I'm a white male from NY at a pretty competitive HS

SAT: 1490 (Math 780 Verbal 710)

SAT II: Writing 800
U.S. History 750
Math IIC 750

9 AP's taken by graduation (Stat 5 U.S. History 4 Spanish 3)

Ranked: 22/350 (Top 7 %)

I got deferred from Duke Early Decision and I'm thinking about applying ED II to Wash U, but I was wondering if I applied RD if I would still have a chance.

If you have extracurricular activities and leadership positions, are a good writer, and are getting good recs, I'd say that you have a very very very good shot at admission. Good Luck = )

My brother got into Duke from Early Decision, and he has about same stats you have.
My brother worked very hard for his essays and abt activities. I think you should impress Duke admission officers with your letters or interviews.
Good Luck~

I hate to say this, but nowadays getting deferred is not a great sign. You already handed in your application, wrote your essays, and stated to Duke that they were your first choice, and they did not take you. Unless you get a major award or anything dramatic happens, Duke will view your application in the same way. Even worse, the regular decision applicant pool at all of the elite schools is very formidable, especially at Duke.

If your heart is still set on Duke, I would write them a letter telling them that you are still very interested, etc. However, stop there. I would not inundate with all this other information, unless of course, it is really significant. You don't want to seem desperate.

Keep in mind, if you apply ED II to Wash U, and you get accepted, you have to go. You can no longer wait on and hope for Duke. If your not that high on Wash U, I discourage doing this.

One more thing to consider. Applying ED II to Wash U increases your chances of admission compared to applying regular. Applying regular is considerably harder because Wash U gets over 20,000 applications total, most of them for regular decision. A lot of people get inundated with mail from Wash U and thus decide to apply. I'd say if you demonstrate a sincere interest in Wash U, you'd have a good shot at admission. Wash U wants the best students that are enthusiastic about the school, not simply the best students.

Good luck in the college process.
