Discus: Individual Schools: Top Liberal Arts Colleges (LACs): Bowdoin College: Class of 2008
By Renobi888 (Renobi888) on Wednesday, January 28, 2004 - 11:59 am: Edit

uh hmm...this is the Bowdoin board, right? Yay!! Anyhow, since i'm a prospective class of '08 kind of dude, i'm posting here as well as under the "bowdoin" heading...
Anyways, i'm a senior in HS and have sent in my app for Bowdoin RD. I visited the place in November for 4 days and got to chill with the faculty, students, and experience the great white cold. Seriously, it was as cold in Nov in Maine as it is now in NJ,...but i loved the place, (great food, accesbile profs, nice facilities, impressive living facilities, cheap shopping in Freeport...the list goes on and on and on) like you know...kind of just felt "right" on campus. So anyways here are my stats...feel free to comment.
1370 SAT I
690 Verbal
680 Math
800 US SAT II
800 World SAT II
680 Writing SAT II
rank 1/69 (public school)
applied for the Chamberlain leadership Scholarship
EC's-lots of wierd interesting stuff..but i should go back to studying for midterms.....Go Polar Bears '08!!!

Got Accepted today! :) NOt sure if Im going to go. My financial aid package was awesome, but I still have had better offers from better schools. In your case, I think you have great stats, youre definitely in the range in terms of everything, this meaning that your numbers wont pose a distraction. SO, I think you might get in with a good application. My stats follow

SAT 1410 (750 v)
SAT 2 800 wr 800 sp read 650 2c
gpa 4.05/4.45 (not great)
taken 13 aps
ap shcolar with distinction
president of 3 clubs, captain of 3 activities, editor in chief of a spanish newspaper, and the EC list goes on
essays were good, had a professional revise them for me (for free :D)
So, thats what I had that got me in, oh, rank about 9/600 some odd

i am international student. i applied to several schools, and my only wish is to see just one offering me acceptance; i also applied to bowdoin regular; so would you please tell how do you know that you got in as far as march 16, weren't they suppose to send confirmations early april for regular; or were just ED II? did they send it by e-mail or regular mail? are you as lucky as being regular and knowing that you got in by march 16?
please answer.

Some colleges are notifying a number of applicants a few weeks early. Why they do this isn't explicitly stated but it may have to do with an attempt, in the cases of the specific students, to influence them to think more favorably about that school when it comes time to decide which offer, if there are more than one, to take.

Swarthmore did the same thing at the same time as Bowdoin and, from reading the threads, March 15 looks like it is now becoming a semi-official "Early RD" date for many colleges. Swarthmore asked recipients of the early notification to take into consideration the feelings of other applicants who were going to have to wait until April 1 to learn of their decision. That hasn't done much to prevent the recipients from immediately boasting at school (in the case of the one girl on Monday at my Ds high school who got such letter from Swarthmore) or here on CC (see Swarthmore thread or above post) so the word is out.

o.k. thanks 2dsdad.could you, or some one else who is familiar with bowdoin- i mean those that got this sort of " early RD"- tell me if they are/were notified by e-mail or by regular mail.if it was by e-mail, was it for all a common 15 date?
do they have this habit of telling people by e-mail that they got in, being ED, or RD? if so, only those that were accepted receive e-mail?
thanks

uh yea...i've been admitted..woohoo!! now it's decision time between Bowdoin and three other schools i'm into...whilst i wait for Williams and Upenn's letters

Collinterested - my daughter did not hear early from any schools that she is applying to RD. I don't know if there is a set date but several schools, judging by what is posted here, sent out letters around March 15. I read some posters from overseas say that they got their letter FedEx and I think someone else said they got a phone call. That is as much as I know. My daughter, like you, is waiting for a letter from Bowdoin and elsewhere on or after April 1.

Hey, renobi and superdude, let me know if you end up at Bowdoin - i'm going there next year. Also, where are you guys deciding among? I have friends at Middlebury, Williams, Yale, Dartmouth, BC, and my sister goes to Columbia so if you're considering any of those, I may be able to help.

Is the class of 2008 going to be bigger?

I know that Bowdoin is a school of somewhere around 1650 students, with about 400-425 students in each class. However, I just noticed my acceptance letter said they were slecting a class of 475 students. Is Bowdoin increasing its enrollment, or am i reading into this wrong? My worries about it being too small (smaller than my HS) are about all thats keeping me from sending in my deposit now, so I think a class of even 50 more students would be better. Does anyone know about this?

hey, kj, i'm a first-year now at bowdoin, and our class has about 475 in it. we're the largest class here, and they sometimes have a bit of trouble with accomodations, but that's definitely the class size that they're aiming for next year's class as well.

good luck to everyone with decisions, and hopefully i'll see some of you next year.

Hey all-

I just recently decided on Bowdoin - I went to an open house a few days ago and was very impressed. Any one who wants to chat can IM me:

Also, the prospective student chats for Bowdoin are great - there's one this Tues at 9 PM ET, and its a great way to chat with lots of class of '08 members. :)

Hey everyone --- I just decided to enroll at Bowdoin next year. Does anyone know how to get to that chatroom that Jamielb mentioned above? ...cuz it sounds like an awesome idea. Is it the sorta thing where you just go on AIM and ask someone to invite you in?

By Smiley (Smiley) on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 08:34 pm: Edit

Travis, go to www.bowdoin.edu, then go to "admissions" at the top. Along the left side, you'll see a large icon that says "chat." If you go there between 9 and 11 tomorrow night, you'll find some admissions people, current students, and members of the class of '08. It's a Q&A thing and also just chatting. :-)

By Travisd (Travisd) on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 08:55 pm: Edit

Thank you!! Now I have something to look forward to tomorrow... other than writing my senior paper... which won't actually be written any time soon.
