Anyone know what the GPA is required to attend this school? How about SAT scores?

any alumni??

It is a competitive school. Plan on at least a 3.5/1200 in-state and a 3.8/1300 out-of-state to be competitive, a lot like the University of Virginia. Neither of these would guarantee admission, but would give you at least some consideration for it.

William & Mary is a Top 10 Public School for getting into elite graduate schools, but the rate is 1/3rd that of UVa (and that's adjusted for the difference in size of the schools).

Breeze:

Too low. Both in-state and out-of-state need to be much higher to be admitted.

I know a valedictorian of a competitive Catholic high school who was not admitted.

Anyone get a postcard from an admin officer today about their essay?

By Gumbino (Gumbino) on Friday, February 27, 2004 - 12:46 pm: Edit

Clipper: What did the postcard you got say?

By Rockstar (Rockstar) on Friday, February 27, 2004 - 06:45 pm: Edit

I got one! It was handwritten and said the following:

"
[my name],
I thoroughly enjoyed reading your application, particularly the essay of [what my essay was about]. How cool! Have a wonderful senior year.

[name]
Assistant Dean of admissions
"

Is this a likely letter?? Getting that card was pretty coooool.

Hey I got a postcard too. It says the same basic thing... "I enjoyed reading your application" "I particularly enjoyed reading about [a club I founded]", "Well done on you application" etc. From assistant dean of admissions.

It's a likely I'm pretty sure. Why would they take the time to hand write these if they weren't going to accept us? I also think they send them out to kids who are applying to a lot of ivies as a means of winning us over. Just a guess tho.

hey I am struggling to decide whether or not I should choose to William and Mary over Vanderbilt. It's a tough decision to make. They are about equally good, I think. The only concern is "money". Vanderbilt of course gave me tons of money (I only need to pay less than 10000 for a year) whereas WM gave me NOTHING! (which means I have to pay 25000 a year)
What should I do? could you guys tell me about both schools' reputation? which one is academically better? Which college offers better college experience? etc.

Here are some stats on William & Mary:

- Second oldest U.S. university (Harvard is first)
- Oldest U.S. law school
- Birthplace of Phi Beta Kappa
- Alma mater of Washington, Jefferson, Monroe and Tyler
- Most selective U.S. public university
- Third highest SAT scores in the South (only Duke and Rice are higher)
- Highest entering freshman GPAs of any public university (Berkeley is close)
- Fastest growing public university endowment
- Outstanding accounting, biology, chemistry, history and physics departments

As you can see, William & Mary has an amazing academic tradition. Yes, the grading scale is somewhat deflationary and the course offerings are not as extensive as some other schools, but William & Mary is a school high on tradition which doesn't subscribe to fads where everyone graduates cum laude and there is a supermarket of course offerings. The school is committed to the British university model which is human-scale as opposed to other university models which focus on research and increasing enrollments. W&M may not be for everyone but a degree from there has timeless substance, something you can't find from most other U.S. schools which are constantly trying to reposition or recreate themselves.
