How difficult is it to get into Pepperdine? I have a 1250 SAT, 3.7 GPA, my class rank is 13/175, I have a lot of extracuriccular activities and leadership. I haven't taken any SAT 2's because I don't know which ones to take. Do I have a good chance of getting in?

Pepperdine is high on a cliff overlooking the ocean. I'm sure students manage to find their way down there, but don't really know. It's a beautiful campus. But you should know it's way out of the way. I would imagine, however, there's lots of transportation to other areas...i.e., LA...but you're definitely going to need transportation to get anywhere.

How much of a religious school is Pepperdine? Is it required to attend chappel every so often? My mom is Christian and my dad is Jewish so I've never had a specific affiliation and don't plan to. Will this count against me in admissions? Are there other kids at the school who aren't Christian?

I don't know about chapel requirements per se...you could start by checking out their website...but it's a pretty culturally conservative campus.

Wow sorry this is so late after everyone else finished talking about it. I just wanted to answer some questions. I don't even know if some of you guys are going to see this, but oh well.
I had a 1290 SAT, a 4.1 weighted gpa, and was 20/500 ranked in my class. I had good ECs and community service. I got into Berkeley and USC. I didnt get into Pepperdine. I think it's kind of funny that I got into one of the most prestigious schools in the country and didnt get into Pepperdine. fmhstud- my dad was curious if part of the reason I didnt get in was because I was Catholic. I'm not their demonomination and that might have harmed me, but I have no idea.

I doubt thats why. They have 10 percent catholic students...that's decent.
Personally I'm interested in Pepperdine too. Their campus is beauuuutiful. Very nice dorms also. If I can get in, thats proly one of my first choices. The problem is getting in. Seems kinda hard, and its weird seeing as how their SAT average is 1240...doesnt sound very difficult to get in..I guess they judge students on other things.

I think Pepperdine is looking for students who have been involved in their church, synagogue, etc. My daughter is interested in attending in Fall 2005. She is very involved in our church, e.g., active in youth group, organized Youth Sunday Services, plays piano for worship, in the Worship Band, went to Mexico to build houses during Spring Break for two years and plans to go again this year, helped with 3rd/4th grade youth group, in the Youth Musical, occasional layreader and greeter, nursery substitute during services, and teaches 3 year old Sunday School on an alternating basis. She will have excellent recommendation letters from both the Pastor and Youth Director--I've got to think this will help. She is a 15 yo senior who will be taking a gap year, has an unweighted 3.95, but hasn't taken the SAT I yet.
Even though Pepperdine is not categorized as a "Christian College" like BIOLA, Westmont or Point Loma, they are looking for that same type of commitment to one's beliefs. We've known A- students with good SAT scores (one had a 1480) who have been rejected while lesser students with good church ties have been accepted. The girl with the 1480 did not attend a church or have any type of commitment to spiritual activities. My older daughter, a USC sophomore, had a friend who scored a 32 on the ACT, but was also rejected by Pepperdine. She asked why she was rejected and was told it was because she had no church activities and that they are looking for the spiritual student. Turns out she was pretty happy at USC (graduated in June).
If you attend a church and aren't active, I'd start getting involved. If you don't attend a church, I wouldn't suggest running out and getting involved somewhere just to get into Pepperdine. However, if you think you might be interested in doing so--go for it. With required weekly convocations and some strict campus rules, I think Pepperdine is just looking for the type of student who will be a good fit.

I am just a hard core surfer who loves the beach. If any one goes here I would like to know about social life. Are there a healthy party scene? Strict Alco rules? Are the people snobs? Or if you know of ne beach schools that would suit me post away!

Hey a guy that went to Pepperdine was on True Life: I'm a Twin on MTV. But he transfered after a semester to Santa Barbara City College, to be with his twin. Lame, huh?

Answer to questions regarding Pepperdine ( it is pronounced Pepper-Dine)
It is right on the beach (after a class you can check out a sailboat or SCUBA gear). There is little is the way of a party scene around the school. The school is dry and beach housing is too expensive for students. There are parties in Calabasses and other places stufdents live (15-20 minutes away) The people are not snobs although many come from wealthy families. The facilities are awesome. I don't think it's necessary to have church activites but the spiritual essay question is very important. Hope this helps.

Is Pepperdine a good school overall?
By Comish (Comish) on Monday, March 22, 2004 - 02:51 pm: Edit
To Eliel, yes Pepperdine is a good school. It is always ranked in US News Best cooleges right around 50th in the nation. It has a fgood and developing relationship with So Cal business after building an on campus business center. Hope this helps.

I live in Arizona and Im accepted to Pepperdine. I am worried it is too small (3,000 kids) and too secluded. Other than that, its perfect for me. Does any one know if its suffocating to be hidden away in a malibu mt. like that?
By Comish (Comish) on Thursday, April 01, 2004 - 02:20 pm: Edit
To Callbound. Pepperdine is several hunderd yards form the beach and within a mile of a smail merchant center. Malibu is all around, Santa Monica about 20 minitue away. It is not remote it is just that Malibu isn't much of a college town.

To all of you that are considering Pepperdine, it is quite a bit harder to get into than it seems. I have a 1430 on my SAT's, 31 on ACT's, good recommendations and plenty of EC, including volunteering at a Christian youth camp for a month (Young Life). Yet, with all of this, I was put into the Spring 2005 semester instead of Fall 2004, which I had requested. There were 7000 applicants and only 700 were accepted. My dad's reasoning for my semi-rejection was because they look more for your connections to people in Malibu, more than merit. According to their averages, I should have been able to get in easily, but I didn't. I also am Catholic as uschicka was saying, but I sincerely doubt that that was part of the reason for their decision.
My suggestion is to apply for Early Decision. It's not binding, so you will be safe if that's not the only school you want to go to. One of my friends, with basically the same profile as myself, got in easily that way. Just don't make my mistake and think this school is a shoe-in.
(P.S.- All the other schools I have been accepted to are more prestigous than Pepperdine. I currently am deciding between UCLA or Vanderbilt. So I find this whole situation kinda funny.)

Snickerbarz,
I can't imagine that "connection to people in Malibu, more than merit" has anything to do with admission. My son has zero connections, has never set foot anywhere near California, but got in (excellent stats). I also disagree that it's easier to get in ED; my son's friend applied ED and was waitlisted (don't know what happened ultimately), whereas my son applied reg decision and was admitted and offered their top scholarship. Unfortunately that top schol is 20K which leaves us needing another 15K or more, so I think he's going to decline.
By Snickerbarz (Snickerbarz) on Sunday, April 11, 2004 - 10:06 pm: Edit
I didn't really mean that remark about the connections to be serious. My dad was being his cynically amusing self.
The ED idea is what seemed logical to me, being that my friend and I have almost the same stats. Congrats on your son's acceptance! Where is he thinking of going instead?
By Dolce (Dolce) on Tuesday, April 13, 2004 - 09:53 am: Edit
He will probably go to Baylor, which I think will be a good fit for him even though he *really* wanted Pepperdine or Wake Forest. Baylor has given him full tuition plus an extra 4K toward R/B.
