QUESTION: I know this is a little last minute (the deadline is January 15th) and I'm afraid it's too late for me to schedule an interview. Here are my stats: Do you think there's any shot for me to get into Wellesley?
I have a 4.0 (unweighted) GPA and a 4.677 weighted GPA. My school doesn't offer many AP's, but I've had AP Statistics my Jr Year (i got a 5 on the exam), and this year I'm in AP English, AP Calculus, and AP Government. I've taken all the classes my school has to offer as far as Honors and upper-level courses.
On my SAT I I got a 1350 (700 M, 650 Verbal). My SAT IIs I have 730 writing, 700 math, and a 620 literature.
As far as EC's, I've lettered in 3 varsity sports. I did Swimming (and regionals and stuff) 10th and 11th grade, XC 10th, and track 9th.
I'm President of the National Honor Society, Vice President of French Club, and have been Class Secretary 9th, 10th, 11th grade, and now (12th) I am student body secretary. I am also Director/Producer of my school's Broadcast Journalism/Film program. I've volunteered with KIDS VOTING for 4 years and this year I was my school's Precinct Captain.
I've volunteered at my church in Nursery for four years, and i've also volunteered a little with Habitat for Humanity. This past summer I spent 3.5 weeks in canada as a volunteer for a Christian camp (owned by Younglife) I've also volunteered in georgia with the organization, totalling over 300 hours.
I've earned the Excellency in French Award as well as three years as an NCHSAA scholar athlete (just a little award you get for having a certain GPA and being on a varsity team)
I work at the local YMCA and have since last May (about 8 months). This summer I also worked 30+ hours a week at a local pool lifeguarding. I've also had a job as an ice cream girl (just summer job).
Let me know what yall think!!! thanks so much I appreciate it

I like everything about your profile except your SAT I scores, which are about right at Wellesley's average and your SAT II scores, which seem a little light...and my paranoia about admissions makes me much happier with scores significantly above average. Wellesley accepts a little under 50 percent...I'd expect this year to drop a point or three from last year's 47 percent. Overall I'd guess you have a better than average shot but by no means a slam dunk.
Where else are you applying?

Thedad,
thanks for your response
!
I think I need more safeties in the schools I'm applying to. My #1 is Wellesley or UCLA. I need to visit both before I decide
1. UCLA - I'm out of state so this one is very much a longshot and probably won't happen...
2. Vanderbilt - it's iffy and my parents aren't happy with the price
3. University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill- I'm in state here and I got a "likely letter" so I'm counting on this as my actual safety
4. North Carolina State University - I was accepted here (it's rolling admission) and it's my backup backup school... it's sort of math and science related which is not exactly what I'm into..

Hey Gcl24,
You sound very qualified for Wellesley. I was accepted Early Decision... my SAT's weren't as good as yours but my weighted GPA was significantly higher (is your 4.3 weighted or unweighted?). My class rank was about the same, and I think our EC's/awards sound comparable. All the top colleges are a crapshoot, but you definitely sound like you have a great shot
. Best of luck with Wellesley, and let me know what happens. Maybe we can talk if you decide to go there!

Caliel130,
Hey. I think that you sound qualified for Wellesley, but as everyone knows, Wellesley is a crap shoot. Your SAT scores are right around their average, which is good. You have a solid GPA and your class rank is great (though I don't know if that's a huge deal to Wellesley). If you have lots of EC's, then that's great. Everything sounds good. I was accepted ED with lower SAT scores than you but a higher weighted GPA... so maybe that will balance out. Anyways, best of luck with everything, and let me know if you're accepted - it's always fun to "meet" new classmates
!

not sure about GPA AP etc..

Well so far you lok very good. But Singaporean per se isn't any special hook. Wellesley, like a lot of other top colleges, has their pick of internationals...it's not as if you're doing them a favor by applying, which it might be at some other schools.
| By Wellsbluu (Wellsbluu) on Thursday, March 18, 2004 - 07:12 pm: Edit |
Landy,
If your grades reflect the excellence of your scores, your chances are above 80% I'd say, based on previous years' stats. So....very good.
International status is most certainly a hook--our intl population is about 9%, and its a major priority to keep it strong. All things being equal, they are definitely admitted at a higher rate.

hi everyone,i was wondering if any of you knew anything about the waitlist at wellesley? Also, if i'm from north dakota, would i have more of a chance over someone from say massachusettes? or dont they put any weight on where a person is from once they are on the wait list. Lastly, from all of you who were accepted earlier, would you say the general group of people who were accepted to wellesley will end up going there? Or would they pick an ivy league school over wellesley.
Thanks
M

Hey! I just finished my junior year and I'm trying to figure out where to apply to college this fall. What do you think my chances are here? Any other college recommendations? Thanks!
Entering senior at a top 10 public high school in California
GPA: 3.55 UW/ 3.67 W (upward trend)
SATII Writing: 800
SATII Literature: 690
I'm taking the SATI in October after I do test prep this summer
By the end of senior year, I will have taken 8 APs and 1 honors class (AP Music Theory, AP Psych, AP Euro, AP US History, Hon. English, AP English, AP Gov/Econ, AP Stat, AP Calc AB)
-Member of Junior Statesmen of America
-Mock Trial- 2 years
-Vice President of Philosophy Club
-Staff writer on school newspaper
-Member of Amnesty International- 3 yrs
-Member of History Club
-Member of the school district's Diversity Committee, which works to combat such issues as homophobia in the school environment
-I'm starting a book club and a Democratic club next year, both of which I'll obviously be president of
-Member/Volunteer at Feminist Majority Foundation
-Volunteer/Organizer for John Kerry for President/ Kerry Campaign Writers Bureau/ Students for Kerry (about 15 hours a week)
-Participated in National Youth Leadership Forum for Law in Washington DC this spring
-Won the underclassman award at my school 2 years in a row, once for English, once for Precalculus (each teacher picks one student from years frosh-junior to give an award to for academic excellence)
- I'm in the Gifted and Talented Education Program (GATE) at my school
-Took classes at UC Berkeley every summer I've been in high school (got straight A's in them)
-Taking classes at local community college as well
-During budget cuts, I led a letter-writing campaign among the students to protect the teachers and programs that had been put in jeopardy
-Wrote a novel (unpublished) and 2 plays, one of which was performed at UC Berkeley
-I don't know if this will factor in at all in assessing my grades, but my mom has been unemployed for a year, on top of which there was a death in the family, the combination of which made for a stressful junior year to say the least. :-( However, my grades have definitely rebounded, and this semester, I have a weighted 4.0
-I'm a very strong writer and will be able to get good recommendations.
If someone could let me know what you think my chances are, that would be great!!
