My S2 is considering this school, among others. Anybody have experiences, rumors, information, complaints, or anything about this small school on Virginia's Penninsula.

Thanks,
RB

I have no personal experience with the school, but during one of our earlier conferences with D's guidance counselor, he mentioned that he had visited Christopher Newport U and was very impressed. Apparently it is a young school whose reputation is on the rise, and should be watched in the future. I haven't read much about it in the college review publications other than "Harvard Schmarvard" by Jay Matthews -was reviewed as "up and coming small state university with a caring faculty". Hope this helps.

I live in Newport News, the city where CNU is located. A few people I know go to the school, it is ok. It has risen in rank a little in the past few years, though some people see this as it getting a little ahead of itself. I hear the academics are pretty good, and I hear great things about the faculty, but..

...the truth is, this city, Newport News, is a crap hole. I can't think of any classmates I have that actually want to stay here for another 4 years. This place is the armpit of the world, there is absolutely nothing of culturally redeeming value. Our most important monument is a multiplex in nearby Hampton. So just a warning... if you are looking for good Virginia schools I would check out JMU.

JMU is a giant party school. I have numerous friend who go there and their grades are flailing horribly. And these were A students in high school. I have been accepted to CNU and I plan on attending...Aren't there any other nearby cities that provide more entertainment for college students???

There's Norfolk and Virginia Beach, which both have a lot to do for college kids, but they're both like over an hour away from Newport News. Newport News and Hampton suck.
