Hey guys! Here are my stats, if you could let me know what you think my chances ED are that'd be awesome thanks!
SATI: 700 verbal, 680 math
SATII: 800 writing, 650 bio, 630 iic (retake oct)
Courses Jr. Year:
AP Bio, AP art history, French, English, Digital Photography independent, Stat/Pre-Calc
Sr. Year:
AB (an AP) Calc, French, Two English electives, AP Photo, (accelerated) Physics, and Journalism (a requirement if you're on the newspaper)
My GPA approx. a 3.6, our school doesn't rank but I got "High Distinction"
ECs:
Founder and ed in chief of an online photo gallery (the first successful publication, I'm told, in over 25 years, I also got an "faculty commendation," like an award, for it)
Editor on the literary/arts magazine
Photo editor of the award-winning school paper
Varsity Crew (captain) First boat for two years, coxing for four years
80 hrs of community service
School intensive photography trip to Tuscany
Documentary Photography team for the school
Give tours for the school
I also worked as a studio assistant this summer with a professional photographer
BU Racing Camp (crew)
Summer educational travel with a major in Art History Minor in Architecture
Art intensive camp: Major in Photography Minor in Metalworks
I go to a highly competitive HS in NE. My strengths are in my art, but I am applying to Penn because it has a strong arts program but is well rounded. I've taken just about every photography course my school offers...and continued to work outside of school. I should have really good recs and a great essay. I'm a double legacy (both my parents) at upenn, which I'm hoping will cancel out the low-ish standardized tests. I've met with the head of the art dept, and the head of photography, both of whom seemed to really like my portfolio, but I don't know if that will really help me come decision time. Any insight would be great, thanks!!

Reasonable shot as legacy, but you would be much stronger if you can get the SATI to mid 700s.

thanks fresca for your honest response, unfortunately, I don't have time to retake the SATI's. do you think that's going to be a major issue? also, do you know if (since I'm applying with intent to enter the visual studies major) that the head of photo and/or art will be sitting in when they look at my app?
I'm going for my interview this weekend! ahhhh.

Many schools will send your work to relevent departments for a look see. My suggestion is to contact the professors of interest, talk to them about the program and ask if they will review your work. With your strong writing score, good verbal and artistic slant, I don't think the math should hurt too much. Good luck!

I talked to the head of photography again, she said she wanted to write a letter on my behalf to admissions.(I showed her some work in April, but am still sending a portfolio w/app) What does this mean exactly? I know it's not quite the same pull as recruiting or anything, but how much can it help?
