I saw a book that had surveys of students at 20 top colleges. Northwestern and Chicago did the worst in a question that said something like, "would you go to a different school if you had the chance?" I think about a quarter of the NU students said they would go someplace else. Most other schools were under 20%, and a few like Princeton were under 10%. Chicago I can understand - it's supposed to be pretty intense academically, and the neighborhood is a bit dicey - but why would NU come in second worst?

I heard that Northwestern has a large gay population. Although i'm not 100% sure.

what would having a gay population have anything to do with unhappy students? That is the studidest thing to say.

One likely possibility: December to March -- very little sunshine (cloud cover most days), quite a bit of snow, temperature hovers between 0 and 20 majority of days, wind howls and makes it feel much colder. Those from the upper midwest are aware of it when they choose to go. Most others are shocked during their first year to learn at how bad it really is.

I've been to Chicago (and its northern neighbour, wisconsin) many times, and I am from New England, and they are certainly about equivalent - New England is more unpredictable and sudden, and more wet (and humid) - the weather in both places sucks, but this doesnt explain why it is more than schools in NE (or nearby) such as Dartmouth, Harvard, Brown, MIT, Yale, (to move away from NE) Columbia, Cornell, Princeton Penn etc etc etc

Hey, Gay people make the world a worse place right? Of course that is why it is unappy at northwestern.

Otoh, NU also is #1 on (student rated) best overall academic experience for undergrads, #20 on toughest to get into.

My best friend/almost boyfriend(wink wink) TURNED DOWN PRINCETON AND BROWN FOR NW!!! AGGH... not that its not a good school....AND HE SEEMS HAPPY WITH HIS DECISION...EVEN WANTED ME TO APPLY...anyway, heres my two cents...
THe classes are VERY rigorous, but i think anyone who gets accepted there can handle it. THe quarter grading system or whatever they have MAKES SURE they never stop studying for exams, etc. The social scene is good(when ppl stop studying) lol. Tons of ECs and stuff to keep ppl busy. As far as i can tell, the ppl are friendly and a tight knit bunch.
if u want my friend's stats...just email me or whatever!
