I'm thinking of going to Loyola Chicago next year as a transfer (junior), but I'm reading these posts and thinking that maybe its not that great of a school. What do you all think? I want to go to U Chicago, NYU, or Stanford (law schools)after undergraduate. Also, what should I focus on as far as ECs, grades, etc to better my admission chances? Also, I heard that you should NOT major in political science to go to law school, but that's what I'm most interested in. Please help.

Well, I'm from California and I've never heard of Loyola Chicago before. However, if you're concerned about law school, don't worry about how "prestigious" your undergrad school is. Even top law schools want students from all types of school. Regarding political science, it's true that law school want people from all undergrad majors, but it certainly doesn't hurt you to major in poli sci, because the majority of law school students do just that.

The only negative thing about majoring in Political Science is that people seem to think it's almost required if you want to be an attorney. I'm going to major in Political Science because I love politics and political theories. When I decided that my freshman year of high school, I had no idea that it was the most common degree of entering law students. I spoke with a lawyer and he told me to major in what you enjoy and have an interest in, because mostly law school is writing so as long as you have a strong background in that, you should be fine. Same thing if you want to be a politician, become in expert in something besides political science so that you will actually have something to contribute outside of political knowledge.

Thanks for the input. Another question, I am also interested in history, english, and spanish (I have the first four semesters of college level spanish). I would like to either double major or have two minors. What would be more benificial in your opinions? (what combination? and which areas?)
Also, I have a 3.92(1st and 2nd years combined) and 4.0(from my present school only), but not many ECs because I work full time. Next year, I plan to take out living loans and be much more involved, but will my lack of ECs for my first two years hurt my chances much?
Thanx

Again, I say pick the subjects that you enjoy studying the most. Not only will it be a lot more fun for you, but you'll probably do a lot better, and law schools look at your GPA very heavily, regardless of your major. I would suggest either double majoring, or having one major and one minor. I don't think that you should have a major and two minors, because then you look like you don't have any developed interests, and also it makes it look like it's easy to just add on a minor. Pick the two topics that you enjoy the most, and just double major or major/minor. By the way, what school are you at now?

I went to Eureka College which is a very small college in central illinois for a year and I didn't like it, so now I'm at a community college. I like to think that I'm a good enough student that I could have gone to a "good" school, but sometimes life situations don't always let you do that right away, ya know?
