What are the opinions on this university?

By Sunnycagrl15 (Sunnycagrl15) on Thursday, December 04, 2003 - 07:07 pm: Edit

I've never been there, i'm planning on visiting if i get in....

I applied early admission with a 3.3 UW/3.5 weighted and a 1330 SAT....what do you all think of my chances?

By Alex00087 (Alex00087) on Thursday, December 04, 2003 - 07:52 pm: Edit

I think you have a decent shot. The average GPA there is around a 3.5 and your SATs are superb. If for some reason you don't get in with Early Admission, you can always re-apply for regular admission, and im sure you will definately get in with regular.

BTW I applyed early with a 3.5 uw/3.62 w with a 1200 SATs so were kinda similar.

Good luck. Let us know what happens.

By Sunnycagrl15 (Sunnycagrl15) on Thursday, December 04, 2003 - 08:15 pm: Edit

i definitely will.....do you know when we're supposed to find out? end of january right?

By Alex00087 (Alex00087) on Friday, December 05, 2003 - 01:48 am: Edit

Actually, Early Action candidates should know before Christmas. I already got an Early Action acceptance letter from Univ. of San Francisco so they can come early.

By Sailorgirl1985 (Sailorgirl1985) on Sunday, December 07, 2003 - 04:12 pm: Edit

I applied early action too, 4.0 uw gpa 3/622 w 1st uw, 1480 sat's (79m/69v) I really hope to hear quickly so i don't have to apply to my state school as a safety. The admissions officer who came to our school said before Christmas but I was hoping I would hear before then...

Northern California

By Sunnycagrl15 (Sunnycagrl15) on Tuesday, December 09, 2003 - 10:37 pm: Edit

northern california.......hey i was thinking today.....i didnt realize this before cuz i applied to so many schools, but i never received anything from santa clara saying that they received my application, or any acknowledgement from them whatsoever. I have a friend at school who said she didnt receive anything from them either. Did anyone here receive anything?

By Sunnycagrl15 (Sunnycagrl15) on Wednesday, December 10, 2003 - 06:22 pm: Edit

wow....i just recieved this big packet from santa clara university in the mail and i thought OH MY GOD its my admissions decision!! so i tear it open and theres a brochure and a viewbook........and thats it. and im like uhhhhh.....so i called the undergraduate admissions office just to make sure and the lady said they sent those to all the early applicants, and that admissions decisions will be mailed out on or around the 19th of this month, which is a Friday, so those of us who live close will prolly find out on or around monday the 21st...man, way to ruin christmas for those who dont get in lol.

By Alex00087 (Alex00087) on Wednesday, December 10, 2003 - 08:19 pm: Edit

Wow the 19th...so far away...haha. Wow funny story, yeah they sent me about 5 of those brochures, Im not sure why though. Perhaps I was on multiple mailing lists. Well godspeed.

By Sailorgirl1985 (Sailorgirl1985) on Thursday, December 11, 2003 - 12:23 am: Edit

Does anyone know if you can call to find out your decision, on the 19th?

nope, i have no idea......does anyone know if theres a way to find out online?? i havent been able to find one yet.

man i want to know my results now, i applied EA,
stats are: 3.6 GPA unweighed, 3.75 GPA, 1290 SAT, and i will probably get my results on either the 19th or 20th since i live pretty close to the campus. Does anyone know how much recs, essays and ecs count?

By Balkanman21 (Balkanman21) on Monday, December 22, 2003 - 03:02 am: Edit

I’m in. SCU was a safety, but it is good to know I’m going to college. LoL, we’ll see what happens. Maybe I’ll end up going to Santa Clara. I live like 15 mins away and the campus is nice.

By Sunnycagrl15 (Sunnycagrl15) on Monday, December 22, 2003 - 01:03 pm: Edit

congratulations! lol i live like 15 mins away too, but ive never actually been to the campus, so i need to do that...i was looking at the dorms on their website though....maybe its just the pictures on the website but they looked realllly tiny, not carpeted, etc...have u seen them? are they as bad as they look?

By Balkanman21 (Balkanman21) on Monday, December 22, 2003 - 02:51 pm: Edit

You live 15 mins away and you’ve never seen the campus!?!? Well, like I said, the campus is really nice, but the two “residence halls” I saw were not so nice. Actually, one was solid, but the other was just gross. I also didn’t like the library, but they have this really cool student center and most of their facilities are either new or in really good condition. By the way, I live in Los Gatos. How about you?

By Alex00087 (Alex00087) on Monday, December 22, 2003 - 07:17 pm: Edit

Yeah the dorms remind me of hospital rooms, seriously with the white linoleum tile floors.. they look so sterile and weird. I dunno.

But if you live 15 minutes away, then why do you want to live on campus?

By Balkanman21 (Balkanman21) on Monday, December 22, 2003 - 07:20 pm: Edit

I think all first year students must live on campus, but I’m not sure. Either way, if I do end up going to Santa Clara, I will live on campus. I’ll go home often, but I’ll still have a dorm.

By Alex00087 (Alex00087) on Monday, December 22, 2003 - 07:29 pm: Edit

Well Im pretty sure first year students are not required to live on campus, and I also live 22 minutes away so I would want to save the $8500+ and live at home.

I dont WANT to live at home, but if its going to save money.

By Balkanman21 (Balkanman21) on Monday, December 22, 2003 - 07:38 pm: Edit

Wow, 22 mintues huh? I might live 22 minutes away also, but I’m not sure…I did not use a stopwatch :P

By Sunnycagrl15 (Sunnycagrl15) on Monday, December 22, 2003 - 09:23 pm: Edit

haha, I dont want to live at home for a few reasons. I wanna live on campus to meet people, make friends, maybe join a sorority etc., not just commute to and from school all the time. and also my parents are really really strict and if i want to escape my 12:00 curfew and actually have some freedom, i gotta move away. and lastly, my parents are paying for everything so why not take the opportunity? :) anyways, i live in fremont....how far away is los gatos from fremont? and alex, where do u live?

By Sunnycagrl15 (Sunnycagrl15) on Monday, December 22, 2003 - 09:24 pm: Edit

btw alex did u find out if u got in?

By Lsmalibu (Lsmalibu) on Monday, December 22, 2003 - 09:54 pm: Edit

I wish I had gone to SCU as an undergrad, not that I didn't enjoy my undergrad experience. I just love the San Jose/Santa Clara area and I would have been a lot closer to my best friends at San Jose State. I've also recently learned that SCU has an excellent reputation for undergrad learning and is small enough that I wouldn't have gotten lost like I did at UCD.

By Alex00087 (Alex00087) on Monday, December 22, 2003 - 10:39 pm: Edit

I still dont know if I got in because I havent been home.

The problem is, if my dad finds out that I was accepted, he would FORCE me to go to SCU and live at home and commute. I live in San Jose. I know it. He is way overprotective and doesnt want me to live on campus anywhere. That is why I have to hide my scu acceptance letter until I find out where else I get in and make a decision from there because if my dad thinks I didnt get into SCU, he just might let me move away to go somewhere else because yeah I do want to live on campus somewhere to meet new people and experiences.

By Balkanman21 (Balkanman21) on Monday, December 22, 2003 - 11:57 pm: Edit

Sunny,

Are you going to SCU for sure?

Alex, let us know when you find out

By Sunnycagrl15 (Sunnycagrl15) on Tuesday, December 23, 2003 - 01:39 am: Edit

nope...im waiting to find out about USD...if i get in there its about a 70% chance i'll decide to go there...i LOVE that school and my best friend is going to san diego state. i also applied at ucsb and i've been hearing really good things about it, though i havent seen it yet. so it just depends on where i get in and how many choices i have...also i STILL havent been to scu (pretty crazy huh? since i live in fremont), so i have to go down there and see it one of these days, and see how much i actually like it.

I just got my acceptance letter, I also got the Provost Scholarship which was a nice bonus. I was very happy since I now don't have to apply to the local state school. Santa Clara was my safety but it's still nice to know I have somewhere to go...

I'm finally home... and pleased to find a SCU packet awaiting me... and yay I got in too! My counselor told me it would be a reach if I applyed Early Action because supposedly they only take the best applicants for early action, but I proved her wrong!

Provost is a merit based 1/2 tuition scholarship, you have to keep a 3.0 gpa throughout college to keep the scholarship

By Cal (Cal) on Monday, December 29, 2003 - 01:17 pm: Edit

I got in Early Action with a 22 ACT, which is like an 1110 SAT and a 3.47 GPA. I visited the campus and it was really nice.

Well, a 3.6 and 1220 is exactly their average. If you have good EC's and write a good essay then yes, you should get in

ok so with my acceptance letter i got a whole letter about how freshman are not allowed to bring cars, and not to try and bring a car and park it on a side street...but my friend knows a freshman at SCU and she said that they just say that to scare you, and everyone she knows has a parking spot. so does anyone know the truth? cuz im getting a new car over the summer and i definitely dont want to leave it at home for a year. thanks :)

By Balkanman21 (Balkanman21) on Monday, January 12, 2004 - 12:49 am: Edit

Why do they want to scare the students they accept? You’d think that they’d want to attract those students and persuade them to come to SCU. Yeah it’s weird but I saw that in my acceptance packet too. I have some friends that go there and I’ll ask them if I get the chance. Either way, I’m sure you’ll make plenty of friends that do have cars though.

By Alex00087 (Alex00087) on Monday, January 12, 2004 - 02:06 am: Edit

Where did it say that? I dont remember seeing that in the letter.

By Sunnycagrl15 (Sunnycagrl15) on Tuesday, January 13, 2004 - 01:39 am: Edit

Sorry Mexor about the delay. My SATs were 1340 and my GPA unweighted was 3.99 and my weighted is 4.3. I also got a 28 on my ACTs. Hope that helps!

By Kelkel (Kelkel) on Sunday, January 25, 2004 - 11:13 pm: Edit

If you go to the Santa Clara website and then to undergraduate admissions, there is a link to the enrollment confirmation form, or if you call Santa Clara, I'm sure they will send you another. The weekend is for people who were admitted with distinction, but I'm not sure of the details, so if anyone knows please tell me. Thanks.

By Bern700 (Bern700) on Monday, January 26, 2004 - 01:18 am: Edit

WOW KelKel you were admitted with distinction good job! You must be really really smart. Did you get a scholarship or something??? I'm so jealous of you.

By Mztreus (Mztreus) on Monday, January 26, 2004 - 02:11 pm: Edit

Alex,
Congrats on the schools, but think twice before you consider UOP. I'm graduating from there this year and can tell you enough in 5 minutes to remove any thought of going there from your mind. UNLESS your Pharm or Intl' biz.

By Alex00087 (Alex00087) on Monday, January 26, 2004 - 06:51 pm: Edit

Thanks, Ive just been accepted there and im probably not going there unless they were to offer me some scholarships but theyre probably not.

mztreus i didnt apply at UOP but i know someone who goes there and im just curious........whats so bad about UOP? would u say santa clara is a lot better?

By Kelkel (Kelkel) on Monday, January 26, 2004 - 11:47 pm: Edit

Bern, I just got the dean's scholarship. You're new to this posting, are you thinking of going to SCU?

By Bern700 (Bern700) on Tuesday, January 27, 2004 - 01:16 am: Edit

No I'm going to the University of Pennsylvania but my girlfriend is going there next year and I thought I'd check out what people were saying about the school.

By Mztreus (Mztreus) on Tuesday, January 27, 2004 - 02:55 am: Edit

Sunnycagirl,
I think it depends on your major. The school of Intl' Biz, Grad school at the conservatory, and Pharm schools are great. There are no words to begin to describe the school of Ed. Most students would not notice the poor education their really getting unless they've attended elsewhere. It seems very much like high school.

I do think SCU is much better. I sat in on classes at the beginning of this past quarter and I have to say I was very impressed. Each teacher had students actively involved. More importantly, you could feel the positive environment within the classroom itself. Judging from the syllabi I read, the teachers have a developed vision of what they'd like their students to experience, but weren't so stifiling to control how. There's little more that I hate than doing fluff assignments and busy work; if it doesn't apply to the real world, don't waste my time. Know what I mean?

By Moonsurfer21 (Moonsurfer21) on Tuesday, January 27, 2004 - 06:51 pm: Edit

hey for all who care, my mom went here and absolutely loved it!! it's a great school and is definitly one of my top choices

By Kelkel (Kelkel) on Thursday, January 29, 2004 - 05:39 pm: Edit

Yeah I just got an e-mail from them saying they recieved my FAFSA and would send out a preliminary report on February 15th.

By Balkanman21 (Balkanman21) on Saturday, January 31, 2004 - 04:51 pm: Edit

Well I’m definitely not going to Santa Clara now that I got accepted to Tufts EDII (binding), but I still think SCU is a great school and the campus is gorgeous. I hope you guys end up attending. If Tufts doesn’t work for me, you might see me at Santa Clara pretty soon!

By Alimania (Alimania) on Tuesday, February 10, 2004 - 10:13 am: Edit

Hey all...

I'm a US citizen living abroad with about an 83% average and 1250 on the SAT I (670M, 580V). Do you think I have a decent shot at getting accepted?

By Alex00087 (Alex00087) on Friday, February 13, 2004 - 11:00 pm: Edit

Wow okay I just got my 'financial aid' report from Santa Clara and they are STINGY. They only offered me $2700 financial aid per year and no academic scholarships. The base tuition alone has been raised to $27,135. That price very close to Stanford's, and I think thats who they think they are. I guess im definately not attending SCU because wow I would be spending a fortune, when I already got a full paid scholarship somewhere else.

Best of luck to the rest of y'all. SCU really is a great school, if you can afford it. I just think they are way too overpriced and stingy with giving out money. If you can look past that you can get a quality education at Santa Clara U.

By Carolyn (Carolyn) on Monday, February 16, 2004 - 03:37 pm: Edit

Alex,
Wow, that IS stingy. The tuition at SCU is really a mind-blower: especially when you consider that they are probably competing with the lower-level UC's and cal states for students. Sorry it didn't work out for you, but hope you will be happy at one of your other choices.

Plan to major in dance with a double minor in English/psychology)

I know of a girl who turned down a Stanford scholarship to go to SC, but she also picked up an awesome scholarship at SC, for her I think it was mainly the sport, and she seems real happy with her decision, good luck, personally I would have gone to Stanford, more resources

I got in...

GPA 3.6 uw (rigorous schedule)
1250 SAT
three EC - but long term (longevity)
2 part-time jobs
was recruited for soccer..but money or chance to play regulary freshman yr. wasn't on cards

financial package was weak...sorry SCU
i'ma bounce to howard or goergetown instead...better financial packages there b/c more need-based than merit-based like SCU

Alright, it seems there are a lot of people headed towards SCU. I got in there on a Dean's Scholarship of 8,000 so it really looks good. However, I am coming from Ohio and don't really know a whole lot about the school. You see I am moving out to California in June so thats why i applied, but I also got accepted to a bunch in the Northeast. However I have narrowed my choices to either Santa Clara or Emory. If u guys could share anything on the positives and negatives to going to SCU that would be most helpful. I just cant decide! I know its a good school, but will it be fun? Whats the social life like, ect

Juding from the discussion would it be safe to say that a transfer student wouldn't have too much of a shot with merit or need based aid?

Should I use the Common Application or the application on Santa Clara's website? The only difference I can see is the essay selection.
