Hello Smart People!
I'm being sarcastic but I really can't believe how good everybody on this website is in school and how hard you all work! Especially the minorities, because it goes against all those stereotypes we face with most of the messages. Anyways, I was wondering about something, if I was a part of an rally against the war in Iraq should I put that on my app.? I'm afraid that the person who reads my app. will be biased if they don't agree with my views..thanks!

I don't think you will have a problem with an adcom holding that against you, since most people who work at a university are liberals. You might get a conservative, though, so I would leave it out. Also, it's not really much of an EC. I mean, I don't see it helping you out in any way.

And I'm not one of the smart people on this board, I have a 3.4 GPA and a 1400 SAT

Were you part of the rally or did you help organize it/run the event? IF it was the latter I would definitely put it on there, even if the adcom is conservative they'd still have to respect the logistical skill involved in running an event

If you only went to one, I wouldn't put it. But if you go out of your way to many of them, then it could be something worth mentioning.
If you help set it up, definately put it, especially if its more than one.

Also if put it if you protested the war by other means (pamphelts, articles, website, etc). That would show youre deeply devoted to something.

i wouldn't suggest it. anything too political is dangerous.

I organize several events with the "He's Not My
Prez" club in school, because I'm one of the officers...I still really don't know whether to put it our not because I have devoted a lot of time to these events but I also don't want to offend admissions officers

I agree with chrisy. Don't put it because the adcom will be biased, even though it goes against the bylaws of admission procedures, it is still human instinct to judge with haste, as noted by Nick Carraway.

i started a liberal youth of america club in my school and put that on my application. i even wrote one of my essays about it. but i tried to make the point that i started the club to increase political awareness and that it was a touchy thing to do because i went to a very conservative high school. i'd say if you make the point that you are involved in politics that it can't hurt you at all.

put it on there...organizing stuff like that takes alot of time and energy.
besides what schools are you thinking of applying to? probably not bastions of conservativism.
if you still really feel gun shy about putting your political beliefs on your app then leave it vague
"Founded progressive political club at school, organized several rallies/events to raise political awareness"

stand up for what you believe in wheather the adcom likes it or not, if he doesnt like you, why should you like the school

Appliedmath, I don't think you can really judge the entire school because of one narrow-minded person.
