Discus: What Are My Chances?: Chances at Virginia
By Pkit (Pkit) on Monday, October 04, 2004 - 03:34 pm: Edit

hey, i go to a very hard private school where the classes are... very hard. Everyone from my school goes to a 4 yr college, and out of the 64 kids in my grade, 14 are going to be national merit commended and/or semifinalists.

Honors and AP classes are weighted .5 and AP and honors are pretty much only offered in 11th grade on (thus partially explaining my low gpa)

I take pretty much all the hardest courses offered and this year i take:
Stat AP, AP Calc AB, Drama AP (literature AP test), Advanced Bio Honors, Spanish 4 (looks like i'll have a 3.8 or so for first quarter/semester)

unweighted overall: 3.3, weighted: 3.5
school does NOT rank. probably 20-30% though.

SAT: 1480 (730 M, 750 V)
National Merit commended student (206)
Haven't taken sat2 yet but will prolly have 2 tests with about 700-750, an 1 test with 650-700.

extra curricular: 1 yr JV tennis, 3 yr varsity tennis, 1 yr student council treasurer (senior yr), 2 yrs scholastic scrimmage club,2 yrs Model UN, 3 yrs ski club, 1 yr jv golf, 2 years chorale

community service: 65 hrs library, 20 at local radio station, 40 at hospital working in ER (by the end of the summer i'll have about 150 hrs total)

I took a Psychology class at lehigh university this summer and got an A.

So... I LOVED UVA when i visited it and i'm thinking of applying there early (i know there is no difference in admissions statistics). Do u think i have ANY chance there? is it more likely that i will get in or not? thanks a lot!

Your SAT looks good, but your GPA and rank do not.
Heard that UVa weighs GPA/rank more than SAT.
If you plan to do ED then you might have a better chance. Try to explain why your GPA is not high enough and emphasize good grades in AP classes.
PA sends many students to UVa each year, either 2nd or 3rd next to NY, so you need to stand out.
Good luck!

PKIT, I think I live pretty close to you - Our school is just over the hill from Lehigh. A student at our high school was accepted at UVA, ED last year and is now attending. Our students can also not take AP's until junior year and not a lot are offered. The guy that was accepted was in the top 10 of his class and President of our Key Club, editor of some section of the school newspaper and ran cross country. I think you have a shot at it, but make sure that your school profile is up to date and explains the ranking of grades. If you really love UVA, ED may be the way to go.
