any word on this college, esp. the film department?

By Laurenz (Laurenz) on Thursday, July 03, 2003 - 02:46 pm: Edit

My son is going to be a BFA Musical Theatre Major at Emerson in the Fall and is very excited. It's a liberal arts school that specializes in communication and the arts, and is very well revered. Boston is a great city, as well.

Laurenz,
thanks, my son is gong to be a senior in the fall; we went up to Boston and took the Emerson tour, pretty exciting, the school looks interesting and very hands on, which is what my son likes. Pleae keep in touch and let me know what your son thinks. Are you from Boston?

By Laurenz (Laurenz) on Tuesday, July 08, 2003 - 12:01 am: Edit

No, actually, we're from New Jersey, just outside of New York, so my son, Scott, wanted a city atmosphere for his college experience. Boston seems very manageable and very social (I heard somewhere 1 of every 5 people in Boston is a college student). It doesnt hurt also that Emerson has one of the best musical theatre programs in the world, that they have a castle in the Netherlands, and that they offered my son a bunch of money to go there. If you'd like to email my son, Scott, his email is Y_A_Z_42@yahoo.com. He would love to get in touch with others at Emerson. Thanks.

I am going to be a senior in high school this fall. I am considering NYU, Boston U, Sarah Lawrence, Emerson College and Fordham U and will study theatre. I love big city life but I can be shy and sometimes have trouble meeting people as it is so can someone please tell me ANYTHING they know about the social life at any of these colleges! Thank you!!!

Is Emerson really a "liberal arts college", in the sense of having the whole gamut of liberal arts and sciences available? I thought it was a specialized arts/communication conservatory type school.

By Writerchick (Writerchick) on Tuesday, March 09, 2004 - 03:34 pm: Edit

Susaninraleigh,

From my point of view (I am a writing major at Emerson), yes, Emerson is really a "liberal arts college" in the sense of the word. Emerson is primarily an arts/communication school in terms of the majors it offers, but there are many different courses that a student can elect to take outside of their major, as well as many general education requitrements that incorporate a true liberal arts education. There are social science courses one can take as well as nutrition courses, math courses, there's even a biology course. Add that to history, language, philosophy, and of course the drama, writing, and other communications courses that Emerson is known for, and a student can be guaranteed an excellent liberal arts education at Emerson.

Daughter got accepted but not to musical theater. Looks like she will be at Boston U getting a BFA in acting, which she is very happy about. Good luck to others waiting.

A friend of mine was just accepted into the Honors Program and being accepted early. His original acceptance letter didn't directly state what program he was accepted to, though. He applied for film and assumes he was received in that program. Did this happen to anyone else?

does anybody know anything about the social life at Emerson?

By Broadwaybaby34 (Broadwaybaby34) on Saturday, June 12, 2004 - 08:06 pm: Edit

I'm going to be a senior in the fall, and i'm hoping to go to Emerson as a musical theater major, but i don't know their standards for GPAs and SATs. Is it mainly based on the audition or or transcripts?

By Marissal (Marissal) on Saturday, July 03, 2004 - 08:28 pm: Edit

I think you have to get accepted into the school itself before you can be accepted into its departments. So I guess that's a big emphasis on transcripts...but i'm not positive.

By Roscp80 (Roscp80) on Friday, August 06, 2004 - 02:20 pm: Edit

From what I've been told they don't strictly focus on any one thing more than others. If you impress them in anything, you're probably okay, be it your test scores, essay, interview, or GPA. I'd say try not to sweat it too much. I was way stressed out applying last fall and I got in.
