how do you know your essays and recs will be great already/

Just worried about the class rank...
I've written the essays, which I'm proud of, and I'm confident in what my teachers have to say about me.
Of course I can't guarantee either, but nothing's certain in this game.

Penn and Johns Hopkins are weak in Engineering. You should apply to Princeton and Michigan-Ann Arbor instead. For one thing, both of those schools do not look at Freshman year grades. Secondly, you have the credentials.
