As an Alumni, I thought that this article printed by the Boston Globe today was interesting.
Hopefully it helps a few folks with their college selection process.

Are there any applicants for Fall 2004 on this board or people who have visited the campus? I applied to Northeastern as a last-minute decision and by learning more about the school it has quickly become my #1 over 5 or 6 others. I'm just wondering if someone who has actually visited the campus has any information on what it is actually like. I'm going there over Spring Break, but I'm just curious ... thanks for any help!

Allibug,
We visited Northeastern as part of our trip to Boston visiting campuses with our daughter last year. It is an urban campus, about 60+ acres, in Boston. The campus is more physically "defined" than the Boston University "campus", which is basically many buildings strung out along Commonwealth Avenue. Northeastern is near BU, and together with all the schools in the Boston area, there are college students everywhere. There are quite a bit of newly constructed facilities on the NOrtheastern campus, including academic and residential buildings. A very important thing to consider is that Northeastern is the leading school in co-op education. You are basically there a full time as a freshman, then alternate semesters on campus with employment at your co-op job, related to your field of study. Though not required, I believe the overwhelming majority of students (90% if I recall) participate in the co-op programs. If you are interested in Northeastern, make sure you research how the co-op program works and if it is something that interests you. Several students from my daughter's high school have gone there and seem to be very happy, but it is not a "traditional" college experience, especially with students being away for periods on their co-op jobs. And by all means, visit and attend the info sessions. The admissions counselor and the students who led the tours were very informative. Good luck.

Lvdad,
Thanks for the response! I'm definitely looking for a more "defined" campus, so that sounds great! I also applied to BU, and I just don't know if I'll like the campus as much when I visit. I've done a lot of research on the co-op program so that sounds great, but I'm still not 100% sure on "what I want to be when I grow up," so I don't know how I'll fit into the whole co-op thing. From what I've seen on the website and other places, the campus looks gorgeous, one of the only ones where I can "see" myself there. I love the modern look of so many of the buildings. Thanks for the information!
Mallorybee,
I found your name in another thread and it was kind of weird that we have the exact same SAT ... lol (but different breakup ... 710m, 720v)(even though I submitted ACT only to NU). Did you apply by Jan. 1 for scholarships? Where are you from? I read in one of your posts that you don't like Boston ... what made you apply to Northeastern? Anyways, good luck in this whole college process!

I applied to Northeastern as an Express Applicant. Now I'm kinda worried about if I can get in because I only have a total of 1170 on my SAT scores. Oh well, I guess I'll find out if I get in during the end of this month
By Lvdad (Lvdad) on Sunday, January 11, 2004 - 06:33 pm: Edit
Allibug,
Just as a follow up, BU definately does not have a "defined" campus - most of its buildings are located along a long stretch of Commonwealth Avenue, and are an integral part of the surrounding city. Having said that, the lack of a defined campus may or may not turn you off. When we visited with my daughter, she did not think she would like it either (based on what she read and heard from others), but the setting in Boston actually excited her. She stayed there several weeks last year for a summer program and absolutely loved it. The Northeastern and BU campuses are actually relatively near each other. Good luck with your search.

I hear that the decisions have been mailed.
I applied to NEU too. NEU is more like a safety(or so I like to think) for me 'coz my SAT-I score(1460) is way above the mean.
Have any of you got your decision letters yet????
I'll get it in another 10 days or so, 'coz I live in India and it takes time to reach here
By Allibug (Allibug) on Monday, February 02, 2004 - 06:23 am: Edit
Where did you hear that decisions have been mailed? That makes me nervous ... NEU is (hopefully) a safety for me, too ... I have a 35 ACT ... but I'm really nervous about scholarships. If I don't get a full ride then I can't go and I really, really want to go!
Rashmi, did you apply by the Jan. 1 deadline? I'm assuming so ... anyways, let me know what you hear and good luck!

allibug-- i applied bc my friend goes there and loves it but i'm 99.999% sure that im not gonna go. i think that i would feel kinda lost in the crowd... theres so many colleges in boston! well, good luck with everything anyways!

My son just got a letter inviting him to the Honors program on Sat., he got his acceptance the end of January. The letter said that the program was for the top ten percent of applicants. Nothing re scholarships.
I wouldn't worry - the admissions office originally said that notifications would be sent between March 1st and April 1st.
He just applied regular admission - the application was send in early November.

I'm still awaiting word from UMD-CP so im not sure if Northeastern is where i'm going to go in the fall...but it's a GREAT school....good luck to all who applied!

My mom and I bought plane tickets today to go up to Boston in April to tour the NEU campus and a few others before I make my final decision. Any Boston locals out there who have any suggestions on how to enjoyably spend an afternoon or two? We'll get there on a Thursday night and leave on a Sunday afternoon, so that's two full days with only three colleges to visit (NEU, BU, BC) ... any suggestions?

what's the scholarship for?
being one of the best applicants in terms of academics? or something else?
i thought i was a pretty overqualified applicant...
If i were to choose BU and NeU, I would be very confused. I applied to both. BU is tier one (i think), but...it's kind of big and confusing and i don't know how good the education is there (i haven't been hearing too spectacular of things...)

sat-1430 (740 verbal/690 math)
99.2 average (we don't have a normal gpa system)

i think the scholarship was based just on academics, but i have good extracuriculars too, so that could have been a factor.... i hope everyone else gets in too!

Well, if you're looking for real-world experience, the co-op program is the best in the nation. The honors program is incredible, the campus is gorgeous, the location is great, and it just seems like a very "friendly" school. NEU has invested so much money recently into improving both the academic and student life aspects of the school ... check out www.northeastern.edu or www.nu-news.com for more info. The school is steadily climbing the quality ladder and, consequently, the selectivity ladder.

So I'm eagerly awaiting my scholarship letter to see if I can attend! NEU wasn't even a major consideration for me when the whole college search began but I "accidentally" stumbled upon the website earlier this school year and it quickly became #1! Mitsucar2004, I think you have a good chance, especially with your SAT I and II scores. Heck, I got in with a lower SAT score and I didn't even take any subject tests. Hopefully, you'll receive your acceptance letter on Monday. My acceptance letter was mailed out on March 3. Good luck!

1150 SAT I
25 out of 221 Rank (that should go up by end of this year)
I take the most rigorous courseload. No APs available, but I do take college courses at the nearest technical college (Analytical Geometry & Calculus I, English 101 & 102, and Sociology 101)
ROTC (9-10)
National Honor Society (10)
Mu Alpha Theta (11-12)
Future Business Leaders of America (11-12)..I won some awards for Business Calculations and have been competing at State Level for 2 years in a row)
French Club (11-12)
Recently finished an internship at local newspaper, where I wrote articles on career choices and what teens can expect to accomplish in each field.

E-i-C of school newspaper
NHS President
President of one other club on campus
Lots of state-level writing/journalism awards
2000+ community service hours
Lots of other fun stuff
I applied to the College of Arts and Sciences ... my main concern is about scholarships because, basically, if I don't have the whole thing paid for I can't go. So ... I'm eagerly awaiting the scholarship notification letter! lol
Good luck, Mitsucar!

Sorry, lovetheriver, but NEU is my #1 choice ... I just pray that the scholarship commmittee takes me seriously ... lol
My parents think I'm crazy, too, but this really is my first choice ... the thing is, they can't afford to pay for it and it doesn't help that they don't think it's "worth" the tuition. And I really don't think I'm "too good" for it ... I just love everything about the school. The honors program, the gorgeous campus, Boston, the Marino Rec Center, the dorms, heck, even the food sounds great! lol ... Over all my other schools, I can "see" myself at NEU the most.

i called them up, and they told me that i wouldn't be notified about financial stuff until a few days (i think it's b/c i handed everything finance-related in late: oops). they also said that they send the invitation to the honors program separately.
could you guys tell me a little bit about the honors program? i know something like the top 2% of applicants are invited--but numerically, what does that entail? what's so great about the program? etc. i don't know if i'm in the honors program or not, but i'm wondering if i'd qualify.

Basically, *if* I get invited into the honors program and *if* I get enough in scholarship $$ to pay for NEU, I will live in the honors dorms. I definitely want to get to know the kids I'm going to class with more, and I don't think it would be exclusive of the other NEU students at all. Even the honors program is very diverse.
But the big *if* here is *if* I even end up going to NEU ... it's my #1 choice but it's all going to come down to the financial aid letter that I'm so eagerly awaiting the delivery of! lol

yay, i got into the honors program!
i found out today, and i live in NJ. i should be getting info about financial aid in another week or so (i was accepted to neu on the eighth, i believe).
By Steph0503 (Steph0503) on Saturday, March 13, 2004 - 04:39 pm: Edit
Hm, so I guess that means I wasn't accepted then. I live in NJ, and I haven't gotten an email nor mail about it, unless they sent it out to honors program people first.
By Rashmi (Rashmi) on Saturday, March 13, 2004 - 11:21 pm: Edit
I mailed them and they said that the decisions will be mailed all this month. So no sweat

Does anybody know about TRANSFERRING to NEU?
And IF I had a choice between NEU and BU, I'd pick NEU even though academically, BU is ahead. NEU is more diverse.

By Frenchie (Frenchie) on Monday, March 15, 2004 - 06:46 pm: Edit
No its not mandatory, but I am going to attend. Where have you been accepted into?
By Allibug (Allibug) on Monday, March 15, 2004 - 09:06 pm: Edit
I got my honors program letter today ... one more week until scholarship letters! lol
I'm coincidentally going to be in Boston during one of the honors program presentations, but I'm not going to "Welcome Day" or anything. I'm saving up my money for airfare for summer orientation ... I didn't realize we did everything *before* school starts!

By Allibug (Allibug) on Thursday, March 18, 2004 - 08:08 pm: Edit
Not yet, but I know when I called the admissions office they said that financial aid letters are mailed two weeks after acceptance letters. Good luck!

I hate the wait!
By Allibug (Allibug) on Thursday, March 18, 2004 - 10:29 pm: Edit
Oh, I know it!
I came home from school yesterday and right as I walked into the door my mom held an envelope up to my face from Northeastern. Thinking it was my financial aid info, my heart just about stopped! lol
Turns out it was a letter from the head of the chemistry department instead ... I was relieved yet even more frustrated!
By Lovetheriver (Lovetheriver) on Thursday, March 18, 2004 - 11:21 pm: Edit
head of the chem department?
are you really good?
By Mallorybee (Mallorybee) on Friday, March 19, 2004 - 02:07 pm: Edit
allibug...i think its pretty safe to say that you'll be getting a scholarship to neu... so i just wanted to let you know that the scholarship letter comes BEFORE their financial notification thing and the scholarship letter is in a regular envelope, not a big one. lol maybe i'm just a huge dork but i always wonder things like that when i check my mail... well good luck! i'm keeping my fingers crossed that you'll get what you want.
By Excusememixed (Excusememixed) on Friday, March 19, 2004 - 02:23 pm: Edit
I got my scholarship letter today. $5000 a year, which isn't pretty bad, considering, I didn't think I was eligible for any awards...lol.
By Allibug (Allibug) on Friday, March 19, 2004 - 02:58 pm: Edit
Financial aid came today ... $15,000 a year ... I really don't want to complain, but I expected at least a little more. I know I should be grateful for what I got, and I am, but I don't know ... it's a horrible feeling when your #1 school goes from "I can't imagine going anywhere else!" to "Forget that." Kleenex boxes are in short supply right now ... I hate being so emotional.
By Lovetheriver (Lovetheriver) on Friday, March 19, 2004 - 06:24 pm: Edit
you got a scholarship for 15000 a year? or what?
or do you have to pay that much each year?
By Socaljessie (Socaljessie) on Friday, March 19, 2004 - 08:18 pm: Edit
I got 22 K in financial aid, a 5 K scholarship. I had NO IDEA room and board was over 9000 dollars so it looks like i won't be going there.
By Allibug (Allibug) on Saturday, March 20, 2004 - 06:43 am: Edit
Sorry for not clarifying ... I got the Dean's scholarship for $15,000 a year. And sorry about that post ... it was a little dramatic! lol
Does anyone have any experience bargaining with financial aid offices? lol
By Lovetheriver (Lovetheriver) on Saturday, March 20, 2004 - 12:22 pm: Edit
that doesn't mean it's the only scholarship you're getting, i don't think. or did you get your whole financial aid package already?
By Allibug (Allibug) on Saturday, March 20, 2004 - 01:59 pm: Edit
That was the whole financial aid package. I got like $2000 a year in Stafford loans, but that's about it! I'm going to meet with the financial aid office when I'm up there in two weeks to see if there's anything else I can do. Advice, anyone?
By Excusememixed (Excusememixed) on Saturday, March 20, 2004 - 06:21 pm: Edit
Why is room & board $9000?! That's like half-tuition at some schools..lol.
By Allibug (Allibug) on Saturday, March 20, 2004 - 09:43 pm: Edit
That's like two times tuition at my third-choice school! lol
By Excusememixed (Excusememixed) on Saturday, March 20, 2004 - 09:57 pm: Edit
Do you pay for tuition all at once or in payment plans? Their prices suck, but I still love that school. Go NEU!
Thankfully, I have backup schools, who aren't as expensive.

My best friend just called to tell me that he got into Northeastern for the Spring semester. Basically, he was told he was better than many applicants, but there were just so many...I'm sorry that's such crap. He sent in his application in early December and finally finds out today? He's taking it better than I am, but I think it's just so unfair that he got his application in WAY before the deadline and is told he is better than many students, yet he can only go for the Spring semester. Anyone else get this deal?
By Steph0503 (Steph0503) on Friday, March 26, 2004 - 03:56 pm: Edit
Well I got waitlisted today. Since they had 24,000 applications and only 2,800 spots, I suppose its fair I got waitlisted then. Its fine since I got into Syracuse and American U. I called the admissions office and they said that about 1,000 applicants were waitlisted. I'm going reserve a place on the waitlist though to see if I get in at the end.

gotten into UCSB, Fairfield, Wagner, & UCSC, and waitlisted for Santa Clara.
I am really hoping to get into Fordham,& Trinity

Got into NEU today, I just found out through email. Wonder why they took so long to give me a decision, I thought I was gonna get rejected... Anyway, I also got into Emerson which is great since I plan to study communications in fall, but I honestly dont like the campus that much. Its in the middle of the city and has just about no green. NEU has a gorgeous campus, I love it so much, but if I wanna study communications, isnt it better that I go to Emerson? Please give me advice, anything will do.

how jealous am i? all i wanted to do was go to bc and i didnt get in. really quite disappointing. so its northeastern for me, most likely. also got into villanova and u delaware honors program. anyone have any thoughts? i havent visited northeastern yet, but the deans scholarship looks nice as well as the location.
By Citychicboston (Citychicboston) on Wednesday, March 31, 2004 - 08:39 pm: Edit
soundofthesun: i got got waitlisted at BC, into NEU, and into 'nova also. have you visited Villanova? i went when the campus was closed for christmas, but it was so beautiful and i hear it's very similar to BC. so if you like philly, i'd give it a second look. also got the dean's scholarship tho. i won't be considering nova unless they give me equal or more $. good luck!
By Soundofthesun (Soundofthesun) on Friday, April 02, 2004 - 09:48 pm: Edit
citychic boston: yeah i really liked nova when i visited this summer. it is similar to bc in the atmosphere on campus...structually and socially. the biggest downside for me about villanova is the location. philly is a scummy city ( i live in jersey, armpit of america, and even i dont like philadelphia)...nova is far enough outside of the city that it isnt so associated with it. but i dont see there being much else around, you know? plus, villanova has high level academics and programs but lacks the endowment support that you find at bc. so, no financial aid. they gave me 4 thousand out of the whole 39. not good. hey where are you from?

By Yacht_Boy (Yacht_Boy) on Saturday, April 03, 2004 - 01:49 pm: Edit
Not to worry, I'm going into my middler (3rd) year at NU and I still haven't gotten MY aid package for next year yet.
To those of you who got a dean's scholarship: Congrats! Don't be disappointed, that's a very good scholarship, same one that I got. And yes, NU is expensive, but you do make up some of that in Co-op because you're getting paid for 6 months a year, frequently at pretty decent wages-I have friends in engineering and sciences who make 17 or 18 an hour, although the average is probably closer to 12. Plus you need to remember that during the three years you're on Co-op, you pay less in tuition, so the bite isn't as bad as it sounds.
As for NU to BC: It's apples and oranges. BC is on a completely different planet as far as I'm concerned. If you like NU for the city campus, the feeling of being in the middle of everything, etc, you probably won't like BC. If you like BC's suburban feel, lawns, trees, etc, you probably won't like NU. They both have their ups and downs. BU just sucks. Don't go there.
As far as living expenses: Boston is a big city, and it's expensive. You can get cheaper dorms, but they're not the greatest. Be warned that freshman dorms tend to not be so nice, but the upperclass dorms, especially the new ones on West Campus, can be downright palatial if you're lucky enough to get one. Plus, you can always get a place off campus after your first year, often for less money.
Co-op versus no co-op. If you do three six month co-ops, school takes 5 years, and you do not get summer breaks after your first summer. If you do not want to do co-op, go to another school. You're missing the point. 75% of what makes it a great school is co-op.
To the communications major who got into Emerson: GO TO EMERSON!!! It's got one of the best communications programs in the country and a fantastic, nationally known radio station. The campus is nice, right on the common-all the trees and plants you could want, and the Downtown Crossing/Chinatown area is pretty fun and very convenient.
I don't hang out on this board, just happened across it in a google search, so if you want to discuss further, drop me a line: turgeon.ja AT neu DOT edu
Please do your homework before asking me questions about common stuff that you can find on the NEU website. I'll be happy to answer questions about what campus life is like, etc. By the way, we need more Geology/Environmental Geology/Environmental Science majors in a bad way, so if you like to go hiking, play outside, get dirty, think science is fun, or are just a tree-hugger, consider us-we want you!

I went to the welcome day yesterday...I am an international student from England. to say I was totally impressed withthe school is an understatement. the school had tat "all american" campus feel but was like 5 mins walk to all the shops and restaurants and Boston. It was like such a lovelly campus and the people there were so nice. It was a very imppressive day with all the people I met at there really nice and friendly.
Did anyone else go yesterday......I think Ive made up my mind
By Bronwynwin (Bronwynwin) on Tuesday, April 06, 2004 - 12:47 am: Edit
I have not even gotten a letter yet. I applied well before the deadline.. And now of course I am even more depressed than I was. They gave me a lot of reason to believe that I would get in. It's a very long story, but I have a weird situation, which I think makes me a stronger person and applicant... An admissions official pretty much told me that, also.
Besides unusual situation and history, 760 SAT verbal... Great recommendations, awesome essay, nice creative writing samples...
Now that I STILL don't have a letter, I'm feeling sure that it will be a rejection when it does come. *sigh* Maybe I shouldn't have come looking for posts about NEU. It was my 1st choice, and now I'm just really sad. Am I the only one who has come back from the mailbox emptyhanded still?

Yacht Boy (if you ever decide to come back and read posts) thanx for all the info! I guess Ill be going to Emerson then, I was just a little concerned about the campus since its seriously in the middle of the city. I didnt see much of a "campus with green".
Bronwynwin
its still the 6th, I got my decision on the 31st of March (by email), and the posts by other people really got me worried about me not getting in. I understand that you would be worried tho, but you could always ask ur school counselor to drop the admission office a line and ask them whats going on. I asked my counselor to do that for me, and I think that sorta got the admission office to get moving
Cheer up, good things will come

waitlisted at NEU - my counselor said it was because of the major i had applied for [music industry], however i've been actually considering changing my major. would that help my chances at getting bumped off the wailist?
By Bronwynwin (Bronwynwin) on Tuesday, April 06, 2004 - 12:39 pm: Edit
Msinnocence,
Thanks for the encouragement.
I have to drive 15 minutes to the post office to get my mail, so I have a lot of time every morning to think about the whole thing. Talk about stressful. And, at the end of my drive today, still no letter.
My story with NEU is a long one. I applied before as a transfer. They told me I had to because I had more than 12 credits. One of my courses ended up being non-transferrable, though, and that put me at 11 credits. A member of the admissions panel called me to let me know I wasn't eligible to transfer but told me he saw absolutely no reason why I wouldn't get in for a future term.
The story gets even more involved after that, but this is not my first time waiting for a letter from them. I am going to be so upset/disappointed if I went through all of this stress again for nothing.
Aggh, sorry for the epistle. LOL Thanks again for the encouragement.

msinnocence... I forgot to ask: You heard through email?? How did that work?
By Msinnocence (Msinnocence) on Tuesday, April 06, 2004 - 01:44 pm: Edit
Bronwynwin
hey no problem, just dont let your chin drop too low! Yeah I did get my decision through email, it said something like this:
Congratulations! On behalf of the International Admissions Committee, I am pleased to offer you admission to the Fall 2004 entering class at Northeastern University. Our community looks forward to welcoming you to the nations most dynamic University, combining outstanding liberal arts and professional studies with the world's finest cooperative education program.
And then it goes on and on about their acceptance packet, which I havent received yet. I gotta say, the admission people arent exactly the nicest of all people. When my counselor called them, he said that they told him that no decisions are given out by phone and just hung up. And when he wrote them an email, they took like 5 days to write back... And when I tried calling to see if my application was complete, the woman talked to me like I was some kinda retard! she said something like "yes....do...you...understand.....what....im....saying...ms.xxxxxx"
I really dont think theyre very organized. Hey, im still waiting for my acceptance packet (altho I wont be going there, itll still be nice to read "congratulations" in black and white) So maybe itll make you feel better to just think that theyre not really taking good care of the admitted students (like forgetting to send an acceptance packet)
but anyway, i do recommend calling them. it said on their webpage that they will be giving out notifications between march 1st-april 1st, and since that has already passed, i think you have the right to call and demand a decision. (dont yell at them tho, that might get them thinking "whoa... violent person, must reject"
well good luck in everything! hope you get in!
By Bronwynwin (Bronwynwin) on Wednesday, April 07, 2004 - 01:55 am: Edit
Msinnocence,
Thanks.
I had the same thought exactly about their website saying that notice would be received between Mar. 1 and April 1. In my opinion, if they don't mean it they shouldn't say it! They need to "relanguage" that, since it is clearly not the case.
I did call today, and I feel much better now. Still apprehensive, but better. At least now I know it's not just a matter of waiting for the already-printed rejection letter to arrive.
Where did you decide to go? Someplace in the U.S. or elsewhere?
By Msinnocence (Msinnocence) on Wednesday, April 07, 2004 - 05:09 am: Edit
Thats good that you called! So wait, did they not tell you your decision? What did they tell you?
I decided to go to Emerson College instead (still in Boston), since they have a better communication program than NEU. Im just sad to leave the gorgeous NEU campus behind, since its the campus that I just sorta fell for. But I guess in Emerson the entire city of Boston is sorta like your campus. In Emerson, I dont think you have a determined campus, which is sorta upsetting... you know, like in those college-life movies you see people roaming around a campus of green, and thats sorta what I wanted too, but oh well, Ill live.
but anyway, Bronwynwin, im glad that youre not sitting there all anxious anymore! hope your decision will come soon!
By Bronwynwin (Bronwynwin) on Thursday, April 08, 2004 - 12:33 am: Edit
I've heard good things about Emerson.. I hope that you love it there. At least Boston is an awesome city.
They didn't tell me my decision because they hadn't made one yet!! Agggh. This admissions guy has been really helpful to me, though, and he promised I would have a decision by the end of the week.. Through email! So, I will pretty much be glued to the computer tomorrow and the next day.
I had almost lost all hope, but now I feel okay about things. I feel qualified, so I sure hope they agree! Money will be a concern.. I guess that's a bridge to be crossed later though.
How did you decide on going to school in Boston?

Phew, I bet that was a big relief! But its weird that they havent made a decision yet... Its been a week since they were supposed to finish giving out decisions. I called the admission office yesterday to ask about my acceptance packet and the guy said that they sent me stuff on march 11th! I only found out about my decision on march 31st, through email! But he said that I should call them again if it doesnt arrive by next week, and then they would FedEx me a new packet. Ill also have an extension in the May 1st deadline.
I decided to go to Boston for college since I lived in RI for a year (10 years ago) and Ive been to Boston as a day trip with my parents quite a few times. I remember loving it, and when I go there for college, I wont feel like a total stranger since I sorta know my way around. And also, I chose to study in the US since I first learned English there (in RI, when I was 8) and I thought itll be great to continue my education in the country where I first started learning English. Its now my first language, and Im not even American!

I went to my welcome day last Saturday, the college of business. I stayed at the Sheraton Boston @ the Prudential Center. Like a ten mintute walk to the campus. AND has a indoor walkway right into the prudential center and the copley mall.
I was so impressed by my welcome day, I came back home and paid my tuition online!!!

I got the Sheraton for around 80 STERLING per night per room. I also got upgraded for a suite for free!!!!!! I was there three nights though. Try expedia..... or look at tripadvisor.com for what people think of hotels.
Is NU your first choice of school? If not what others are you thinking of?

wow nice. sounds like a good deal. id prefer to have a place nearby, in walking distance. of course the t would be fine, but it would be nice to be closer. i was accepted at nu, u delaware honors program, and villanova. wanted to go to bc but it didnt happen. oh well. nu is the best option i have right now...not too expensive (like nova) and academically challenging enough (unlike udel. what were your other choices?
By Frenchie (Frenchie) on Monday, April 12, 2004 - 06:16 am: Edit
Fairfield, CUNY Baruch and Pace. It was only a major toss up between NU and Fairfield. I visted like I said NU and just loved it there. Fairfield iis also a good school, but one that doesnt really fit me personally.

Thistongalkid,
I'm really sorry you didn't get in. The reasoning of admissions people seems to make absolutely no sense sometimes.
Not sure I understand your comment about affirmative action... I am pretty much as white as it gets (actually, part Sami but no tribal affiliation so it's not official and can't be claimed) and can trace back to the Mayflower through both my dad's parents. Not really an advantage at all, LOL
I finally did find out I was accepted on the 14th. Of course, I still don't have my packet. They're going to have to extend some of the deadlines for me...
And I REALLY want to go there, but financial aid has gotta come through in order for that to happen.
I'm totally stressing.

hey guys! I've been looking at colleges lately, and Northeastern was one of them. I was looking into the co-op for nursing, but I was wondering what the average GPA and SAT score is in order to get into NEU? Also, I am a very outgoing person who loves to party but when its time to get work done,I do that first. Is this school a good party school at all? When is the best time to visit the campus? thank you!!
By Strwbrycupcake (Strwbrycupcake) on Wednesday, April 21, 2004 - 10:20 pm: Edit
Jemms,
Im not sure what the average is but you could find that at www.collegeboard.com
What i will say, is that my SATs were a 1390 and northeastern gave me full tuition...so for them, that was considered very high. that may give you an idea of what would be considered on par with their standards.
As for being a party school, the easiest way to answer that question i think is yes. I'm going there in the fall...and so i've been talking more to some of my friends who graduated from my high school in the past years...all they ever do is party. they absolutley love it. But i'm a lot like you, i like to get my work done first..even though i definately a party girl.
i'm not really sure when the best time to visit is, i've been there in the summer, fall and winter...all i know is i don't suggest going in the winter! spring might be nice, it makes for a nice day trip (depending where you're from).
If you need anything else let me know, but i dont officially go there YET! i'm just telling you what i've found through researching the school, and some of the reasons why i chose to go there.

Tuition is enough to make you choke... I still haven't gotten my financial aid packet. *sigh*
Close to 26,000 a year just for tuition. Almost another 10,000 for room and board.

Hi, I got accepted to The college of engineering at Northeastern University with a $10,000/year scholarship. I was really impressed with the campus, more so than BUs. Luckily I will be living in the suburbs of Boston next year so I have no r&b to pay.
Anyway, how do you guys think NEU compares to BU in terms of the academics and how companies react to either NEU or BU on your resume?
The co-op program sounds great to me butim not sure if I will like it once I start it but if you don't like it I think you can always have the option of going without the co-op.
Anyways here is my SAT/GPA etc if you guys are curious.
SAT I: 1280 M:710/V:570
SAT II: MIC:590, W:530, USH:490(lol)
ACT: 27
GPA: 3.3
a couple of honors classes and one AP class(Calc BC)
like 2 extracurulars and a 3 jobs
some really good recomendations

hey everyone, i got waitlisted and i was wondering if there was anything i could do to increase my chances of getting accepted. maybe write a letter or something?
By Leob21 (Leob21) on Saturday, April 24, 2004 - 08:30 pm: Edit
Hey Matt034, I was having the same problem. BU gave me a better aid package than NU, so I was thinking about going there. But I was not impressed with the BU "campus." I cannot picture myself living right on a main road for four years. BU seems to have better academics, but I think NU is on the rise and overall, a more enjoyable place to be. I am probably going to NU.
By Bronwynwin (Bronwynwin) on Sunday, April 25, 2004 - 02:00 am: Edit
Ehakkinen..... Are you Suomilainen? Just the name. Looks Finn to me.
As far as getting off the waitlist-- Yeah, write a letter. Call them. Don't be a pain in the arse, but make it clear that you are interested and have every intention of making NU your 'home' this fall. Be confident, but don't sound pushy... Just clearly state what it is you want and why you think you ought to get it. Then be persistent.
Good luck!! Let us know how it goes.

Has anyone here heard anything (good or bad) about the Behavioral Neuroscience major?
Any info would be cool. Is it a good program in comparison to others at NU? How many students in it?
I know I can ask some of this stuff from the school directly, but I tend to think the answers I get here are going to be way less polished for public consumption.
It would be great to talk to someone who is IN the program now. Not sure how to find someone.
This is my major, and I think I will love it, but I am curious to learn more. It's going to be a lot of work for me, since math is not my favorite or best subject-- It's nothing I can't handle, though.
Any thoughts?
By Socaljessie (Socaljessie) on Sunday, April 25, 2004 - 02:27 am: Edit
*SIGH* I REALLY wanted to go here, but it was just too much $$. Even wih 18,000 in grants and scholarships, it's still too much to handle. It's OK though, UCSD here I come!
By Ehakkinen (Ehakkinen) on Sunday, April 25, 2004 - 11:54 am: Edit
Bronwynwin, i also applied as a behavioral neuroscience major. i haven't really heard too much about it either, other than what's on the website, but it seems really interesting. And yes, i am of finnish heritage..cool that you noticed since not many people do.
By Bronwynwin (Bronwynwin) on Sunday, April 25, 2004 - 12:26 pm: Edit
ehakkinen,
i figured the name had to be finnish. very cool! i only know like 2 words of finnish, but the unique spellings jump out at me almost every time.
that's also cool that you're trying for the behavioral neuroscience program. you really should write a letter, make some phone calls, maybe have someone write another recommendation for you... as long as you're not rude or totally bothersome, probably the more the better.
paiva! let me know what happens.. and also, how did you decide on neuroscience?
By Excusememixed (Excusememixed) on Sunday, April 25, 2004 - 02:24 pm: Edit
Well since I've already sent in my card telling them I won't be attending their college, I hope that clears the way for some of you to get accepted. I really liked the school, but it's too much money. Sucks to be broke..lol.
By Ehakkinen (Ehakkinen) on Sunday, April 25, 2004 - 10:02 pm: Edit
Bronwynwin, i took a neuroscience course a couple summers ago and found it really interesting. i pretty much decided right then and there that it was a potential major. i'm going to have to work like crazy though, since i'm not so great at math myself. anyway, how'd you become interested in it?
By Bronwynwin (Bronwynwin) on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 01:06 am: Edit
Ehakkinen,
I'm not sure there was any one definitive thing that got me interested in neuroscience. It has always fascinated me, though, and I have learned a lot of basic neuroanatomy and stuff like that through having a neurological illness... Although the illness sucks, it is cool that I've learned a lot of stuff I would have had no clue about otherwise.
Wow, I am so glad to see I'm not the only one who is interested in the sciences but not so much in math. It seems like 99% of the people I talk to who are in science programs are also really good at math. I am getting better with math, since I quit being so stubborn, but still.... Ugh.
We should chat on AIM or MSN sometime. I'm bluecaire on AIM, same on messenger, just w/ the hotmail.com after.

Anyone going to the orientation on June 14th........
By Bronwynwin (Bronwynwin) on Sunday, May 02, 2004 - 03:57 pm: Edit
The whole orientation thing is seriously messed up. I understand the need for it, and it's fine with me that they require it..... But what about those of us who live too far away to drive and can't afford to fly out just for two days?
They have a one-day September orientation that is not college or major specific. That really sucks. I don't have the money to fly out, so I have to register for classes later than everyone else, not do all of the orientation stuff specifically for my major, etc.
Why can't they do a real orientation in September? It's so unfair.
By Frenchie (Frenchie) on Sunday, May 02, 2004 - 04:54 pm: Edit

We are approximately the same distance from Boston, although I live in the U.S. (Alaska)
I may still attend one of the summer orientation sessions if I can figure out a way to get there. It's kind of a logistical nightmare, though, so it upsets me that there is no "real" orientation in September.

Ehakkinen,
Yeah, let me know if you'll be joining me in neuroscience.
This is just my opinion, but... If you want to go to NU enough that you're already planning on transferring there, wouldn't it be less of a hassle just to start out there? Of course I totally understand the money issue. I just know that transferring can be such a pain, especially with a school like Northeastern.
Anyway, let me know what you end up doing! It would be cool to know someone else at NU who I at least have something in common with. (same major, ethnic background, I donno what else.. lol)

Hey guys!
I'm new to posting (Long time reader, first time poster).
I just got off of the waitlist at Northeastern after getting the world's worst fin. aid from BU. Anyways, I was wondering that since I am a student who just got off the waitlist and thus has passed the May 1 deadline, will I get campus housing that hasn't been leased from other schools (housing has been guaranteed for me)? Also, what residence hall is the College of Business Administration floor? Thanks, and looking forward to your responses.
By Ehakkinen (Ehakkinen) on Wednesday, May 05, 2004 - 06:58 pm: Edit
Bronwynwin,
Yeah, so I'm not going to Northeastern afterall
I don't have a problem with going to St. Louis University, it's just that the behavioral neuroscience major really interested me a lot. I suppose though that I can create my own major at SLU in the likeness of behavioral neuroscience. Oh well..hope you have fun at Northeastern and if you still want to talk sometime, my AIM screenname is eshakkinen

Just a rather brief run-down:
I was accepted to Emmanuel and waiting-listed for Northeastern.
Yesterday I called to confirm that they had received my intent to be
placed on the waiting list. They had. Three hours later I received a
call and I was accepted. That worked out rather nicely.
I'm going to be attending Northeastern over Emmanuel as a Political
Science major. I'm from New Jersey and I've been to Boston once, a few
weeks ago. I'm mostly a NYC boy.
I've taken a somewhat interesting route and, uhm, for the rest of this
story feel free to IM me.

By Lenk58 (Lenk58) on Wednesday, May 19, 2004 - 01:39 pm: Edit
Yes schools have waitlists. The most desirable schools usually don't have to reach into their waitlists. when you have to reach into your waitlist it means that not enough of the accepted students enrolled, they are enrolling elsewhere.A porevious poster made a phone call and within 3 hours he /she was taken from the waitlist.
By Frenchie (Frenchie) on Wednesday, May 19, 2004 - 06:26 pm: Edit
Coincidence maybe!!! I know a lot of the schools even top schools go into theirs. Lets compare it to say another Boston school like BU ,they have reached into their waitlists. What a silly arguement this is!!!!!!If you dont like NEU dont post here!

The BISB program (Bachelor of Science in International Business) is amazing. The program and is ranked int the top twenty by U.S. News. Students spend a year co-oping and studying a abroad in places like London, Paris, Madrid, Berlin, etc. and can earn a concurrent degree from a European business school. One of the kew features is a language proficency component. You may want consider applying for this program after you finish your freshman year. Check it out here:

FYI,
For those interested in Northeastern. The campus may be expanding a bit in the fall. According to the student newspaper, Northeastern is currently negotiating the purchase of two neighboring properties. One is on Coventry Street (behind the campus) and the other is on Huntington Avenue. The Coventry Street property has a brand new luxury apartment building on it (construction is almost compelete). NEU plans to convert the property into a new residence hall. The second property is the YMCA building (adjacent to NEU's business School). The building is massive, probably 400,000 square feet. The property also includes two parking lots. It is unclear at this point what NEU will do with the building. Northeastern also purchased the air rights over the MBTA tracks which runs through the back of the campus. The current plan to build a park over the tracks and a football stadium in an adjacent parking lot. The football stadium will have a bubble over it so it can be used for club sports in the winter time.

To all attending, do you plan on a desktop or a laptop? To those attending CBA, do you plan on getting a Toshiba? Do you really think that students will be taking their laptops to class often?
Does anyone know what residence hall the CBA house/floor is in?
Is anyone a former "waitlister" like myself?
I hope that this helped. Looking forward to your responses.

I am going to be buying ne of those Tablet PC's that the school is offering. Theyre a real good price. I don't know if people take their laptops to class withthem, maybe if the room has power for them.
What orientation are you going to?

More news from Northeastern. The Boston Globe reported that university is negotiating the purchase of another parcel of land adjacent to the campus on Northhampton Street. The land is currently occupied by a school which will be torn down. The plan is to build a new seven story dorm on the property.

Did anybody read that article in the Globe that talked about a proposed bill to redistribute federal funding for schools. It directly stated that Northeastern would lose a lot of money. I hope this wouldn't affect students financial aid.
By Alan5 (Alan5) on Thursday, June 03, 2004 - 09:31 am: Edit
The total amount that could be lost is only $3.8 million. That's not a huge amount when you consider that NEU's annual operating budget is $500 million.

how is boston different from new york city?
I'm from NJ and live about 45 mins. away from NYC. I told my parents I want to go to NEU & major in marketing (is this even the school to go to for this?) and they told me I should look in NYC instead b/c its closer. Is NEU cheaper than most schools in NYC (I don't know any colleges in NYC for advertising/marketing majors) and is it better off? How good a school is NEU?
my stats:
3.6WGPA
1200 SAT
honors & ap classes since soph. year, except for math
sadd, key, yrbk, spanish club
NHS
Rank 16 of 275
Over 250 hrs community service
I'm a minority

NYC - I think you would have good scores to get in NEU. I am an incoming freshman this year and have been to orientation. This year their average SAT score was in the 1200 range. I am also a business major and met many people on the orientation doing marketing majors. I would say it is a great school to do this at, and think of all the work experience you will have when you graduate.

Northeastern's rise in reputation is starting to show in some of the 2005 college guides. For example, this year, Barrons upgraded NEU from "Very Competitive" to "Highly Competitive." That's only slightly lower than Boston University which is rated as "Highly Competitive+."
By Lenk58 (Lenk58) on Monday, June 28, 2004 - 03:42 pm: Edit
It better start showing somewhere, because according to US News it's a tier 3 school. Plain and simple
By Alan5 (Alan5) on Monday, June 28, 2004 - 04:23 pm: Edit
LOL, stop citing two year old U.S. News Rankings. According to the new Barron's guide, Northeastern is "HIGHLY COMPETITIVE" which is the second highest rating.
By Alan5 (Alan5) on Monday, June 28, 2004 - 04:44 pm: Edit
NORTHEASTERN AND RANKINGS
1. Ranked “Highly Competitive” by Barrons and one of the “Best Buys in Higher Education”;
2. Ranked #1 by U.S. News for co-ops and internships;
3. Rated as one of the Top Colleges in the Northeast by the Princeton Review;
4. Ranked in the top 60 for engineering by U.S. News and Graduates Online;
5. Ranked in the top 30 for EE by the NRC;
6. Ranked #1 by Computer World for High Tech Business;
7. Ranked #27 for Entrepreneurship programs by Success Magazine;
8. Ranked in the top twenty for international business by U.S. News;
9. Ranked in the top 25 by the NRC for Oceanography; and
10. Ranked as a Research II institution by the Carnegie Foundation (second highest ranking).
11. The Law School is ranked in the second tier by U.S. News.
Obviously, Northeastern is a good school.
By Lenk58 (Lenk58) on Friday, July 02, 2004 - 10:47 am: Edit
It's so obvious to Alan, however, I guess it's not obvious to US News which rates it a Tier 3 School. It is also not obvious to many because they always have to go deep into the waitlist to fill spots.Facts are hard to argue with.
By Alan5 (Alan5) on Saturday, July 03, 2004 - 09:19 am: Edit
Obvioulsy US News is not the only source for rankings (its only one source). The other rankings cited above clearly show that Northeastern is a good school. The U.S. News "Tier III" ranking is based on outdated information. But look for NEU to move up a tier when the new rankings come out next month.

to end the dispute:
Lenk,
Although northeastern did rank tier 3 in the edition of Us news that you're referring to, this proves very little about a school.
To explain:
students who choose northeastern are not about statistics and in your words "facts". northeastern's students are about getting the best education they can in a city as awesome as boston at a school as well-rounded as northeastern.
The reason northeastern dips into their wait-list is because of people like you. People who don't understand the value of the co-op program and don't take time to look into individual schools, but instead get their information from college guides written by opinionated people who are probably nothing like you and care very little about what college you attend as long as you buy their guide and they make money off of you.
Northeastern is for students who do their research themselves. The kind who visit the school, and ask questions about the elements of a college that are important to them as individuals instead of obsessing over a ranking and making a decision based on the opinion of a writer whom you have never met.
The people who base their decisions on such rankings, admitedly do not choose northeastern-and rightfully so. Northeastern would not have suited them anyway. And therefore northeastern dips into their waiting list and admits students who are more enthusiastic about their education, and less superficial.
I may be going to a tier 3 school which admitted students off of a waiting list, but I am proud to say I am going to a college that has more than just a good name for itself in US News.
I had great grades, class rank, all AP classes, 1390 on my SATS and every other school I applied to I was also accepted into. Each of these other schools ranked higher in US News than Northeastern: UConn, Boston U., Tulane, and Boston College. Yet, I still chose Northeastern. I suppose that is just the kind of student northeastern is looking for...one who has her priorities straight.
Glad thats settled.

Well said strwbry cup cake. There are many students like you at NEU who see the value of the co-op program and the benefits of going to school in one of the best cities in America.
However, based on my research, I am very confident that Northeastern will move up to Tier II when the new U.S. News rankings issue comes out next month. But even if it doesn't, NEU will still be a great school.
By Leob21 (Leob21) on Monday, July 19, 2004 - 06:33 pm: Edit
I don’t know who this Lenk character thinks he is, coming into Northeastern’s own discussion board and criticizing the school, but I fully agree with Lindsey. I too, was accepted to schools with better “rankings” (BU, Providence College, Fordham), and even though I received great financial aid from all of these places I still choose Northeastern over them. I scored a 1300 on my SAT’s and have six passing AP credits with all 4’s and 5’s. I could have enrolled in other schools with better “rankings,” but why would I want to. Are we forgetting a very important ranking that makes Northeastern stand out from other schools? (It’s #1 internship ranking!) The co-op program was indeed one of the reasons why I decided on Northeastern. There is a special vitality about Northeastern that makes it unique; it’s right in Boston with a beautiful campus, brand-new facilities, and the internship opportunities are unmatched. I’ve read your other posts, Lenk, and if you think you’re getting something better at Villanova, I’d beg to differ. I visited Villanova, and from my impression it’s nothing more than ordinary, sitting in some boring suburb far out of Philadelphia. I don’t know what your grudge is with Northeastern, but do you really think you’re in a position to be denouncing it in every post? And even if you’re going to, why don’t you try coming up with a different line than “It’s a tier three school and it’s reaching far into its waitlist.” By the way, using the waitlist is not necessarily a bad thing. Some schools, such as GW, are actually using the waitlist more in order to improve their rankings! This lets them accept less and ups the yield percentage (they know people want to get in off the waitlist, but how do they know a regular applicant will accept the offer of admission?). You see? So before you start making blatant and immature remarks about a school, why don’t you sit back and think about the broader picture, rather than staring at some rankings and go off like a broken record. I was able to look past the rankings when making my college selection, and I know that I made the right choice. Perhaps you should have done the same when choosing your college. But don’t worry; I’m sure college will open up your mind a little bit. Who knows, you may even gain the skills to use more than one point in your argument (Tier three, waitlist). It gets old.
By Alan5 (Alan5) on Tuesday, July 20, 2004 - 08:00 am: Edit
Well said. Lenk does sound like a broken record (a bad one). Who cares what he thinks anyway. Northeastern has a higher yield and lower acceptance rate than Villanova and a much better internship program. Plus Boston is much better place to go school than any suburb in Philly.
By the way, have you guys seen those annoying Phildelphia tourism commercials on TV? Philly's claim to fame is Cheese Steak--LOL!

I agree with the above posters about NEU. I did not choose it because of rankings (I also got accepted to Boston University).
I chose it because of the campus, the people there seemed great, and that's where I will get the better education.
By Alan5 (Alan5) on Tuesday, July 20, 2004 - 02:58 pm: Edit
The rankings are really meaningless in the grand scheme of things because not everyone has the same needs. Some people would be happier at a small liberal arts college in the burbs where students are more insulated from the real world and the hustle and bustle of the city. Many of my friends who went to these types of schools spent their summers working as life guards or caddying at golf courses. By contrast, the type of students who pick Northeastern are more of the go getter types who want to get into the real world as soon as possible and prefer the excitement of an urban environment and all it has to offer. Northeastern students spend their summers (and the rest of the year) doing real resume building work at top companies like Fidelity, The Boston Globe, Microsoft, Sun, and EMC (founded by a Northeastern grad). Take it from me, going to school in a major city like Boston is an education in itself. You will learn to become more street savvy, confident, tolerant, and cultured through your exposure to a much greater diversity of people and ideas. So if you are afraid to ride subway by yourself, and would like to avoid interacting with people with a different background, race, or socioeconomic level than yourself, look elsewhere. As a former suburbanite, I can tell you that going to Northeastern was the one of the best things that I ever did.

FYI, the Princeton Review's Best 357 Colleges Guide for 2005 which came out yesterday had some interesting changes. According to the guide, Northeastern is now "one of the most selective schools in Boston." The 2004 versions said that NEU was only "moderately selective" and a "popular saftey." Three years ago, the guide said that NEU was "less selective." Times are a changing! Getting into NEU will be even harder this year.
By Lenk58 (Lenk58) on Wednesday, August 18, 2004 - 01:23 pm: Edit
Alan its funny how you hype this school. princton review says "teaches make themselves scarce". Academic rating of 77 which is low.selectivity of 91 which even though they are all infalted it's not that high. 66% with phd's. Doesn't look so hot Alan. I must tell you though that I don't put a lot of faith in these ratings, however, as soon as they came out I knew you would hype and pump. I think everyone on the board feels rthe same way about your posts. It's a little sad but I have noticed since you have been getting flack you have included someother schools. So instead of just hyping NEU so deflect.
By Alan5 (Alan5) on Wednesday, August 18, 2004 - 09:35 pm: Edit
LOL! in case you forgot, this is a Northeastern thread. By the way, the PR stat showing the percentage of faculty with PHDs is incorrect. According to U.S. News, 89% of NEU's faculty have PHDs which is relatively high. You also forgot to mention NEU's high quality of life rating of 90. The 77 academic rating isn't bad when you consider that its only slightly below Boston University's rating and much higher than that of UMass which is only a 65. And please explain how NEU's selectivity rating is inflated at 91? As the hard copy of the PR Guide States "Northeastern is one of the most selective schools in Boston. It has a large applicant pool and a low acceptance rate."
Nice try though.
If you don't like Northeastern, then don't read my posts.
By Alan5 (Alan5) on Thursday, August 19, 2004 - 02:34 pm: Edit
Northeastern is now Tier II!!!! Sure its at the lower end of the second tier, but its no longer in the unranked third tier (i.e. the abyss).
Lenk is going to have to come up with something new to say!
LOL!
By Lenk58 (Lenk58) on Thursday, August 19, 2004 - 02:44 pm: Edit
Alan only you could hype a lower end tier 2 school. LOL. Something to be very proud of .
By Alan5 (Alan5) on Thursday, August 19, 2004 - 03:06 pm: Edit
So you have come up with something new to say.
So when NEU is in the middle of tier II, are you going to say that "only you could hype a middle tier 2 school.?"
Just give it up and accept defeat.
By Lenk58 (Lenk58) on Thursday, August 19, 2004 - 03:40 pm: Edit
Alan the sad part is that you are known on all of these boards for yor hyping and pumping of NEU. As I have said before it's great to be proud of your, however, we all know you always go to the extreme. If you want to continue to hype and pump Neu we can't stop you but that is why i have responded. A lower end tier 2 is fine and I am sure NEU has many fine points but your hyping is way out there. When you look at the numbers such as peer , Grad rates, selectivity, academic ratings, retention rates, etc. There is really not that much to hype. I guess you thought the ratings were going to really improve.
As for accepting defeat, I don't think so because I deal in facts and numbers. You as we all have seen , deal in hype.

3. Northeastern is rated a "Highly Competitive" by Barrons and "More Selective" by U.S. News. NEU also has a selectivity rating of 91 in PR---Check!
4. Northeastern has a nice campus and amazing facilities--Check!
5. Northeastern is in the process of hiring 100 new tenure track faculty--Check!
6. 89% of NEU's current faculty have PHD's--Check!
7. Northeastern receives almost 25,000 applications for 2800 spots in the frosh class and had an acceptance rate this year of 42%--Check!
8. Northeastern has the top internship/co-op program in the country--check!
9. Top companies hire at Northeastern, including Merrill Lynch, Microsoft, EMC, Raytheon, and Fidelity--Check!
10. Northeastern dominates business case competitions against local competitors, including BU, Babson. MIT, and Bentley--Check!
11. Northeastern is a Tier II school!!!!!!!!--Check!

News from Northeastern:
The Boston Revelopment Authority just approved two new residence halls for Northeastern. One building will be 135,000 square feet and house honors students. The second is a newly constructed luxury apartment building which Northeastern purchased over the summer. Northeastern is also working on a new master plan which should be completed fairly soon. Here is the old one:

Most of the buildings in the above plan have already been completed. The new plan should be very interesting. It is expected to include a new football stadium, and possibly new buildings for the business school and law school.

ok, so maybe alan is hyping it a lot. but sorry lenk, he has all the reasons to. northeastern is looking to be an increasingly excellent school. i've enjoyed both of you arguing over the school, and i awaited to see your reaction as soon as the new rankings came up, and now there's not much else for you to say, lenk... lol. anyway, northeastern looks to be a great school. i'm definitely looking into it, and anyone else who thinks of doing so - don't, so it's easier for me to get in... lol.
By Soundofthesun (Soundofthesun) on Tuesday, August 24, 2004 - 11:27 pm: Edit
ccguy, go for it. this whole debate is pointless...college selection is an intensely personal decision, and cannot be made solely on the statistical ranking of outside organizations and/or parties. you are your own ranking service, as are all prospective college-bound students. we each look at schools, and after taking selectivity in mind, find the one that is, ultimately, right for us. how else can you explain inconsistent acceptance based on numbers and figures, or students who choose tier two and sometimes three institutions over the nations top universities? sure, everyone goes where the money lies. but i, like many others in this board, was more than happy to enroll at northeastern over schools like boston college, villanova university, college of william and mary, and university of virginia. sure, i was accepted and got similar financial packages to some. but northeastern fit me as the individual i am--not the demographic that us news or the princeton review lumps me into. seems to me that these quibbles over whether or not neu is a good school are moot...obviously lenk shouldnt go to neu and alan made a good choice for him. so, children, while ive been slightly amused by all this crap for the past 2 or 3 months, i think its high time to grow up a bit and allow some useful conversation to continue. any class of 09'ers living in white hall? im moving in on the 4th.

Mirela,
You can send in your documents whenever as long as it's before that date. However, how sure are you that you will get money from northeastern? because if it's almost definate it doesnt matter probably, but my guess is that if you send it in too early, and they review it..if they're not positive on what they want to do they'll hold off just in case a better applicant comes along. Whereas, at the end either they'll be trying to give away the money because they held off too long, or they'll be short because they gave it out too quick. I dont know, i think sending it in early has it's upsides but so does sending it late. Maybe sometime in early november? I sent mine in at the last possible minute and ended up with a full scholarship. I dont know if had anything to do with timing, but it may be something to consider...

I have three questions about NEU:
1. What are the dorms like in terms of size and quality?
2. I have heard that a lot of NEU professors don't speak English well or have a bad accent that hurts understanding. Is this rumor true? I got this from the forums in Campusdirt.com
3. Also, my daughter is considering graphic design and multimedia design majors. How are these majors there? If you know anything about these majors, I would like some insight.

Hey Mom102,
1. NEU has some of the best dorms in Boston. They are more like luxury apartments. Here's an example:
http://www.rawnarch.com/selproj2.html
2. Most of NEU profs speak perfect english. But like most large research universities, there are a few foriegn profs who may have an accent, but these profs usually teach in the engineering college.
3. The graphic design and multimedia majors are very good.

There is an interesting article written by NEU's president in the Atlantic Monthly (October 2004 edition) about the integration of pre-professional studies, liberal arts, and internships (i.e. NEU's curriculum). Here is the article:

What was your SAT score and which program are you applying for? Some of NEU's programs are harder to get into than others.

CAS.
History or English is what I am putting on the app, they dont require sat scores for transfers. unless I am mistaken. I have 27 credits finished from my current school. I'm taking another 15 this semester and also took 15 in h.s. (total 57) so according to the booklet I dont think I need sats.
thanks anxiously awaiting predictions..!

I think that you have a decent shot. Transferring in is much easier than regular admission. Have you visited the campus yet. If so, what did you think of the facilities?
By Sadtoknow (Sadtoknow) on Thursday, September 16, 2004 - 11:56 am: Edit
I have visited the campus, I loved it. The first time I went and just wandered around with a friend. I came back a second time and took the official tour, but couldnt find the visitors center, and met several professors who went out of there way to get me where I needed to be, also met a few students who had alot of good things to say. Alot of the people in my tour group had come to check out BU and after seeing the campus put NU at the top of thier list.
I would have liked to go to one of those transfer info sessions but there arent any.
And theres no "decision days" for the spring.
Oh yeah Im applying for Spring 05' forgot to mention that, does that change anything?
By Alan5 (Alan5) on Thursday, September 16, 2004 - 12:24 pm: Edit
I think that you should be fine for Spring 05. I'm glad to hear that you liked the campus. By the way, the History Department at NEU is excellent. The best professors are Raymond Robinson, Clay McShane, and Charmarie Blaisdell. You should also check out NEU's study abroad program. I spent my junior year abroad in England (amazing experience!!!).
Good luck.

Im glad to here your prediction, I was a little worried when I heard about NEU's recent drop (or is it raise?) in selectivity from 61% to 47% and the higher gpa's for freshman..
PS. were you a history major?
any idea what a co-op for history would be like?
By Alan5 (Alan5) on Thursday, September 16, 2004 - 07:13 pm: Edit
Yes, Northeastern is getting to be very competitive. But getting in as a transfer is less difficult than frosh admission where you would be competiting against 25,000 other applicants for one of the 2800 seats in the first year class.
History Students can co-op at the many Historical Societies and Museums in Boston. But some of the best co-ops are working with National Park Service at one of many sites on the Freedom Trail.
I would prefer not to disclose any personal info about myself, as I would like to remain anonymous. All I will say is that I graduated from the College of Arts & Sciences.

Thanks again for all the info I definitly respect your privacy. Just spoke to an admissions counciler and unfortunatly no imediate decisions...I had the feeling though that if I asked for an exception they would give it to me. Anyone know if this is common ?
Also my essays are a little longer than requested
the one about why I would like to go to neu is like 175 words which is 75 over..
anyone have this problem?

FYI,
Northeastern is currently working on a new Institutional Masterplan. The old plan which was developed in 1999 is almost complete. Here is the old plan:
http://www.neu.edu/masterplan/
The old plan added about 15 new buildings to the campus at a cost of $500 million. The only building that remains to be completed under the old plan is a new residence hall for Honors students (building F in the old plan). The new plan, which will come out later this year, is expected to add a new on campus football stadium, and housing for 3000 more students. There is also talk of a new building for the law school, and several new research buildings. It should very interesting. The campus already looks amazing and will only get better when all the buildings in the new plan are completed. I will try to post the new plan when it is released.

I'm hoping to transfer from Purdue to Northeastern in the Fall (2005) and I was wondering if anyone on this board transfered to NU from another school. If so, I'd appreciate ANY advice ANY of you can give me on ANY aspect of being a transfer student at this school.

Can anyone give a guess at my chances to transfer from Rockland Community College to NU??
My GPA is 3.68
I am Sophomore Senator, a member of Student Activities Board, work Part-time.
In HS my GPA was low--only 3.0 and mt SATs were also very low--1050, but i was pretty involved: Spring Track, French Club, Interact Club, Youth Group at church and worked part-time.
I've visited NU's campus recently and LOVED it. Im really hoping to get in for the fall semester next year.
Let me know what you think, Thanx!

Hi Jenn07,
Your College GPA is good but your SAT score may hurt you. Your chances of admission will largely depend on which college you are applying to.
In terms of admission competitivness I would rank the programs at Northeastern as follows:
1. Honors College (covers all majors)
2. Computer Science
3. Engineering
4. Business (except the BISB program which is ultra competitive)
5. Health Sciences
6. Arts & Sciences (except for some of the science fields, and architecture which are quite competitive)
7. Criminal Justice
8. General Studies (only available to frosh).
Which program are you applying to? Also what did you like about the campus?

You may be right. But check with the admissions office.

Fortune Magazine just published its list of the "Richest American." Richard Egan, who is a Northeastern graduate, is on the list with a net worth of $1.1 billion. He is the cofounder of EMC Corp which is the #1 Computer Storage Company in the world.
From Forbes:
http://www.forbes.com/finance/lists/54/2004/LIR.jhtml?passListId=54&passYear=2004&passListType=Person&uniqueId=O2YL&datatype=Person
Egan is a member of Northeastern's Board of Trustees and has given millions of dollars to the engineering school.

Is it safe to say that northeasterns professors and students maintain close academic relationships?
Smaller than adverage classes for a university of its size?
By Alan5 (Alan5) on Thursday, September 30, 2004 - 07:04 pm: Edit
Hi Sadtoknow,
Generally speaking, most of Northeastern's faculty make themselves available to students and the majority of professors are quite friendly. Some will even invite students out for lunch at the Faculty Club.
A word of advice: get to know your co-op advisor really well and he/she will get you the choice positions with the highest pay. The most prestigious co-ops (depending on major) are as follows: Microsoft, Sun, BBC News, White House, John Hancock, NASA, U.S. State Department, Merrill Lynch, Fidelity, EMC, Raytheon, Mass General Hospital, NBC, Reebok, New England Patriots, Boston Red Sox, Boston Celtics, U.S. Dept. of Homeland Security, Mass State House, U.S. Congress.
To answer your question about class sizes, Northeastern has about 14,000 undergrads which may seem large, but keep in mind that only half of the upperclassmen are taking classes in a semester. The other half are co-oping which makes for much smaller class sizes in the upper years (note: most of the students who are co-oping in Boston still live in the dorms which means you will still see them around campus at night and on weekends). First year classes tend to be a little larger though, but usually not more than 30-40 students which is still fairly small. Honors courses tend of have no more than 10-15 students in class. By the way, Northeastern is in the process of hiring 100 new tenure and tenure track faculty over the next few years. The first 33 professors joined the faculty this fall. All obtained PhDs from top graduate schools. The new hires will make the class sizes even smaller.

Alan, sorry it took so long to get back to you...I've been so busy. Thanks for the help though. I'm applying to the college of arts and sciences to major in Psychology. I LOVED the campus!!! It had everything right there and it wasn't in a bad part of the city. Very clean, the people were really nice, and the facilities were amazing compared to what else i've seen.
Hopefully I'll get in....

Does anybody know if applying "undecided" for a major increases or decreases your chances for acceptance and financial aide?

...I am not sure if my first post is shown because it is not being shown on my screen, so I will try it again...
Hey, I am a junior in highschool from New Jersey. I am looking into Northeastern, and I was wondering how selective admissions was when choosing students for their physical therapy program? Also, when I take the SATs, could you please tell me a score I should aim for that would be a good score for applying to a school for physical therapy. Thanks.
