i am thinking about applying to U of S. For the heck of it I might.
I have crappy stats:
SAT 1=1100
SAT 2=Writing 580, Math 1C 540, US His 560
ACT=24
GPA=3.4 weighted (i have taken 5 honors, 2ap, and will take 2 more ap and one more honors)
i am a white catholic, no legacy
But what will hopefully pull me over is my EC's and recs:
Eagle Scout
Pres of German Club
have my own internet radio show
Ass. Lighting Manager for plays
Peer Jury (we sentence juveys who committed minor offenses)MODERATOR
Pres of YOUTHNET 16 of Chicago
On the City-Wide Youth Council
in the SAM program (stopping alcohol to minors which i try to buy beer in a store for undercover cops)
I am a academic mentor at school
{there are a few more i cant think of}
plus i go to a prestigious Catholic prep school in IL
and all the teachers love me
Can i get in? What do u think?

As far as I can tell, he's actually trying to get liquor vendors in trouble, not other kids. Of course, the intended effect of his work is that more minors will be carded, but I don't think being denied liquor at the local QuikTrip is really a form of "getting in trouble".

"plus i go to a prestigious Catholic prep school in IL"
- SAT 1=1100 -
Obviously this "prestigious prep school" is not very prestigious at all.

Narc'ing on underage drinking will earn you few friends at Sewanee. They drink like fish up there -- not that I'm passing any sort of judgment on that.
I'd say you stand a good shot of getting in - their acceptance rate's around 60%s and your ECs are good, but don't hold me to it.

Not sure if you have visited Sewanee; it is absolutely beautiful. I am a distance alum, and was very impressed by the faculty and their commitment to the students. There are no TA's and a tremendous amount of individual attention by profs is available for those who seek it. I remember staying at Sewanee during my first Thanksgiving break. The Dean of students found out I was still there and invited me to eat Thanksgiving dinner there! Also, my folks attended Swarthmore, but my F stated that in his grad prgram in theology, the people who knew the most had gone to Sewanee.

My daughter and I visited Sewanee in June, and agree that the campus is lovely. The new dining hall is quite breathtaking. She likes all the traditions there - even the informal dress code. She'll definitely go back for an overnight visit.

My daughter was very interested in this school, so we recently requested the Sewanee DVD. We both agree the place is absolutely beautiful, but it appears boring. We plan to visit personally before making any final decisions. Have any of you viewed the VHS/DVD and then visited? I would appreciate any input. Thanks!

I think the level of involvement in extra-curriculars and the sort of interests your D has will be crucial in determining if she'll be bored. Some folks really crave the city lights, and they are about 60-90 miles away, depending upon which direction you go. However, folks who like hiking, community service, singing in choirs, theatrical performances, intermural or Division III athletics, rarely get bored. The campus is 10,000 acres, so natural beauty is a key draw for Sewanee.

Sorry, intramural.

Thanks, Momofthree. Sewanee sounds like a beautiful place and I understand it is a fabulous school. I do think we should absolutely visit the campus and speak with faculty, staff and students. Have a great weekend!

Splashmom, thanks!
I am glad you will visit. Fall is especially spectacular. I fell in love with the school on my first visit, applied early decision, and have never regretted it. The school is acknowledged for excellence in many areas, especially English, and has a great reputation among law and medical schools. I am sure you have also heard that Sewanee has had a large number of students over the years receive Rhodes Scholarships. A student won one last year, in fact. Hope you are able to stay a while, visit classes, and experience the wonderful hospitality!

I visited Sewanee after seeing both the Sewanee DVD and the Collegiate Choice video. It is a beautiful campus with a lot of nature around (10,000 acres!), but neither shows just how isolated Sewanee is. There are pros and cons to this - being so isolated provides fewer distractions but also provides fewer opportunities for jobs, entertainment, etc. It has an excellent faculty and many interesting traditions, and my daughter is definitely interested. If your daughter likes Sewanee but prefers a less isolated location, check out Rhodes in Memphis - they are very similar.
