I just came back from the Coast Guard Academy's Minority Introduction to Engineering/Boot Camp. The people there are really nice, but it only has 8 majors...should I still apply?

By Usna_Reject (Usna_Reject) on Saturday, December 27, 2003 - 11:45 pm: Edit

I'm applying to the Naval Academy and I was considering CGA but stopped for that reason. I wanted aeronautical engineering but they didn't have it. Well after all it's the coast gaurd not air guard, eh... If you like boats and engineering then apply. It's not really how many majors they have but if they have the one you want.

I was gonna apply to USCGA, but the recruiter never got back to me. I guess the Coast Guard lost out on that one (I'm doing NROTC).

Alphachimp--

did you already get accepted in NROTC? Which school do you plan on doing it at? I applied for NROTC in November, but haven't heard back yet...

If you're serious about it - this goes for any college - YOU have to keep calling/emailing the contact person(s). Colleges keep records of how many times you try to reach them - it shows how serious you are about the college/program. My brother goes to CGA and loves it - he went all over the place last summer - to a bunch of islands for training. I myself am hoping to hear from West Point. Hang in there if it's what you really want and keep calling them.

Hi Stillwaiting,
I have to ask about your statement:
"YOU have to keep calling/emailing the contact person(s). Colleges keep records of how many times you try to reach them...."
I didn't know this. How often do you call your contact person? Do you do it weekly, daily?

I applied to all of the academies. My suggestion is to call them or send them a letter or something at least every 2 weeks. It shows them you haven't lost your motivation to go.

I'm applying to Coast Guard and Navy... By send a letter or call every two weeks, what do you mean? What did you say?

By Frescoelmo (Frescoelmo) on Sunday, May 16, 2004 - 05:46 pm: Edit

hey, i really want to go to the coast guard, im into civil engineering and i feel that it would be great for me. how hard is it to get in and what is it like there?

By Cadet7613 (Cadet7613) on Monday, May 17, 2004 - 04:15 pm: Edit

It's selective but not as competitive as Annapolis or West Point.

By Frescoelmo (Frescoelmo) on Monday, May 17, 2004 - 11:09 pm: Edit

yah thats what i've heard... i like small schools with a big bang, and at the coast guard its just like that.

Is anyone going to the AIM program at CGA?

By Geoff (Geoff) on Tuesday, June 15, 2004 - 04:59 pm: Edit

For frescoelmo: do it. My dad had the same feelings and came out of it feeling it was the best education hes had-he's attended MIT if you want it to compare to civilian schools. He's also been offered multimillion dollar jobs with companies when he decides to leave. For Scritsailor: I applied and was chosen number 5 out of 10 by the auxiliary to go. However, the CGA or someone hosed it up and I was not able to attend. If you choose to pursue it, and are selcted, you will pretty much be gauranteed acceptance. Good luck to both of you. Semper paratus

As a follow up. I was just informed my LtCmmdr Knowles that I will be attending the third session and representing the fine state of CA. I was sent the wrong letter... Wow, that is quite a feeling!

By Scitsailor (Scitsailor) on Saturday, June 19, 2004 - 09:48 pm: Edit

yeah i'm going to session 2. they told you what number they chose you? thats weird.... I'll be representing MA. Good luck!

By Geoff (Geoff) on Monday, June 21, 2004 - 07:37 pm: Edit

well, my dad is friends with the auxilary guy who interviewed me and the only reason he was told was because the interviewer was confused on why I didn't get in. MA, huh? Go Sox!

By Scitsailor (Scitsailor) on Wednesday, June 23, 2004 - 12:09 am: Edit
