Discus: What Are My Chances?: Help with SAT score...awards...ivies
By Srkkadz (Srkkadz) on Saturday, September 25, 2004 - 09:51 am: Edit

I am going to take my SATs in October, and I was wondering what score I need to get into the Ivies with my transcript? I am personally hoping for a 1400 or higher.

Also, I have received no noteworthy accolades all my high school career. Is that going to hurt me a lot?

Some more information: I am from Florida, and I attend a public school. It was on a 4 by 4 schedule (8 classes a year, but this means only 4 APs for a whole year). Just my senior year it has reverted to the 6 periods a day. So, 9 of these classes have been taken online.

These are colleges I am aiming for: What are my chances?
Harvard
Yale
Duke
Cornell
Johns Hopkins
University of Washington (Missouri)
Emory University
Rollins College

Admissions in select colleges are like crap shoot. Also depends a lot on your intended major. You are in the range. But you need to select couple of safety schools.

19 ap's, woah, my school only offers 10

Don't obssess over the Ivies will you. They are overrated. Not that they aren't good, but for every Ivy, there are two or three non-Ivies that are just as good. Schools like Amherst, Cal, Caltech, Carleton, Carnegie Mellon, Chicago, Duke, Emory, Georgetown, Grinnell, Johns Hopkins, MIT, Michigan-Ann Arbor, Middlebury, Northwestern, Pomona, Rice, Stanford, Swarthmore, Vanderbilt, UCLA, UNC-Chapel Hill, Texas-Austin, Wesleyan, Williams, Wisconsin-Madison, WUSL.

If you want a serious shot at the mega-selective schools (Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Stanford, MIT and Caltech), you will need much more than 1400 on your SAT to have a reasonable chance. Closer to 1500. But all the other schools should be within your reach if you can break the 1400 on your SAT. Good luck.

When you list your AP scores, are those all of them or just the only 5's? If it's all of them, why didn't you take the other 12 tests?

Agree with Alexandre, you will need over 1500 to have a serious shot at ivys. Good luck!

University of Washington (Missouri)

Do you mean Washington University in St. Louis?

wow you've taken a shitload of AP classes. I'm still wondering how you can take 8 APs this year and still have time to post messages.

Chances? hmm i guess harvard/yale are slight reaches. Cornell and JH are reasonable, and others are matches.

SRKKADZ: The macro class was taken online, so I opted not to take it. As for the other 3 courses, those scores were cancelled on a misunderstanding with collegeboard.

Annieivy, I never said that in order to have a shot at the Ivy he needs at least a 1500. I said that to have a serious shot at H,P,Y,S and M, he would need at least a 1500. For the other Ivy League, I think a 1400 would put him in contention.

I'd like to apply to similar schools and was also wondering if anyone could tell me what my chances were. I also have received no noteworthy accolades from outside of school, except for National Merit Semifinalist, if that even means anything, and I am also from a public high school in Florida. I am a female.

I have taken 12 APs, including this year, and except for requirements, the rest of my classes were honors
AP European History
AP Environmental Science
AP English Language
AP Spanish Language
AP Psychology
AP American History
AP Chemistry
AP Biology
AP English Literature
AP Macroeconomics/American Government
AP Calculus BC
AP Statistics

Out of the 7 that I have already taken, my best scores were a 5 on Psychology and Spanish, a 4 on European History. The rest were 3's, and one 2.
I have a 750 Verbal, 780 Math, and my SAT 2's are not so good but I am retaking them. I have good EC's, such as lots officer positions and participation in clubs and community service, just not awards out of school (like academic competitions). I am 18 in a class of 706. What kind of schools should I be applying to? Thanks.

this post is reminding me of how bad my school is compared to the schools you guys attend. It's sad when i got to the 4th or 5th best public school in my state, yet here i feel like i go to an inner city school

Haha. What state? Well does anyone know what my chances at schools like Harvard, Penn, Duke, Brown are? Not very high right?
