humm... i am also looking into SUNY schools, and on the top of my list is SUNY Binghamton. I would love people's opinions on this college.

By Feath17 (Feath17) on Saturday, December 06, 2003 - 06:19 pm: Edit

I heard bad things about this school (such as it's dark and dingy, not much to do, and so on) but I decided to go check out the school myself. When I went it was totally different from what I expected. I expected to hate it but I didn't. I thought it was a pretty campus, small, but pretty and when I went, it was not dark and dingy. They talked about what there is to do on campus and it sounded like there was a lot to do. The school puts on stuff for students to do, there are game rooms, I'm sure there are parties, and I cannot remember what else. Also, I have heard that Binghamton is one of the most selective SUNYs making it on the top of the SUNY list for academics. I hope I helped out a little bit with this information.

By Noangel164 (Noangel164) on Saturday, December 06, 2003 - 09:48 pm: Edit

Thanks a bunch. In terms of SUNY schools, I like Binghamton, Albany, and Buffalo (although I'm not that much of a snow type of person, so i don't think i'll end up there. Plus I heard that Buffalo is a big party school, and i'm not that much of a party person- not to say i'm a nerd or anything- i just don't want to go to a big party school) and the state side of Cornell.

By Pinknari (Pinknari) on Monday, December 15, 2003 - 04:37 pm: Edit

Is it really selective at Binghamton?? I mean, my ACT is 26...and my gpa is 3.6 unweighted and I'm in the top 20% of our school...

I applied EA but is that enough??

By Acinommta (Acinommta) on Sunday, December 21, 2003 - 01:17 pm: Edit

I'm a junior in high school, and I'm doing research in SUNY Binghamton's Chemistry Dept now. The campus seems nice, the professors are friendly, and the science library has a very copious supply of books. Research isn't that bad: over the summer I checked out the physics department and they were studying the microstructure of aloys and the conditions under which microscopic rods and plates form.

As far as academics are concerned, SUNY Binghamton is excellent. My dad took a couple prerequisite courses after college there, and after that he went to grad school at Columbia University.

Does anyone know how they select "Binghamton Scholars" and when they actually inform selected students?

By Soulofheaven8 (Soulofheaven8) on Thursday, March 11, 2004 - 10:29 am: Edit

Yeah, I wanna know that too.

So far, the only thing I have been able to find out is that they take 80 of their top students. But as for how the 80 is selected, I don't know. Could be academics and/or academics + extracurriculars.

I think we both have decent credentials to qualify.

By Zero2029 (Zero2029) on Saturday, March 13, 2004 - 07:10 pm: Edit

I just got a letter today about the Scholars Program. I think they send it out to a bunch of people, and then make their final selections from whoever sends back the form.

By Soulofheaven8 (Soulofheaven8) on Sunday, March 14, 2004 - 07:13 pm: Edit

Got the University Scholar letter today too.

I wonder how many people get that letter.

By Synapse (Synapse) on Monday, March 15, 2004 - 12:56 am: Edit

Are they taking awhile to mail out my decision because I might be borderline?

By Marissa515 (Marissa515) on Monday, March 22, 2004 - 09:30 pm: Edit

hey.. does anyone know much about binghamton and how life is like there? I got into binghamton but it wasn't my first choice... but I am realizing most likely i will be going there. I'm just worried that it has that "depressing" feel ( cold,wet...) and not much to do.

By Marissa515 (Marissa515) on Tuesday, March 23, 2004 - 03:14 pm: Edit

I was just wondering if anyone knows anything about social life? I got in.. and as i am receiving college letters it seems it is very likely i will be attending binghamton in the fall. When i visited last year i liked it but it seemed like it could get a bit depressing (dark, cold, rainy) Also, does anyone know anything about their art department?

By Marissa515 (Marissa515) on Tuesday, March 23, 2004 - 03:15 pm: Edit

whoa... sorry guys, thought the other one did not post! :)

same situation/impressions here, except I didn't visit

By Wheatthin (Wheatthin) on Tuesday, March 23, 2004 - 04:30 pm: Edit

I live in the area so here's the deal. The campus itself is about 5 miles from the "city" of Binghamton in an area of strip malls and fast food restaurants. To get to any place off campus you will need a car. I'm not sure if Binghamton U has any shuttle bus service, not being a student there. There is little to do in Binghamton anyhow. The Arena will sometimes bring in name entertainers however typically no one I would care to see. Clubs? What clubs?

I can't honestly think of anywhere off-campus that would be compelling to a college student other than some bars scattered about the area. The radio stations suck bigtime too. The nearest city would be Syracuse about an hour away and Ithaca is about 45 minutes away.

About the only good thing I can say about the area is that there are lots of decent golf courses that are easy to get on and are relatively cheap. And the weather isn't as bad as some make it out to be.

I have to believe that the social life at Bingo revolves aroud on campus activities. If not, heaven help you.

By Grace226 (Grace226) on Sunday, March 28, 2004 - 05:28 pm: Edit

I'm really annoyed by Bing, they gave me no merit aid or grants whatsoever and my EFC was 807. This is a safety school too.All I got was tap and pell. They really expect me to pay 13,000 for their below par school. yeah,I'm just venting.

I constantly check my application status online and it says that my app was completed in January but I never recieved any notification regarding their decision. I'm just a little worried because they go by a rolling admission process and I'm scared that all the spots will be gone by the time they reach to my app.

By Synapse (Synapse) on Wednesday, March 31, 2004 - 05:43 pm: Edit

Did they get your mid year grades.. if your application isnt complete by now then most likely they have not received all the materials. I would call them up and ask them if they got everything and make sure they are reviewing your application. Their admissions number is 1-607-777-2171.. give them a call :)

bentmywookie25 on aim

By Lenk58 (Lenk58) on Tuesday, May 25, 2004 - 03:59 pm: Edit

Livings looks like you could have gone to many very good schools. Bing is the NYS flagship school and is good, but not greta in engineering, why Watson?

By Livings124 (Livings124) on Wednesday, May 26, 2004 - 02:45 pm: Edit

thanks

I got into some good schools, but not all bc my school has a lot of good people and a lot of people that exaggerated on their college apps, so competing for acceptance was hard. Also, I'm kinda lazy and the money was a big factor. At Carnegie Mellon they said that com sci majors sometimes are so pressured that they don't shower...i don't want to deal with stuff like that, lol. I figure I might as well just do well and save my money for graduate school. And watson is a pretty good school, it's not bad or anything.

Oh yeah, the scholar's program is really what made me chose it..it gives you a lot of good stuff that other schools wouldn't.
