Discus: What Are My Chances?: April 2004 Archive: Chances for an undistinguished grade-grubber

i was on a track to be really involved in EC's at my old school (a catholic school in westchester county), then i went away to boarding school and became, well...an antisocial loser with straight A's. or ALMOST straight-A's.

what are my chances at Dartmouth, Haverford, Swarthmore, UPenn, Kenyon, Columbia, etc., with these stars:

1380 SAT's (760 V, 620 M)- retaking MANY times
anticipated SATII's: writing, lit, us history

5 on AP Euro 10th grade, and taking a special prep class for the AP English Lang. in the spring

current grades:
AP US: A-
French III: A
Civil War: A-
English: A+
Chemistry: A
Religion: A+
Functions: B-
(these grades are an A- average, on track to make Cum Laude at my school)

Next year, I'll be taking AP Human Geo., AP Chem, AP Bio, AP French, and AP English Lit

this summer, i'm either taking a college-level calculus class (cuz my mom's convinced i cant get into college w/o it) or going to summer program in Cambridge

I'm a legacy at Dartmouth: dad (who gives money yearly) and great-great-uncle (who knew Nelson Rockefeller there...cool huh?)

i horseback ride, but do JV sports at school. crew's my big thing, but i'm a lightweight. do newspaper and literary magazine, but only sometimes.

what do you think my chances are at top schools?

also...how much does it hurt me that i'm from westchester county, NY? and can anyone else suggest good matches/safeties, whatever...cuz my list's like 30+ schools so far.

What's your rank/GPA? Have you won awards in horseback riding or crew?

Anyways, raise those SAT scores up a little bit and you're in the running. Don't retake more than 3 times though.

just get them into the mid 1400s and I'm pretty sure you're a good match for Dartmouth......or a safety if you dad is giving enough......
