College Discussion Forums: What Are My Chances?: Overconfident But With Bad Grades, PLEASE HELP!
By J_Man (J_Man) on Wednesday, September 29, 2004 - 03:55 pm: Edit

I'm too overconfident, please help!

Can some one please take a look at my stats and my list of colleges and analyze (as in which colleges will be reaches and whatnot)

http://www.prstats.com/2009/display.php?user=J_Man

And perhaps suggest some other schools to me that can be good matches or safeties. Thanks to anyone who can help!

i'd say that you have good chances at a lot of schools.
i don't know why you said that you have bad grades when you dont.

I've got several B's, 2 of which are low B's. and a 88B in a gym class cause my teacher hated me and thought that I was too arrogant. Is that not too Bad?

Cornell University - match/reach
Dartmouth College - reach
Duke University - match/reach
Harvard University - super reach
Johns Hopkins University - match
New York University - match
Northwestern University match/reach
University of California - don't know
University of Pennsylvania - reach
Washington University - match (maybe waitlist, though)

I assume CMU is too close to home. What majors are you interested in?

Jman, if you panic about such insignificant things, college is going to be miserable for you. Students in the top 10% of their HS class with 1450 on their SAT have no right to claim that they have bad grades. This said, Harvard is a big reach, and Duke, Penn and Dartmouth are reasonable reaches. The rest of your schools are matches. You do not have a safety, so you better do some research on that front.

I'm currently planning on getting a major that is related to pre-med (i'm kinda interested in neurology and neuroengineering) and I would also like to pursue a film minor if possible.

Anyone else able to offer an opinion? Thanks.

Psh...

My best year was:

B- - Midi
B- - P.E.
B- - Adv Science
B- - US History
A - Algebra II
D - Geometry
A+ - Chem

So don't talk about bad grades, please.

D+ - AP Chem
A+ - Precal
C - AP Spanish (never showed up but got a 5)
C - AP History (I always hated history)
A- - Midi II
B - P.E.

Reason being I'm absent a lot/lack of motivation/blah blah blah...

So far this year:

A+'s straight across... (talk about late...)

I know this isn't my post or w/e, but you need to learn what bad grades are. I think After 1st marking period freshman year my GPA was 2.11 thankfully, with my classes this year, I'll be able to end with around 4.3 ^_^

i understand what u r saying about grades...since all asians seem to be so much more self conscious. When i applied to school, I was nervous that I wasn't good enough to go to the schools i applied to. But ultimately, u must trust that the school will make the decision on how well rounded you are and how perfect u can fit into the community and definitely not on some petty grade.

but, overconfident is bad because it can mess up ur reality. please keep everything in mind that things may go wrong. For this, u must give urself a second path, so to speak.

Just wondering, is there something u r super passionate about?

it's getting annoying when people with perfect stats say there 1 B+ in the hardest school in the hardest class is a terrible grade, and now all of their dreams are crushed

Well I'm rather passionate about film(director), but it's not really a wise career choice and I have never taken a formal class on film, so it's more like a hobby.

Your grades are strong but the Ivies are a reach with those Bs in 10th and 11th grades. Your SATs and recs are excellent and may compensate for a few Bs in difficult classes. A safety would be a good idea. Apply to all listed and hope for the best. You never know. I agree with Ohio moms list but I would take the "match" off Duke.

By Ivysearch (Ivysearch) on Friday, October 01, 2004 - 06:10 pm: Edit

I meant your ECs and SAT may compensate for your Bs

I think I'll do Pitt and Penn State-Main Campus as my safeties.

As for my recommendations, I am getting a very good one that is rather indepth and about a page long, and another one which is short but pretty much exalts me. I kinda wanted to go for a long and indepth, and a short and to the point.

JMan, I think you might want to consider retesting before applying, or doing so during the process. The Chinese American students I know at Brown are almost ALL 1500+/top5%/superamazinglytalented.

Cut down that EC list. No one cares about laundry lists. It's all about meanginful activities.

You will be deferred for sure at Harvard. I would consider applying ED to a middle Ivy, if you want the best chance at the best level school you can possibly get into.

By J_Man (J_Man) on Saturday, October 02, 2004 - 12:52 pm: Edit

I've thought abour teesting but I have already taken the test once in each grade (becausse of my parents) and my grades in 9th and 10th grade have been horrible(I wasn't aware I could cancel my scores), but I have increased about 200 each time. wouldn't it look bad if i took the test a fourth time? Like i can prob definitely get a 800 in math, but it's verbal where it hurts me.

I don't think colleges will worry about your 9th grade SAT, somehow. You might try taking a 10 Real's SAT and seeing how you do on the verbal as a senior. If you break 700 in the practice, you might want to go for it. First priority is writing, though. Work hard on your prep!

By J_Man (J_Man) on Monday, October 04, 2004 - 04:18 pm: Edit

Well, should I even bother with applying to harvard my current stats? I'll prob try to get in as humanities, and either arts or pre-med vocation, because i'm rather interested in film.
