bump up the SAT score and get 1 or 2 SATII's above 700 and u can get into schools like nyu boston college

By Crnchycereal (Crnchycereal) on Thursday, March 04, 2004 - 06:36 pm: Edit

Are you kidding me? He can get into NYU and BC easily at this point if he maintains his grades. He probably has a decent shot at some higher schools too, though probably not the top 20.

I notice that you have worked your way into more honors courses along the way - that's good. What is your rank in class (exact or approximate)? We are also dealing with the grades don't match the SAT's issue - as are many people on this forum (in one way or another).

What are some of your possible majors? Do you want to play hockey in college? 'Best School' should be best to you - not best for USNWR. Give us a little more data.

okay, so some more information....
No, I can't play hockey in college, because i have pins in my knee now and I need to wear a brace. I can continue the other sports, but hockey is out of the question. I go to an anal private school that doesn't do class rank of anything similar. They don't even let us see our grades at school. They send our transcripts home and we can't bring them to school. So really, I don't know. I would guess top 25%, but there are only 200 students in my class. I'm mainly looking at northeastern schools. I'm not going to declare a major, becuase i honestly don't know what to do with my life yet (part of that cused by lawyer father and surgeon mother telling me to be just like them). I'm reatking the SAT's here in about three weeks. I took all my SAT's right after my uncle died (no, i refuse to use this to my advantage in my applications--i respect my uncle more than that)

When I say best school, the best school for me would be the most academically rigourous north eastern (BOSTON!!!) school that I could possibly get into

By Ohio_Mom (Ohio_Mom) on Thursday, March 04, 2004 - 07:28 pm: Edit

Sorry to hear about your knee - I just did a look-up on USNWR for a friend's son and found a lot that did offer hockey.

You really need to find out your rank in class, or at least your decile. Get your lawyer father or surgeon mother(whomever is meaner) to help you extract this information for you from the GC. Also, check their gray book that lists the colleges students were accepted at and what their GPA's were. If your school is very competitive, your GPA and rank may not be so much of an issue.

Based on GPA and SAT score alone (and not knowing rank, competitve info, etc.) I would think that, for Boston, BU and Brandeis would be easy matches, BC a match/reach and Tufts a reach (that doesn't mean don't apply!). We are also looking at Colby and Bowdoin - but they are in Maine, and might be too out of the way for you.

Best wishes on your SAT's!

yeah, I really do need to be within driving distance of the city of boston (2-3 hours max) for personal reasons...

By Macadamiamin (Macadamiamin) on Thursday, March 04, 2004 - 10:36 pm: Edit

I live 10 miles from Bowdoin. 2 hours from Boston. 1.5 hours from Tufts/Brandeis on a good day (less cops :))

HAHA Macadamiamin...I always check for the cops too when leaving Maine...you are def right though w/ your times on a "good day."

Boston area schools to look into: (2-3 hours away, max)

Matches (roughly):
Boston College
Boston University
Brandeis
Connecticut College
Trinity
Bates
Holy Cross

Reaches:
Tufts
Amherst
Williams
Brown
Colby (maybe a match? not sure)

By Ohio_Mom (Ohio_Mom) on Friday, March 05, 2004 - 11:39 am: Edit

Hadn't thought of Williams - lots of ops for your athletics there. I found the Amherst College website really scary when they talked about what they wanted for academics - but if AriesAthena thinks its worth a shot, it would also be for my son of the similar stats.
I am glad that we will be driving the big Buick for our college visit with all you leadfoots out there.

how do you have a 3.5 gpa and a 3.8 unweighted?

By Gianscolere (Gianscolere) on Friday, March 05, 2004 - 12:35 pm: Edit

i think chrismeleonard meant it the other way around

By Ariesathena (Ariesathena) on Friday, March 05, 2004 - 02:01 pm: Edit

With the tennis/running/hockey in there, Amherst might be interested despite lower than average SATs. (I don't know enough about your school to say anything constructive about the GPA issue.) I think it applies more for Williams - I know a girl with very similar stats who got in, mostly by applying ED and talking to the basketball coach (the girl is an amazing b-ball player).
