girlinbraids) on Monday, March 29, 2004 - 11:39 pm: Edit

I just got my acceptance letter for Oberlin today! It's really random because I was expecting a rejection (I had a bad interview) and thought Reed would accept me but I ended up on Reed's waitlist. Oh well. Unless I'm accepted to Yale or Brown, I'll definitely attend Oberlin. =) Is anyone else going to visit sometime in april?

By Rashmi (Rashmi) on Sunday, April 04, 2004 - 07:10 am: Edit

Yikes... I still haven't heard from Oberlin. No e-mail, no regular mail, nothing!!
It's getting scary now :(
But I live in India... and things take a while to reach here... so maybe I should still keep the faith...

By Girlinbraids (Girlinbraids) on Sunday, April 04, 2004 - 02:10 pm: Edit

Why don't you call the admissions office and ask them if you were admitted or not? They'll probably be able to tell you your decision over the phone.
I'm sure your letter is in the mail. Maybe it's taking so long to come because it's big. =)
Have you heard from other schools already?

By Legolas (Legolas) on Sunday, April 04, 2004 - 05:04 pm: Edit

Oberlin has been sending decisions by e-mail. I see no harm in sending an e-mail to the admissions office as well. I was accepted a few days back, and so was my friend from India. He often posts on this site though im not sure of his ID... the admissions decision by e-mail (in case you're accepted) contains a lot of stuff specific to one's application instead of a generic letter. I've seen your stats on the site Rashmi and I'm sure Oberlin would be happy to accept you.
