Hi all,
How many here made it into HMC?
Also, how would you rate Harvey Mudd for Engineering and Computer Science?
Thanks!

| By Proudtobemom (Proudtobemom) on Wednesday, April 02, 2003 - 04:23 pm: Edit |
Son got in. Notification came via postal mail on Saturday, March 29 (we're in rural area of Northern California). Financial aid package showed up on Monday (and it was more generous than we thought it would be).
Anyone going to the visiting days April 13-15?

Congratulations to your son, Proudtobemom. Is that where you son will go to?

L76: 'Still not sure. He's in the "checking them out seriously now" phase.

I got my notification by email. btw is financial aid so low for international applicants - because the person there said I was awarded 2/39k usd !!
That was a shocker - unless the person missed a zero or something

I got into HM! I'm so excited. They have been my first choice since sophomore year, until recently--Harvard now, methinks maybe. But I got waitlisted to Harvard today. I'm leaning towards HM. I was also accepted to Rice, Carnegie Mellon, and Vanderbilt. Rejected to Yale. And waiting on Princeton, if you care.

Sinbushar: At the college night meeting we attended for Harvey Mudd, the admissions director was asked about students who don't make it into Harvey Mudd on the first try. He responded that the college looks very favorably on those applicants who persist. I think HM is a school where it means a lot if the student pursues admission in various ways--campus visit(s), e-mail contact, meetings, etc. They seem to be looking for students who really *want* to go to Harvey Muddd.
Perhaps that might be a route for you? Good luck!
P.S. An offshoot of this: Our son is receiving a Scouting scholarship on Saturday and the man who is in charge of the scholarship program asked our son which college's he'd been accepted at. "Oh, Harvey Mudd College," he said at Son's response. "My wife's godfather was Harvey Mudd; her father was good friends with the family."
Wow! I knew, of course, there was a real Harvey Mudd, but I never really attached it to a person.

I was accepted and got the Nova Scholarship (half tuition). Unfortunately, the school still costs 25k after the scholarship and doesn't accept outside aid for those without financial need, so I most likely won't go there.

I was accepted to HMC too. My first choice, so going for sure. Going on the 13-15th visit too. To answer the initial post, I would rank HMC in the top 5 nationally for engineering. CS, thinking maybe top 10. Best thing going for the program is the undergrad teaching emphasis and research integration. Other great part is liberal arts focus, one thing that turned off Rose-Hulman and CalPoly to me. This place just seems to have it all in my view...

It (Mudd)has it all, and it costs big. If you receive NO monies, the bill will do in your family budget for years. My daughter received money from EVERY school that accepted her, except Harvey Mudd. That is where she wanted to go most, but she instead opted for the school offering a generous $. I foolishly thought that if they really wanted her, they'd bargain. But I think they consider $39,900 a year to be a fair price. My daughter is wistful, but I guess that's reality. And she knows she is lucky to have all the other opportunities for good schools. But Mudd markets itself well, and we all feel disappointed.

I've heard Harvey Mudd is almost impossible to get into, and they reject plenty of 1500's. Does anyone know roughly what you do need to be admitted?

1480 SAT I (760M, 720V)
720 Hist, 800 Math IIC, 740 Writing
4.05 GPA weighted ~ 3.9 unweighted
4 years (inc this year) varsity swimming (swimming since age 7)
4 years of band
involvement in tutor club (secretary this year)
AP history and calc last year, 4 and 5 on the tests, respectively
this year, taking AP stats, gov, and chem, general physics (+band and regular english)
2 years of foreign language in high school
AMC 10, 12, AIME school winner

lol.. i had to go back and look at my app to write all that. thats pretty much the 2nd part of it, in its entirety.
i also visited 3 times, did an interview and an overnight, which probably helped. i also happen to think my essays were pretty good, but i guess its a matter of discretion
