What are my shots at Harvard, Yale, Stanford, and the top UC's?

By Alexandre (Alexandre) on Tuesday, August 03, 2004 - 02:23 pm: Edit

All the UCs are safeties for you. Just apply to Cal unless you like one of the others for some personal reason.

Stanford, Harvard and Yale, along with Princeton and MIT are probably the only reaches for you, but even then, I would say you have a better than 30% chance at them.

All other schools are matches or safeties.

What do you want to major in?

By Drunksage (Drunksage) on Tuesday, August 03, 2004 - 02:26 pm: Edit

I'm not certain on what my major I'll declare. Something biology-related is probably the best considering that I might be looking at pharmacy or research in my future.

I would not beat around the bush. I would recommend the following schools. All are excellent in biology:

Research universities:
Cal-Berkeley (safety)
Chicago (match)
Cornell (match)
Duke (match)
Harvard (reach)
Johns Hopkins (match)
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (reach)
Michigan-Ann Arbor (safety, if you apply in September)
Princeton (reach)
Stanford (reach)

If you prefer the LAC environment:
Amherst (match)
Bowdoin (match)
Carleton (match)
Davidson (match)
Haverford (match)
Middlebury (match)
Oberlin (match)
Pomona (match)
Reed (safety)
Williams (match)

Do your research and have it it dude! Apply to just 2 safeties, 2 matches and 4 reaches. I would be shocked if you didn't get into at least 6 of those 8!

why does it say you're part of Berkeley class of 2008 in your info?

By Drunksage (Drunksage) on Tuesday, August 03, 2004 - 03:34 pm: Edit

You caught me. :-P

I was just looking for a hypothetical review of my chances (since I just started going to this discussion forum). Indeed, I'm already Regent's at Cal. Didn't get into those privates. Ah well.

Thanks a bunch though, Alexandre. I really appreciate it.
