Discus: What Are My Chances?: March 2003 Archive: Trouble choosing a major....
By Syntax (Syntax) on Sunday, March 09, 2003 - 01:13 pm: Edit

I have narrowed my choices down to two subjects, Biology and Physics. My only dilemma is that I didn't do very well in Trig last year, so I'm feeling a little discouraged about a math-related major. However, I did have a really bad teacher, so my poor performance can be attributed to that. I am doing very well in Physics this year, and I really enjoy the subject. My Physics teacher even suggested that I get a double major in both. I really don't know. Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

I would go with the Biology it is much more enjoyable and more jobs that you'll like are available and they don't require math. Don't double major physics and bio!!! That is a no no! If you don't like math you won't be able to go through all of the math course you have to take in order to be a physics major. Hope you make whatever choice is best for you. Good luck, I hope this helps.

Well, not to say I don't like math, I just didn't do very well in Trig, but I also had a really bad teacher. I had enjoyed my math classes up to that, and this year I am taking AP Statistics, which isn't too much of a stretch for me. Can I ask why a double major in Bio\Physics is a not a good idea? My teacher said there is an increase in people needed (especially in the Biotech industry) who have a solid background in both fields. Thanks for the feeback. Any I get is a big help.

Well I said that about doubling in Bio and Physics because you need tons of diff courses for each one. If you want to do biotech then go to some place like Johns Hopkins where they have more of a concentrated major or just take more physics classes but not enough to double major - that would be like killing yourself. If you you really want to find out what it's like to double major try to find bio or physics students at a school you're looking at and ask them. I don't know for sure, but from what people have told me - it isn't exactly fun. Hope this helps.
