My daughter was just deferred from Wash U in St Louis on their 2nd ED. She has a GPA of 3.8, Sats of 660 v and 700 m. She's in an IB program on Long Island. A classmate of hers witha slightly lower GPA and slightly higher SAT got in in ED 1 and geographic balancing may have something to do with the deferral.
What should she/I do now? Is deferral a nice way to saying no or does she still have a chance? How can she increase her chances?
She also applied to Tufts, Emory, Vanderbilt, Tulane, American, UNC chapel hill and SUNY Binghampton. Any thoiugths on her chances?
Thanks
Scott

Her chances are still very good. She should continue pursuing her interests/major and keep WUSTL up to date with that info.

I can't imagine she won't get into Tulane, American and SUNY Binghampton. She also has a shot at Emory and Vanderbilt, but they could go either way. Tufts and UNC Chapel Hill are real reaches. Good luck.

My daughter was accepted ED1 with almost identical scores and GPA. I suggest that your daughter do an overnight visit as soon as possible. (Arrange through admissions). That way, they'll see she's committed to attending; even more than just as an ED candidate. Plus, it gives additional opportunities to see and be seen. (The students she stays with also write an evaluation) If she hasn't interviewed with admissions, she should do so then.
Good luck.
By the way, Tulane will probably offer your daughter scholarship money. Mine just turned down money to go to Wash U.

She visited already and interviewed. Are you suggesting a second visit? Kind of expensive to show interest.
I think she might have gotten in if a kid from her high school hadn't gotten in ED 1 (her best friend ). They like to geographically balance the school and may be unwilling to take too many kids from the same area (especially early decision)> I'm hopeful that when they look at the broader pool maybe she'll squeak in but many messages on these boards make me pessimistic
