What are my chances at virginia tech? I'm a junior now and I've got a 2.8 on a 4 point scale, 1450 SAT (650 verbal, 800 math), I've taken mostly honors and AP classes, I've been in two or three clubs per year, and my school's grading scale is tougher than an average school (I worked HARD for that 2.8, lol). Do colleges even care how tough your high school was? Also, if virginia tech is out of my league, then any tips as to what engineering schools I'd have a shot at would be appreciated. Thanks

2.8 is pretty low..
if you're out-of-state, then chances are pretty slim

Virginia Tech does not yet differentiate between in state and out of state applicants. If you are showing a grade trend that is going up, or if you have had some personal adversity to account for those grades I would add a note to point that out. VA Tech gets so many applicants that it can sometimes be just a quick numbers decision. Good luck!

I recently went to VT for a tour and was told during the admission information session that the average applicant had a 3.6gpa and an 1180sat. I'm in a similar place, 1310sat and 2.8gpa and was told that only 8% of students with an uw gpa of <3.0 are accepted, but all circumstances are considered. The admissions counselor made certain to note that she, personally, has denied admission to 2 students with 1600sats and 2.8,2.9 gpas. She said that it is important to show improved grades and to note why your grades were/are poor. I'd certainly apply to other schools as safeties, but you/we might have atleast a slight chance.

By Tjchokri04 (Tjchokri04) on Monday, March 08, 2004 - 04:34 pm: Edit

does your school rank?

i know people with 3.0+'s from my school (which is in virginia, and one of the top magnet schools in the country) who don't get into tech for humanities majors. so while i'm sure they consider how difficult your school is, schools like tjhsst and basically all the schools in northern virginia are incredibly difficult, so i don't think your tough school will make you stand out.

even for kids from here in virginia wouldn't stand a chance with a 2.8. and especially not for the engineering school which is incredibly competitive.

sorry

I'm from WV and applied to VT. I have a 29ACT and a 3.96 GPA, 18/263. Is it safe to assume i'm in if they sent me an app. for the honors program and an offer from the business school for a 4k a year scholarship?.. Also, if i wrote a really good "personal statement" and had excellent letters of recc., what are my chances at the honors program?

By Crazyandy (Crazyandy) on Monday, March 08, 2004 - 08:45 pm: Edit

Cjd, not sure on ur questions there, but I got the $5k a year engineering letter and the honors app too. 3.9/27 ACT. Hoping that I'm in but don't know if I'll accept (its pretty far away from a small town in OH)

By Cjd (Cjd) on Tuesday, March 09, 2004 - 04:31 pm: Edit

where in OH?... i'm like 6 hours from VT and its the closest school i applied to..lol...mailed the honors app. today.

By Kbyws37 (Kbyws37) on Tuesday, March 09, 2004 - 09:42 pm: Edit

to Cjd
you're basically in if they even sent you a scholarship. and u have a good gpa and rank for VT.

Yeah i've known people who got in that were much less qualified than I am...I'm just trying to see if anyone can gauge my chances at their honors program.

I haven't heard anything regarding acceptance from VT yet but I did receive a letter yesterday asking for more Financial Aid info...is this a good sign?? I hope so. I need to make a decision soon - this is driving me nuts.

p.s. I also received info on applying for the engineering scholarship...a few months ago.

I got that. I think everyone that applies gets that.

I know of at least one person who has received acceptance to Tech this past Monday. He's in engineering. I applied for engineering also and haven't heard anything yet. Do you think they notified all of the engineering applicants at the same time or do they review all apps on a rolling basis and send them out as decisions are made? Maybe they'll do another mailing tomorrow.

Does VT send acceptances in big envelopes or little ones?

By Elisa (Elisa) on Thursday, March 25, 2004 - 02:01 pm: Edit

I just got admitted at George Mason ..still waiting for VT

By Brownzbb (Brownzbb) on Thursday, March 25, 2004 - 03:01 pm: Edit

Hey to all potential Hokies :-) Heard (not officially) that acceptance letters are going out tomorrow (Friday March 26). I also called them about the honors letter and they said, "We can't 'legally' tell you that you're accepted, but we get our list of honors candidates straight from admissions..so you can make your own assumptions." Don't know how they do it this year, but sis got her acceptance letter in a "full" envelope labled "OFFICIAL ACCEPTANCE TO VIRGINIA TECH." Of course, that was back in '02 when the informed everyone by Feb. 15...this April 1st thing really sucks...good luck to everyone! :-)

By Jae (Jae) on Thursday, March 25, 2004 - 04:53 pm: Edit

Hey Brownzbb-
Did you apply for engineering? Yeah, admissions told me they would be mailing tomorrow. I don't know why all these colleges wait till the same time to mail acceptance letters. It certainly doesn't give us a whole lot of time to decide. Well, looks like Saturday or Monday is the big day! Let's all hope it's a good one! I sure hope I get in since I'll actually be at Tech on Monday for the engineering open house. Definitely keeping my phone on so my mom can let me know when the mail comes. It would be a real bummer to find out that I didn't make it.

Cheers!!!

By Aus10 (Aus10) on Thursday, March 25, 2004 - 07:55 pm: Edit

The only non-ED applicant that knows he's been accepted at my school is the one who was invited to come interview for a scholarship. Everyone I know at Tech tells me if you were invited to apply for the honors program then you will get in. I'm not so sure that is true because I would image that nearly all engineering applicants would qualify. We shall see. Good luck everyone.

By Brownzbb (Brownzbb) on Thursday, March 25, 2004 - 09:03 pm: Edit

Hey Jae
No, I'm not going for engineering...I applied to the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences as a HFNE major. (Human Nutrition, Foods, and Exercise...a suggested undergrad field of study for pre-med, pre-dental, "pre-anything to do with health care") This is obviously not as competitive as the engineering program that Tech is so popular for. I can't really comment on the engineering at VT b/c I don't know much about it!! Have you applied to engineering? The girl I'm planning to room with is going into Aerospace Engineering and was accepted ED.

By Shmu529 (Shmu529) on Saturday, March 27, 2004 - 06:20 pm: Edit

Hey, online I got "unofficially accepted to an Alternate Major." Probably because I wanted engineering but didn't have the amazing scores to get it. Hopefully my letter will come Monday, and I can go undeclared, then "sneak" in to the engineering program.

By Brownzbb (Brownzbb) on Saturday, March 27, 2004 - 07:27 pm: Edit

Where did you get your Login ID? The e-mail sent the PIN number...but it said I had to use some 9-digit number for the Login ID...someone said it was in a letter they sent. I did my app online back in August, and it was confirmed on the site that they recieved it. I've gotten honors letter and scholarship notices but I can't remember if they sent a letter with any Login ID..anywhere else I could find it? If not, I guess I'm waiting until Monday!

By Hill (Hill) on Sunday, March 28, 2004 - 12:45 am: Edit

The login number was in the email you would have received by applying online. It tells you in the email to print the number or write the number down since it is very important. If you can't find that email, maybe if you log into your app, the number would be there. just a suggestion.
