Discus: What Are My Chances?: February 2003 Archive: Chances at Princeton
By Princeton___Hopeful on Saturday, February 15, 2003 - 09:40 pm: Edit

1540 SAT-750 V, 790 M
790 Hebrew, 760 Physics (self-taught; only 1 year of physics available at my school, had to teach myself the other half), 730 Math IIc, 680 Writing.

National Merit Finalist
3.92 GPA unweighted- 16 in class of 420
2nd Degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do
Pres. of Chess Club, Editor of Lit. Magazine, VP of National Honor Society and also of Mu Alpha Theta (Math Club).

Taking every available AP course offerred at my school, including Calc BC.

A question for you guys:
I got a 3.72 GPA in my Freshman year. I heard Princeton doesn't use this in their calculations, and if you exempt my Freshman year, I have a 4.0. Therefore, will they recalculate my class rank to be #1 (everyone with a 4.0 is #1 at my high school, regardless of course strength).

You have a very good chance, remember, for almost every person applying who is more qualified than you, there are probably 10 less qualified.

The funny thing is that most people who apply to the Ivies are academically qualified. I think Penn has something like 80% of it's applicants being qualified.

It's more about how you present yourself then anything else.

The President of..Chess Club? nice.
Your sat scores are ok..might want to take Math IIc again though. You're taking every AP at your school? Are you psycho? I'm not saying that that would be a problem, but...

How are your essays?

Your low writing score will hurt, esp. at Princeton.

I had superb essays, but will that be enough to offset my poor writing score?
