L.W. did you try their website? You might find some helpful reviews on www.epinions.com. I'm not a student at Northwestern but I live about 2 miles from it and I can tell you that is a great scool, and challenging at the same time. The campus and its students' comunity are very nice.

My brother and sister-in-law and several friends went to Northwestern. They liked it but it is very demanding academically. My brother was on the fencing team and flunked out. He did eventually graduate however and is a vice-president at a major bank. Everyone I know who has gone here has struggled academically, and they are all pretty smart. They went to graduate school and have good jobs now. I've been there, location seems good. It's pretty and on the lake. I can't believe no one has responded to this posting. Good luck.

I posted this on the other list, but it didn't get much response. I want to know what my chances are at Northwestern. Here are my stats:
Junior
Rank: top 20%
3.6 Un-weighted
3 APs this year (Eng, Spanish, Bio)
4 or 5 APs next year
I've taken extra summer courses every summer.
1270 SATs (probably 1350 by next September)
Planning on taking SAT II: Math IIc, Biology, Writing and Literature
Clubs:
NHS (possible officer position next year)
Red Cross Club (as an officer next year)
On the American Red Cross Executive Committee for my County.
Played JV soccer last year and will play again Senior year (had to skip this year)
School Newspaper
School Orchestra Award (for viola) two years in a row
Florida Music All-State Competition for 5 years
I know it is not a lot of information to go by, but I need suggestions so I know what to improve on. I would really like to go for music. Please respond!

northwestern only offers financial aid, no merit aid for musical ability. why would you want to go there rather than another school? Since chicago is cold, why not look at Eastman--connected to U of Rochester? Or another school offering merit money? A 1270 is not that big for NU, even tho it is good in my book---however, most musicians can get cut some slack so it should be passable for you. The audition's going to have to be great so practice. They take about 25% of the musicians who apply so it will boil down to whether they may need someone with your expertise rather than not being qualified.

Even tho it's a great school, I won't qualify for financial aid and I know I can win some money elsewhere. Besides, I hate the cold.

Thanks for the suggestion Music Toad. I am interested in Northwestern because they offer a special double degree program in Journalism and Music. I want to study both, so I figured this program would work for me. I will look into Eastman. I have been playing viola for 7 years, so I think my music chances are pretty good. I didn't know that thing about the financial aid...

Chances - you might also look into Vanderbilt. I know many V. students complete double majors and their Blair School of Music has a great string department - we attended a concert there last week. V. also has a good bit of merit aid available. Good luck to you - the world needs all the good violists available!

Eastman is as cold or colder than Chicago. It snows all the time and downtown Rochester is very depressed. The main campus is 3 miles away and you have to take a bus.

My best friend/almost boyfriend(wink wink) TURNED DOWN PRINCETON AND BROWN FOR NW!!! AGGH... not that its not a good school....AND HE SEEMS HAPPY WITH HIS DECISION...EVEN WANTED ME TO APPLY...anyway, heres my two cents...
THe classes are VERY rigorous, but i think anyone who gets accepted there can handle it. THe quarter grading system or whatever they have MAKES SURE they never stop studying for exams, etc. The social scene is good(when ppl stop studying) lol. Tons of ECs and stuff to keep ppl busy. As far as i can tell, the ppl are friendly and a tight knit bunch.
if u want my friend's stats...just email me or whatever!

hey there! here's some info on NU for those of you who are interested (my brother and good friend are current undergraduates). when i think of NU, i immediately think of the vibrant student body (each time i've gone to visit i've been so impressed by the articulate, outgoing, spirited people i've encountered). there are countless ECs and student clubs, and apparently freshman are always welcomed and encouraged to join. my brother is big into the a capella scene (he's a member of purple haze) and is close friends with many theater and music majors who rave about NU's performing arts program. also keep in mind that the greek system is big at NU (i think 40-50% involved), though you're not required to join or anything. i strongly encourage any of you who are interested in NU to visit. you will love Evanston. it's a charming suburb with a wide variety of stores and eateries, and if you're feeling restless, it's about 20-30 minutes from Chicago. academics are pretty tough - lots of studying. but if you're admitted, you will most likely be able to handle the work load.
if you guys have any other questions, i'd be happy to pass them along to my brother.

Anyone an applicant to the school of music?
| By Erao (Erao) on Monday, April 05, 2004 - 11:15 am: Edit |
I just got accepted into the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern. But I don't want to be completely buried with work. How is the social life? Other than frat parties, I mean. I'm not really much interested in drinking or the Greek life. The other school I got accepted into is Emory University, but they seem to be even more dominated by the Greek scene. I need advice!
