Does anyone have any info on Connecticut College?

By Marinakitchen (Marinakitchen) on Thursday, January 15, 2004 - 02:10 am: Edit

Hey! Let's get an active thread going on Connecticut College, shall we?

Who is applying? What are your stats like? I'm applying from California - I think I would probably be the average applicant there.

Is it true that CC is pretty WASPy? What are their art and english programs like? I've heard the campus is gorgeous.

Please share your thoughts. : )
And maybe we can bring Connecticut College back to the boards

Well, my daughter has applied to Connecticut, and we visited over the summer, so if you have any questions I'd be happy to help.

It is used as a safety by Ivy applicants, but I can't say it seemed oppresively waspish, although you definitely couldn't call it diverse. This lack of diversity is something the school is attempting to address. You're right in saying the campus is lovely, which is just as well as it feels very isolated from the immediate area. I think that's a function of its previous status as a "ladies" college. New London is fairly blue collar, although it has the usual mix of coffee houses, art galleries etc. I don't think there's much mixing between town and gown. CC has some great study abroad programs (with grants to match).

As for stats, my DD is reasonably competitive I think (1440, ACT 33), but as she's interested in music, I'm not sure how well she fits in. To be honest, she fell in love with the environment, rather than anything else. The dorms we saw were enormous, and after freshman year most students are in singles. Apart from getting accepted, the biggest hurdle for us will be the fees: if there's no merit aid available I don't think we'll be able to do it, but we'll just have to see.

How do you think their english and art programs are? Also, if anyone else applied, how long was your "why connecticut college" essay? I wasn't sure about the length

I just visited Connecticut College on Tuesday and I have to say my visit was the not that impressive. The campus seemed somewhat monochromatic because all the buildings are grey and so is the ground. However, there was a great view of the New London harbor. I would say that it is a WASPy campus, many of the students on campus as well as those visiting in my tour group seemed rich and snobby - many of them were from the New York City Area. The art building seemed nice - it was the most original looking from the outside. The dorm I saw looked somewhat old and worn out but there are many others that have been recently renavated. I still might apply here, but after my visit the college fell a lot farther down my list. HTH.

umm...has anyone heard? i really feel out of touch with this school...

By College_Kid (College_Kid) on Friday, March 26, 2004 - 11:04 pm: Edit

waitlisted (on Scholarship Waiting list) .. decision by e-mail.
But they say the reason for waitlisting was my financial need. stats:
excellent ECs and awards( by most standards)
1550+ SAT I, 2350+ SAT II
Top 20% of class
Interesting... i've been accepted to a higher ranked school with financial aid. oh, and I'm international.

By Red92 (Red92) on Saturday, March 27, 2004 - 12:13 am: Edit

what? i don't understand...they waitlisted you for a scholarship? Or did you get accepted and you're waiting for a scholarship....? I didn't know it was that great of a school....

By Jenniferpa (Jenniferpa) on Saturday, March 27, 2004 - 08:41 am: Edit

This is odd. Connecticut claims they don't have scholarships for merit, but perhaps you (college kid) are refering to some kind of grant money?

By College_Kid (College_Kid) on Saturday, March 27, 2004 - 11:24 am: Edit

well.. they meant grant aid.

i received a likely letter from connecticut college on friday. they invited me to visit the school through its multicultural weekend in mid april. in the letter they said i would be receiving an official letter of admittance soon. i have to admit that i did apply to connecticut college as a safety, but i thought i would not get in. i did a really poor job at writing my why connecticut essay and i did not show enough interest to visit the place before i applied.
i'm a chinese girl going to a private school in nyc.

College_Kid, where are you from?

By Red92 (Red92) on Sunday, March 28, 2004 - 12:48 pm: Edit

when are they sending out acceptance letters anyway? why does it seem so hard to get into?

By Legolas (Legolas) on Sunday, March 28, 2004 - 02:17 pm: Edit

Lots of people don't take such colleges seriously.. i.e. consider it a safety, so they get all selective about students who they don't think would attend.

By Collegekiddd (Collegekiddd) on Sunday, March 28, 2004 - 10:28 pm: Edit

I have been admitted with financial aid but since I am an international I don't have chance to visit. Want comments about the college badly. (wow. another international uses "CollegeKid something" as the username. interesting)

By Jenniferpa (Jenniferpa) on Monday, March 29, 2004 - 12:08 pm: Edit

Legolas is right: Connecticut has a reputation as being a back-up school for the Ivy bound. I and DD took a tour last year, and she did end up applying, but she hasn't heard yet. We both liked the campus a lot, but it is very separate from New London. It has a reputation for being full of trust-fund babies from Boston, but I can't say that I noticed that. You might try doing a search on the parents board: I know that someone else's child applied, and they posted a tour report.

oh cool. so if my stats are low i still have a good chance of getting in? ha.... :/

Got in here in MA, 1480, top 2% yada yada. Got barely any fin aid tho, apparently the early deadline didnt get my family any better of review, because they even want more than the the FAFSA EFC said. I thought the CSS Prfoile was supposed to help familys like mine. Oh well, better luck to everyone else.

By Caliel130 (Caliel130) on Thursday, April 01, 2004 - 03:16 pm: Edit

Hey Guys,
I got waitlisted here in MA, which is really funny 'cause I got into Colgate. I kind of considered Conn. a safety, or atleast a match!

By Soozievt (Soozievt) on Thursday, April 01, 2004 - 03:18 pm: Edit

There is a big envelope here from Conn College at my house too but my daughter is at tennis practice. It says "welcome' on the outside. I dunno the financial aid obviously cause no way would I open this.

By Call_Me_Ishmael (Call_Me_Ishmael) on Saturday, April 03, 2004 - 12:15 am: Edit

Yeah, Conn college is weird. it was the only "safty school" one of my friends applied to, and it was the only place that wait-listed her.

They remind me too much of my highschool . . . their seal even looks almost exactly like ours.

Hey Everyone! My name is Sally, I live in Weston Mass. just outside of Boston. I fell across this message board while just looking around, so I thought I'd add something! I got into Conn. back in december after applying early decision, cause I knew automatically it was a great place for me. Gorgeous campus, great opportunities to study abroad, strong academically, and tons of clubs and orgs.I don't consider myself a trust-fund baby, and neither are the kids from my school that are going with me. The two girls that are there now as freshman that went to my high school last year are both very invovled in the theatre and music departments and say they are both wonderful. I went down to the open house this past monday, and was so surprised at how friendly and cheerful everyone was, even the upperclassman. I guess everyone sees things a little bit differently, but I felt like Conn. was much more open-minded than the books like to say it is. My email is benne28@yahoo.com and my screen name is chicasweet2 if any other accepted students want to chat! :-)

Conn advertises itself as having small classes but in 4 years I had none under 20. They are dropping departments, and eliminating courses. Conn is in financial trouble and it shows. All courses I have are in 2 1/2 hour blocks instead of meeting 3 times a week.

honora, what is your major and what year are you graduating? I'm really curious to hear your views on Conn becuz I will be a freahmen there this fall.
