Does anyone have any good insight to this school? I have heard that they give a lot of money for merit. Please give some info.

Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. (rated #37, but not one of those big top schools) yeah so its low on my list because i want to get away from this place, but it is honestly a great university.
many of the top students at my school have turned down harvard, yale, duke ,etc to go here. besides for the not-so-great location, and the not-too-impressive (pretty) campus, case has some of the best programs in the country, ranked in the top 10 for pediatrics, nursing, many careers in the medical field, and rated just below Johns Hopkins for biomedical engineering.
it offers GREAT merit scholarships. 10 people in the country are offered full tuitions, full room and board, full "personal costs", and are also PAID monthly to attend. a person with 1500+ on the SAT's automatically full tuition except $1000. its a school that is currently trying to attract a lot of the top students into their top-notch programs through irresistible merit scholarships. i believe there is a 75% merit scholarship for tuition with a 1400+ SAT score. it's an extremely WELL FUNDED school and it definitely shows through their huge amounds of aid.
some of the people there are as bright as the kids who attend harvard, yale. the opportunities in cleveland are amazing-socially, educationally.
kids are attracted to that place like a magnet because of thier awesome science programs and great financial aid! lots of "free rides!" who could resist?

How is Case Western's computer science program. Are they highly regarded in this field?

anything math/science/computer-ish at CWRU is GREAT

Hmm, I got into this place w/ a lovely $22K renewable scholarship... so i hope it's good. Need to visit though. "not-so-great" location? Why, is Cleveland a crappy city?? Ugh, i suppose i should see for myself.

Hi. I applied to Case, and they told me I'm getting my admissions letter within a week. What I wanna know is, those 10 people who get that incredible all expense paid ride, do they have to be from in state? and how bad is bad for the campus? is it safe? i live in the northeast and i confess i need to learn more about it. also, is there a chance they'll pay for travel expenses for me to visit? my parents have issues with me flying out there when i'm not even sure i'm going.
By Soundasleep (Soundasleep) on Friday, January 02, 2004 - 06:22 pm: Edit
i've applied early action and their application says that they should have it out by early jan. however when i emailed them they said they have not reviewed my app yet. umm.. anyone else with this problem?
By Constellation35 (Constellation35) on Friday, January 02, 2004 - 07:25 pm: Edit
from what i've heard, DO NOT GO HERE. the work is as hard as the work at top 5 schools, and it's not well-known at all so it will hurt you when you try to get jobs.
ironically the people on www.studentsreview.com said the same thing.
By Scarletgirl (Scarletgirl) on Wednesday, January 07, 2004 - 12:36 am: Edit
Hey Soundasleep, i've been having similar problems with them. I had to fight to be considered early action bc of some screw up and I still haven't gotten the letter they supposedly dropped in the mail last week. Ick. I think I'll call them tomorrow. Or should I say, today.
By Soundasleep (Soundasleep) on Wednesday, January 07, 2004 - 04:46 pm: Edit
hey scarletgirl. i gave them another email and they replied saying i have everything. unless it's to distract me so i won't keep bothering them, hehe. but i guess i can sit back and relax now.

When did you send in the application?
By Wheatthin (Wheatthin) on Friday, January 16, 2004 - 05:49 pm: Edit
Does Case have EA admissions? I checked the application and their web page and they only mention ED. I sent my app in early December and haven't heard anything yet. I am sure I will be admitted because my SAT's are above the 75th% and my rank, gpa and ec's are good.
I would like to hear soon because I have been accepted to RPI and have $72K scholarships already.

hey, im' really happy that i got into case. but now i'm a little scared. everyone's saying how this college is unsafe and you should never go alone after dark because of all the robberies and such going on. any thoughts on this and what everyone else says about gloomy cleveland weather and the such? and the car deal - that you NEED a car to get to places?
By Bharath2007 (Bharath2007) on Tuesday, January 20, 2004 - 08:04 pm: Edit
It is very safe, but you should not walk out at night anywhere around 2 in the morning that is just common sense. I don't understand how people are saying it is SO unsafe, becuase 1st of all, the campus is very compact. 2nd of all your cross busy streets that are well lit, 3rd the campus is inside university circle, containing only museums, concert halls, restaurants, hospitals, this is the least likely place to get shot. Personally I think our school mirrors Northwestern, in that we are not really in a big city but very close to it. Although we are in Cleveland, we are in the cultural area which is far from like the real (gritty) city. A care would help getting to places on weekends, but to get to class and to do normal things, it would probably be a major hindrance. I love it here. It is really what you make of it, which can be said for any college. Also with one of the above posts, the science/engineering here are hard, but everything else is pretty easy. So non science premeds are in luck.

Thanks NHfrenchie-you inspired me to call the Case admissions office. Apparently there is an additional form for EA that needs to be sent if using the Common Application. Like many others, I didnt do that. Anywoo, the woman I spoke to told me that my decision had been sent out the day before and should be here in a few days.
I am reasonably confident that I will be accepted. Its the scholarship offer that I am anxious about. From other posts here, it seems that merit award should be in the package just sent.My dad says that, even though our family income isn't so high, our EFC(?) is over $50k because of savings and investments.

Scarletgirl-I go the thin letter today! Fortunately it had AdmitOne printed in bold letters! I was real happy to be offered a Trustees Scholarship like you did!
Did you visit Case? I went last spring and liked my few hours there. The student guide was a kinda dorky ME, but nice and down to earth guy. I went into Olin Hall(CompSci) before the group session and two profs introduced themselves to me an the 'rents. They seemed glad to answer our questions which was great.
The campus and University Circle area seemed safe enough but we didn't go to far afield from there. Safety isnt a big issue with me because me and my friend go into NYC fairly regularly and I am comfortable in cities. Ya just can't be stupid.
Come April I will have some decisions to make. It will probably come down to a difficult choice between Case, Rensselaer and Oberlin. Liked en all.
By Scarletgirl (Scarletgirl) on Saturday, January 24, 2004 - 06:12 pm: Edit
I didn't visit the campus. I came across the school through research and the rec of my vp. To tell you the truth, it's one of my safety schools. But my reach schools might very well not give me enough financial aid, so I could end up going there. I'm thinking about visiting this coming month, but not on the designatted sleepover days. And that whole thin letter thing is kind of mean! Also, when do you think we get the big package?
By Wheatthin (Wheatthin) on Sunday, January 25, 2004 - 02:12 am: Edit
I dunno when we'll get more info. Almost all the 1st year dorms are identical so it doesnt seem to matter much if you decide early or late. They are a bit of a trek(5-10 mins) to the Case Quad but I think there is a shuttle that would be nice during bad weather.
If you are expecting need-based aid, you should do okay with your reach schools. It seems that the more selective universities typically offer better need based aid. I'm not expecting any need based aid, so merit awards are important to me. Here is the deal with me and my parents. They will pay any R&B charges+books+health related fees. I will pay tuition+other fees+spending $'s. I have a $76K college fund but would like to have some $'s for grad school. I'd guess that I have a 40% chance of ending up at Case. I am very laid back and I felt that I would be happy at the 5 of the schools I visited. The only one I didnt like was Penn State-way too big for me.
By Scarletgirl (Scarletgirl) on Sunday, January 25, 2004 - 05:57 pm: Edit
Well, I expect financial aid, but I'm middle class, and middle class people are worse off than the very poor and the very wealthy. We will have to see how things go. And I am going to medical school, which can be as much as $58,000 a year, so I really do need money.

I don't think so. Tis a long drive and I did visit last spring. If I do decide to partake, it will probably be the April 19&20th with maybe a revisit to Oberlin the day before if I get in and it seems possible to attend.

For these scholarships, is it awarded solely for you SAT score, or is GPA also factor in? From the way it sounds is that you just have to be an admitted student with and SAT of such and such.

Spydersport, I don't know the answer to your question because my gpa lines up fairly well with my SAT score. One thing I can tell you is that SAT II's are recommended but I did not take any. I was also told during an on-campus info session that failurre to take or submit SAT II's would have no impact on admit or scholarship decisions.
BTW, I made a boo boo. I got offered a President's Scholarship@ $17K not a Trustees@$22K.

ok thanks, does anyone have the answer?
By Kjofkw (Kjofkw) on Sunday, February 15, 2004 - 08:57 am: Edit
I called CASE some time ago, and asked an admissions counselor about the "automatic" scholarship w/ 1500+ SAT. He said that it "qualified" you for the Trustee, but that the regional rep had to also recommend you based on other things. I also asked how many applied, were eligable, and actually received the Trustee, but he did not give me a direct answer.

Also, Wheattin, can you post your stats and EC's plz?
By Wheatthin (Wheatthin) on Sunday, February 15, 2004 - 08:57 pm: Edit
Well Pianoman here goes. SAT V-690 SAT M-730(one test), rank-top 5%, wgpa-96.5, 6 AP's(CompSci AB, Statistics, US History, Euro History, Calc AB and Physics)Mostly honors and AP except English and foreign language(only 2 years)
Academic stuff-Rensselaer Medal, state Scholar award, JHU CTY, NMS Commendation, and various honor societies.
EC's-fencing team(3 years), lots of school music groups(but no region/state select groups), my own band, church mission projects, RC Certified Life Guard, a few church leadership things. No school clubs or SGA offices.
I did visit Case in junior year but did not have an interview because they do not interview juniors.
By Sunshine916 (Sunshine916) on Monday, February 16, 2004 - 07:18 pm: Edit
they completely changed their scholarship awarding system this year. i dont know what happened...
By Pianoman (Pianoman) on Monday, February 16, 2004 - 08:40 pm: Edit
Sunshine, is it now harder to get a merit scholarship at Case, or are they just basically trying to allow for personal qualities to be given consideration for merit scholarships instead of just plain scores? I hope it's not harder now!
By Scarletgirl (Scarletgirl) on Monday, February 16, 2004 - 10:41 pm: Edit
Spydersport, I don't think that person knew exactly what they were talking about bc not all the scholarship info was accurate. I got the trustee's scholarship, which is the highest possible, and i still have about $3000 left of tuition. and i have a 1570 on my sats with credentials to match. i think they take your entire app into account in awarding scholarships. nothing is "guaranteed."
By Spydersport824 (Spydersport824) on Tuesday, February 17, 2004 - 09:50 am: Edit
that seems more realistic, Scarletgirl. Congratulations on your trustee's as well.

Let's say I was to apply to Case right now (I'm only a sophomore right now), how good would my chances be for a Trustee's Scholarship?
ACT: 35
Class Rank: 2/512 (high school ranked in top 4% of all high school in nation)
GPA: UW:4.0, W: 5.4 Taking 4 AP's this year, 6 AP's next year.
EC's: Serious classical piano for 10 years; I have placed in a few competitions here and there and won some scholarships, and I play very well and I could send a CD to prove it if I should.
Co-host of a radio show with over 200,000 listners, and have made a big impact all over the state in talking about stuff like gangs and politics (interviewed Dick Gephardt).
Captain of Science Team, Winner of a few first place medals.
All the usual Beta Club and Key Club Crap at school, National Spanish Honor Society, Founder and President of Medical Club, Hospital Volunteering in Summer, Blah Blah.
By Sunshine916 (Sunshine916) on Tuesday, February 17, 2004 - 07:40 pm: Edit
ummm wow yeah you'd get it.
i dont know how they changed scholarship awards thsi year. there are no "cutoffs" though, but i think they are leaning more heavily towards personal qualities.
see i KNOW before that a 1500+, top 10% = Trustees Scholarship. 2 people i know called the admissions office, and the people on the phone guaranteed it to them as long as they met the two above credentials. this was last year though. things have changed.
tuition has also taken a (fairly large) climb this year.
pianoman, you are more qualified than me, and i got the Trustees Scholarship.

I got my acceptance yesterday from Case. I'm somewhat disappointed though, because there was no mention of a scholarship in the letter, and I was really expecting one. I'm afraid that it was because I didn't get everything in until February 6th because of a mixup at my school. Oh well, I guess.
By Chen (Chen) on Monday, March 08, 2004 - 02:05 pm: Edit
That's better than me, Holden...Case was my second safety school, and I was WAITLISTED! They named it an alternate list, but I was waitlisted...ack. I know it's my Cs junior year, but it was my safety school! It did say that it received a record number of apps this year, but ah, my safety did this to me. I was even expecting maybe a small scholarship considering that's the impression you guys gave off :/ And I'm surprised, Holdensqueal, being that you have a 1560 (did a search) and high SAT IIs AND a high GPA (but you were accepted at other places with higher honors on time, so you're fine)! What happened....ah.
By Chimmortal (Chimmortal) on Monday, March 08, 2004 - 08:16 pm: Edit

im..errr...kind of surprised.
record numbers this year? but STILL.
Holdenesquealex. with those stats, you should have easily gotten in WITH a good merit scholarship. a lot of the EA kids i know who got in had stats infinitely worse than yours.
Chen...WAITLISTED? okay, what WERE your stats?
Chimmortal-the Provost/Presidential/Trustee's scholarship notification should have come with your acceptance letter.
okay, were your acceptance letters in a huge envelope with a bunch of extra material or were they in a small envelope basically with 2-3 sheet of paper? because i got the large envelepe w/viewbook and Experience Case days and such the other day.
maybe your scholarship are coming? there are more available that arent announced yet.
ugh dont give up guys. stupid Case.
By Kevin143 (Kevin143) on Monday, March 08, 2004 - 08:58 pm: Edit
I got mine in a small envelope with two sheets of paper. Just a rather nice acceptance letter and another sheet about creating a Case network ID.
I was expecting to get some scholarship, with a 1440 SATI and a 3.8UW QPA. Maybe it'll come later, but I'll almost be glad if it doesn't, because it might convince me to take out the loans and attend a better school.
By Chen (Chen) on Monday, March 08, 2004 - 08:59 pm: Edit
haha, waitlist, never heard of that from case, eh?
well, I was building myself up for an acceptance because of the 74% admit rate in 2003 and the lower of the top 50 ranking. my stats aren't too impressive, but i didn't think case was either! :D
1420 SAT I
low GPA. some Cs junior year. mostly Bs and some As in general. took a harder courseload than almost everyone else.
700 writing
690 math ic
660 bio
640 chem
620 math ic
eh, Kevin143, I'm surprised for you, too. Case must be crackin down!

My Trip to Case (abridged, have a lot of math to do)..
I stayed there Thurs/Fri two weekends ago.. and it definitely had an interesting feel to it: strained and relaxed at the same time. There's no denying that EVERYONE WORKS HARD, but because EVERYONE works hard, everyone seems to be cool with it (except around exam time). The interesting thing is that they are not really competitive with each other; just with themselves. LOTS of math/sci.. lots of biomedical engineering kids I met. Apparently there aren't a lot of hot guys.. but the ones I met were genuinely nice guys, and that was cool.
Enough school pride despite the work. Kinda hardcore nerdy, but hey, I felt comfortable there
I can see myself there!!
By Holdenesquealex (Holdenesquealex) on Monday, March 08, 2004 - 10:22 pm: Edit
My acceptance just came in a thin envelope with two sheets of paper. I kind of applied to Case at the last minute (obviously), but it has really risen on my charts recently. The director of their orchestra was a clinician at a thing I went to, and I was impressed by her, and encouraged that the orchestra there is mainly non-music majors. Plus, I really enjoy Cleveland, and it's a convenient distance away from here. Maybe I'll hope for the scholarship to come later, but there's no way I can go there without a scholarship.
By Chimmortal (Chimmortal) on Monday, March 08, 2004 - 11:40 pm: Edit
My acceptance also came in a thin envelope with two sheets of paper. I was expecting at least a minor scholarship since I have a 1580 SAT, 4.0 GPA(no APs/honors at my school though), and am from an extremely underrepresented area(rural South Dakota). My essay wasn't very good though...
Also, did any of you check your financial aid awards online? Mine was still at Step 3 and said I needed to contact the finaid office. I'm going to call them tomorrow, but is it possible that they just haven't gotten around to an award yet? Or maybe they're going to award me a full scholarship so they don't have to give me a financial aid award haha.

The Provost scholarship is only $12000/year and the total expenses is $37170, you can get need based financial aids if your EFC is 0.

I called up Case, and they said applications have increased by 1,000. I got the impression that their waiting list is growing, so decisions are still being made. Since I got my decision Monday as did Brianktm, I assume we were on the borderline?
actually, scratch that theory. brianktm's stats are way too high to be borderline (did a search -- look at my nifty detective skills!)

HOLY GEEZ.
i think they got only around 1500 apps last year. they accepted around 1100, and around 500 enrolled. that means their acceptance rate is only 44% this year!!!
i cant belive Chimmortal didnt get a merit scholarship. oh my goodness. your academics are perfect and you are from SD. how were your EC's? this is so shocking/strange. i think this year was just really really crazy for Case.
for those of you who are accepted, you will get a huge package full of Case brochures/viewbooks and info on Experience Case Days.
so far, everyone i know has gotten notification of their Provost/Presidential/Trustees scholarship in the little envelope. however, there are more that havent been announced yet.
i think what may have happened this year is that they gave too many scholarships out in the EA round and didnt realize that the applicant pool would jump so much in the RD round. a lot of people i know who dont look nearly as good as some of you got in EA with worse stats, and, in many cases, a Provost or Presidential scholarship.
aghhhhhh, for those on the alternates list-dont give up.
madameinsanity! ahhh isnt case such a nerdy school? the people there are so crazy. all a bunch of engineering/math/science freaks. its like a mini-MIT sort of thing. i'm doing an overnight on April 7th (i think?) during one the Experience Case days. i live nearby though. biomedical engineering is quite popular there. its also my major.

I applied early action and received my acceptance on Jan. 20th together with the notification of the $17k President's Scholarship in the acceptance letter. I have a feeling that my SAT score of 1420 and so-so essay would not had gotten me that scholarship had I applied RD. Thank God for the free CommonApp and a GC who prodded me to get my six applications in before Thanksgiving.

I'm in with a Treuhaft's scholarship for full tuition! This is my safety school, so if everything else doesn't work out, at least I'll be going somewhere.
Here's my stats:
Female, black
800 math, 750 verbal
790 IIC, 750 writing, 680 bio
Decent APs (4s and 5s)
NASA SHARP research
Engineering major
A few smaller national awards
Lots of ECs
Good essays and recs (I guess)

Grats La2p!
Sunshine916, my ECs were very good (at least for my area). Captain of two sports, president of two organizations, and all-state in football. I could've gotten recruited for football by smaller D2 schools if I wasn't injury prone.
Like I said, my essay was probably mediocre but not horrible. Maybe they're trying to not award scholarships to people that they think are just using them as a safety? Or maybe I'm overestimating my desirability to schools.

I found out why I was rejected for a scholarship: class rank.
I am around 13%, not 10%, so I got nothing. That's life.
By Sunshine916 (Sunshine916) on Sunday, March 14, 2004 - 09:24 pm: Edit
i talked to the admissions office.
they ran out of money early, before they could give everyone the scholarship they deserved!
admissions office right now is mass chaos. a HUGE overload in apps this year.
only 20% of acceptees got merit scholarships. dont worry about it guys

I was accepted last week with a Smith-Treuhaft Full Tuition Scholarship in addition to Pre-professional Scholars Program in Medicine (PPSP-Med) finalist standing. I'll be attending the activities on Case's campus on April 2nd.
Sunshine, where are you getting all this information? How do you know that only 20% got merit scholarships? They said in their viewbook that around 40% recieved "some sort of merit aid."
La2p, on Case's website, it says that only two people in the entire admitted freshman class recieved the Smith-Treuhaft scholarship. I think it's pretty coincidental/cool that we both posted on this particular page. Will you be attending Case's activities on the weekend of 4/2? A total of 13 freshmen recieved full-tuition scholarships.
To everyone that did not recieve merit aid due to class rank, I find that extremely strange, because I definitely am not top 10% of my class. In fact, when I was accepted EA, I only recieved the presidential scholarship of 17 k, and then a big package came two weeks ago with the full-tuition Smith-Treuhaft deal. Wherever you're recieving that information, I'm finding inaccurate. I don't think they base their merit aid on class rank.
Has anyone on this board from the class of 2007 experienced the medical interview? Anyone care to discuss personal experiences with this school? I'm seriously considering attending Case.

where did i get the information about 20% recieving merit based aid?
i spoke with an admissions officer a week and a half ago.
then a Case student called me (she works in admissios) and we had a nice little chat.
then my parents went to meet with the finaid office yesterday, for some changes in our current financial situation.
they had a huge increase in apps this year-1000 more than last year. less merit scholarships apparently were awarded too.
i'll also be attending Case activities on April 2nd-the Ohio Leadership Scholarship interview and activities.
Case is still a huge contender right now, because of the 22k/yr merit aid. their merit aid USED to be based on class rank and SAT's alone, but they reformatted it just this year to give more leeway and have it less focused on quantitative factors.
i got a likely letter from Cornell Engineering the other day (YAY! my top choice!), but was waitlisted at MIT yesterday (ehhh, thats okay.).
good luck to everyone.

Sunshine, where did you hear this information about the 10 people getting full expense-paid rides? I've never heard this, and it's not on the website either.
Congratulations on your Trustee's scholarship and acceptance.

Just read the following on the Case website. It was not very promising. In fact it sounds very discouraging. Anyone know about this at Case?
"Do undergraduates have much faculty contact?
All EECS faculty teach classes and regularly interact with undergraduates; however, outside of the ENGR 131 Introduction to Programming class freshman do not have much interaction with the EECS Department's faculty unless they are taking an advanced class. In addition to regular faculty we do use teaching assistants to handle recitation sections and laboratory sections for many classes. Finally we have several classes taught by Adjunct Faculty who have special expertise."

i dont know about the 10 people with full expenses. my parents INSIST that there are, because my mom works with someone whose husband is on Case's admissions board. also, one of their friends said their son was offered this scholarship. i still insist its a lie though...oh well?
as for their undergrad classes, a lot of people from my HS wind up at case, and nobody has ever complained about huge lectures or too many TA's, so i can only assume it isnt a huge program. however, CWRU has a LOT of grad students. i dont know...

There's definitely no such thing as the all expenses paid scholarship. There are however, full tuition scholarships.

Revamped admissions process draws record number of applicants
Greg Hanneman
News Editor
About 5500 prospective students have applied to become part of the Case class of 2008 so far this year, topping the 5000 mark for the first time ever. Applications are up 13 percent over last year, and have reached the largest pool in school history. The number of applicants from outside Ohio has also increased by 17 percent.
Admissions officials are crediting this new-found interest in the school to changes in the application process and increased recruitment efforts.
Chris Munoz, the university’s vice provost for undergraduate enrollment, thought that the key to increasing Case’s application pool was the new admissions website at http://admission.case.edu. The site allows prospective students to personalize the website and receive content tailored to the preferences they express. Visitors can even apply to Case directly from the site. Once a student begins the online application process, his or her high school counselors can check up on its progress.
“We have had a significant number of students who have applied online,” Munoz said.
The new site was launched in September after being developed in two months. The former site that it replaced, according to Munoz, didn’t provide Web-based services tailored to each visitor’s interests. He said the new website – specifically its underlying database – is the “essential engine” to providing an enhanced Web presence to prospective students.
Bob McCullough, the associate director of Admissions, highlighted other changes in the admissions process for this year. He said that the office implemented an “early action” plan to get responses out to applicants sooner. Instead of mailing out acceptance letters in March, as was done previously, letters this year were sent out on a rolling basis. Students who applied to Case early in the school year, McCullough said, received their admissions letters around Jan. 1.
McCullough also cited increased communication between Admissions and other offices as another of this year’s improvements.
“A lot of the community has supported our efforts,” he said. “We’re also continuing to improve our ability to get the message out there.” New tour guide training, a student ambassador program, and various Case open houses have also helped get current students involved in recruiting the next freshman class.
The new website and new programs are just parts of the new approach to the application process that Admissions is taking this year, whose goals include increasing the applicant pool, broadening it to a more diverse range of students and geographic locations, and increasing Case’s name recognition through branding.
“[We’re] trying to understand how students view the college selection process and how they view Case,” said Munoz. “In the market approach you try to understand what the expectations of students are.”
As the administration researches what prospective students are looking for in a college or university, it develops programs like SAGES to try to exceed those expectations, Munoz said. He also called current student satisfaction and pride in Case “critical” to improving the university.
“We as administrators and faculty have to work very hard to access the quality of work that we do,” he said. “That’s what I think we’re on the road to accomplishing.”
Munoz said that the university is embarking on a five-year effort to continue increasing the number of applicants, but plans to keep the size of the admitted classes roughly constant. This will gradually increase Case’s selectivity, which Munoz said was around 75 percent for the Class of 2007. He estimated the percentage for the Class of 2008 will end up around 66 or 67 percent. As a result, around 500 applicants were wait-listed this year.
“That’s a relatively new experience at Case,” Munoz said.
McCullough said that it is still too early in the year to report on the exact size and make-up of next year’s freshman class. Admissions is aiming for a target size of 825 or 850 students, but so far only 85 have confirmed their arrival here next fall, he said.
“The future and vitality of Case depends on this whole [admissions] process,” McCullough said.

By Chen (Chen) on Wednesday, March 31, 2004 - 03:49 pm: Edit
Thanks for posting the article. I'm really glad they're so open with their statistics! That's pretty cool to know I'm one of 500, too. That's around twice as much as they had last year, so my chances aren't totally destroyed. So how many were admitted ED this year?
Oh, and juniors, if you have low grades or SAT scores, if you have good ECs, Case will probably still want you. It's ranked second as the most imp admissions aspect behind school record.

Where should I go for Biology/Pre-med?
University of Pittsburgh
Case Western Reserve U
Boston College
Please justify your answer with facts, not just with school pride and stuff like that.
By Myway (Myway) on Friday, April 02, 2004 - 07:53 am: Edit
I don't know about the others except for Case. But some reasons to go to Case is that it has a very prestigious med school, and I'm sure their preprofessional scholars program is great preparation. And even if you aren't in this program, they still give advising to anyone who wants it.
In addition, to a prestigious undergrad degree at Case, it's also surrounded by some of the best hospitals/clinics. The experience you'd get would definitely be valuable and impressive.
That's my vote for Case. I don't know about the other two.
By Nhfrenchie (Nhfrenchie) on Friday, April 02, 2004 - 10:49 am: Edit
All 3 of those schools will offer you a solid program in pre-med/biology. All 3 are also very different environments. Frankly, I would concentrate on basing your decision in that area.
Case is in Cleveland (not necessarily a college town like Boston or Pittsburgh) Undergraduate population is under 4000. Graduate population is greater in population than undergraduate. Case undergraduates (not from Cleveland) are required to live on campus for 4 years. You will get a very personal education at Case and it will be demanding. I believe they are a "work hard and play hard" type of school. Greek life is fairly large there.
Pitt is a large public University with a private school like education. Again, you will get a solid education. It is a larger, more urban than Case type university. I don't believe that you will receive a "personal" an education there as Case. Also, because it is a public University, you will have a more "varied" student population than both Case and BC.
BC is located in a suburb of Boston city proper. A very popular choice and more difficult to get accepted. It does offer strong LA education. My impression is that if you are into sports action, like to have fun, social type person, this choice would make sense. They offer as much "green" space as Case and definitely more than PITT. I don't think that you'll get a "personal" touch as much as you would at Case but more than you would at PITT.
Ultimately, it's what will fit you best....
Good luck!

Has anyone read some of the epinions.com regarding Case? VERY depressing! Case was actually one of my son's top choices, because we felt it was a good school, for a reasonable price (due to scholarship money), and great reputation in the sciences across the board.
However, the comments centered on the depressing work-centered atmosphere. When he visited, it seemed okay, but the students laughed that on weekends you can sometimes find "a" party.
It all sounds so bleak! (and makes me very nervous). Any comments?

F-D is a wonderful school.......
A student was shot and at least six other people were slashed or bludgeoned early yesterday when a fight escalated into a free-swinging melee involving dozens of people at a student-center dance on the Madison, N.J., campus of Fairleigh Dickinson University, law enforcement and school officials said.
Four victims were stabbed or cut, one was hit with a bottle and another was struck with a bench as about 30 combatants squared off on the dance floor with fists, knives and legs torn off chairs and tables, the authorities said. While the 300 to 400 bystanders scattered in panic, the fighting spilled out onto a campus quadrangle and a few overwhelmed security guards called the police

A CWRU graduate came back in May 2003 and caused a school shooting. I read that in one college guide. I'm not sure why we haven't heard more about it, but I don't think anyone died. If that happened, maybe one did and a few people were injured.

My D is a sophomore at Case and loves it. She works hard during the week but she also has alot of fun on the week-ends. She just was home for her first visit since Christmas because her week-ends are always busy. A large group went to Key West for spring break. She has no car but makes use of the train and buses to get to downtown or anywhere she needs to go. I would use caution to remarks made on the computer by students who prefer to stay in their dorm room and hibernate and look at the students who are out having a good time. Read the college newspaper, see what events are being offered. I remember last year Louis Black from The Daily Show was on campus. The Vice Presidential debate will be held there in the fall. Use more than one source to make your own opinons. Good Luck.

Hi. I'm an admitted senior hoping to major in bio or neuroscience and am debating between Case or Vassar College. I think that at Case I would probably get a better science background than at Vassar however when I visited Case the campus was kind of drab and depressing and the students all seemed to be really serious and blah, not many smiles. I was wondering therefore if anyone can shed some light on what the atmosphere is like at Case. Thanks a lot for your input.
