Caltech's average scores are ridiculous! I think their average math and verbal scores are about 780 and 740, respectively. Best of luck, Dragonium.

Yeah, I applied. Stats:
4.11 weighted, 3.91 unweighted.
Class rank 4/234
800 Math, 550 V
ENglish = second language; Russian = 1st
ACT: 34 composite with 31 eng, 36 math, 34 read, 34 sci.... on one of 32 act's i had 34 english...
EE major.
A bunch of awards in math and sci; most are local only. However, I am one of 6 winners in grades 10-12 in ExploraVision science awards program from US, Canada, and US Territories (getting my pic into USA today, and a bunch of other cool stuff with this program); TEAM+S captain for 2 years, team got 1st in state division and 2nd in state overall (btw, i organized the competition this year). Organized the Idaho Science Olympiad this year... got a bronze medal on it last year... Winner of the Internet Math Challenge... Doing research on sonoluminescence... Business professionals of america -- on regionals, I have had 1st International Business, 1st Website Development team, 2nd Financial math & Analysis, and 1st Banking & Finance from two years I have participated in it. This year, I got a state medal for winning Financial Math & Analysis. One of five state finalists in AAA Travel High School Challenge in geography...
other stuff that i dont wanna spend time mentioning right now.
essays...
1. Just why I want a research-focused environment and such.
2. Immigration from Russia to the USA.
3. Sonoluminescence research paper with a 3D graphic.
additional info, which followed the format of essay number 3:
Quake 2 map that I designed.. Took screenshots of the map and the software I used to create it.
Also sent a couple of letters after the application, mentioning some state and nat'l awards that I got after the Jan 1 deadline. I dont know if they even looked at those letters, though (that would suck because my biggest awards were won after the app deadline).
Oh, and almost forgot SAT IIs. 800 iic, 720 phy, 650 chem, 630 bio-E, 730 wri.
My school does not have AP Chem or AP Phy classes. I took the highest level of Phy in 10th grade, so I forgot much of it when I took the test in 12th grade. Same is true for chemistry. Took the highest level math classes as a junior (ap stats and ap calc)... was the only junior in each of those classes (the rest were seniors).
7 APs upon graduation. No AP exams taken yet. Will take calc BC (self-taught) and AP Govt (comp and US) this year. I also have something like 21 college credits and will have 28 upon graduation, but they are all low-level classes like trig, college alg, calc, stats, us hist, bio...
Do they mail the decisions during the first week of April?

Hey, why don't you post (in your profile) the third essay picture or send it by e-mail? It would be nice! What software did you use in creating such picture?
I know that Caltech's students has CRAZY test scores. But, I learnt from somewhere, maybe from embark.com, that test scores aren't the modt important requirement of admission, not like Stanford, and its friends....

dima, you REALLY should've applied to MIT.
| By Quarky (Quarky) on Saturday, March 22, 2003 - 11:01 am: Edit |
Why is that, Milena? I was thinking about it, and I know I would have had a better chance at MIT and CIT, but it's too far away and is crowded. Dragonium, feel free to e-mail me at quarkygluon@hotmail.com. I will then e-mail you the picture. However, the picture was not the main part. it was just something to put into the square. The research paper is the main part of that essay. I used Anfy3D, so the pic is not that good at all!

why MIT? because you'd have an amazing chance with them, and, let us all admit, MIT is possibly the strongest school for engineering and things alike in the whole world.
and how can you say it's too far away? it's just somewhat more eastward from illinois... california is also far... I just think you could've sent them a really strong application, given what you posted just up there, just to see what kind of an answer you'd end up with... enrolling is not compulsory... I'm surprized you resisted applying to them, because with such strong and unique resume and interesting work, good results, anybody could tell you you'd have a great chance... perhaps you could've even won some finaid from them, like need based ..
not that I'm pushy, always telling you how good you are, it's just that... you're good. and people like you should go to MIT because that's the best place for them to evolve, period.
however, this is only my humble opinion, dima, you should always do what you feel is best for you.

Good luck, but even someone who took AP Calc as a freshman in high school and independently took courses in Real and Complex Analysis, Linear Algebra, and Vector Calculus as a senior is likely to be turned down.
High school is full of lost opportunities. If only I had taken Diff Eq...
Oh well, no matter where you go, you will always have the opportunity to apply for research and take a good look at all those fun books in the library (check out Tom Apostol's text on Calculus or Kip Thorne's book on Gravitation). I mean it. Many an interesting discovery or new profound insight has been found independently.
