Hey guys, im one of those kids who has just about everything. its not like im a jerk about it, i mean i help, volenteer, donate my time and money. I basically glide through highschool, im top 2 percent of my class in a prestigious private school in northern new jersey. I have a 3.98 GPA, with a 4.6 weighted GPA. i have a 1540 SAT, with varsity golf 9-12, varsity tennis 9-12, and jv soccer 9-10 just to be with freinds, but i sitll made it. On top of that, i am president of the class 9-12, and i am in the keyclub 9-12, national honors society 9-12, peir to peir tutoring 11-12 100 hours, Habitat for Humanitiy(building homes in south africa for poor homeless) 250 hours, and spanish honors society 9-12. I applied to Duke, Stanford, Upenn, Umich SAFE, Colombia, Goergetown, and i was thinking about Harvard but im not sure. Please tell me my chances at all those schools, and any other suggestions too please

Your stats are better than mine, and i got in at UMich, so that's a good safety...

Umm.. Georgetown, Columbia , you should be in pretty easily.
For Stanford, Duke, and UPenn, it's basically whether or not they're looking for someone like you the particular day they look at your app, but you definitely fit their profile. You should probably get in at least one of those places.

But if your essays for any of those schools included the phrase "i'm one of those kids who has just about everything," i would reject you right off. :) I'm sure you used something a little more positive and enlightening for your essays, right?

By Crnchycereal (Crnchycereal) on Wednesday, March 03, 2004 - 09:53 pm: Edit

It's interesting that you would say he's "in easily" at Columbia, but that it'd be more of a tossup for Penn. Last time I checked, Columbia was more competitive. His ECs are good, but they are not spectacular; the only thing that stands out is his position as president. If everything else was listed as mere participation without significant accomplishments, then not even Georgetown will be "easy" for him. In all honesty, you seem like a cookie-cutter applicant for the top schools, but you're probably stronger than most. I'd give you a good shot at most, though Stanford, as always, will be a complete crapshoot.

My friend had awesome stats (1580 SAT, high gpa in private high school) but he got deferred from Columbia because his lack of ECs...My other friend from the same school might have had slightly lower stats, but had much more ECs. He's Columbia Class of '08.

You have good stats, but your spelling skills are similar to those of a monkey.

By Flyguy (Flyguy) on Wednesday, March 03, 2004 - 11:39 pm: Edit

The Lawrenceville School?

Agreed.

Um, is it just me that finds this post somewhat fishy? You were thinking about Harvard but you're not sure? Asking for more suggestions? It's a little late, my friend to be thinking of applying to Harvard now. Also, I don't know anyone who has those kinds of stats who has such atrocious spelling.

By Hannah86 (Hannah86) on Thursday, March 04, 2004 - 12:32 am: Edit

who cares about his stupid spelling people. get over it..

anyways, your stats are amazing. you must be a real go-getter.

By Amarsn (Amarsn) on Thursday, March 04, 2004 - 06:44 am: Edit

my bad, UPenn isn't as competitive as Columbia.

(sheepish grin)

By Najy (Najy) on Thursday, March 04, 2004 - 06:50 am: Edit

Go for Harvard, why the hell not? It's on the common app and you have as good of a shot as any other applicant...provided your essays are really really good. You never know!

By Gianscolere (Gianscolere) on Thursday, March 04, 2004 - 09:12 am: Edit

"Um, is it just me that finds this post somewhat fishy?" -matth

matth: maybe he put down that he's not sure about harvard because he doesn't want to sound overly presumptuous by assuming that he would have a chance. as you know, cc posters still bash people who clearly have a chance.

or he simply predicted what his stats would be like at the time of application, and wants to get evaluated based on these stats...so he can work on improving it for next year.

yes, matth, you are probably the only one who thinks the original post is fishy

By Matth (Matth) on Thursday, March 04, 2004 - 09:22 am: Edit

Gianscolere,

Just one question then, why did he say he'd already applied if he's a junior? And he's predicting he'll be varsity and class president NEXT year? Right. Notice how he hasn't responded to the question of what school it is? If it's the one I'm thinking of, then it's definitely a fictional post because I know for a fact that some of that information can't be true. Some of you are pretty naive.

By Gianscolere (Gianscolere) on Thursday, March 04, 2004 - 10:36 am: Edit

like i said, he's probably trying to predict what his chances would be if he had applied with the stats he posted. he wants to know, for example, if his admission chances could be improved upon if he works towards becoming a varsity athlete and class president for next year.

i know lawrenceville, and i find it highly unlikely for a student like him to effortlessly coast through all his high school years there, unless lawrenceville's reputation for being a hard school is overrated. the original post is fictional in the sense that he could be making up these stats, but his objective, i think, is merely to get a sense of what his chances would be if he were to attain such standing. if he does indeed attend lawrenceville, maybe his goals are just unrealistic. or if he doesn't attend lawrenceville, he doesn't have a clear sense of how hard that school truly is. or maybe he's just trying to see how competitive his lawrenceville (or prep school) counterpart would prove to be in the college admissions process.

holeinone- playing with our minds, are you? i take no offense but please just say it if you are

By Kyu (Kyu) on Thursday, March 04, 2004 - 05:06 pm: Edit

i think u have big chances... i am applying for harvard too so good luck

By Zephyrmaster (Zephyrmaster) on Thursday, March 04, 2004 - 05:31 pm: Edit

Looks fishy to me too. Peir? I'm not that smart, but I mean... fo' rizzeal?

By Holeinone82 (Holeinone82) on Thursday, March 04, 2004 - 10:14 pm: Edit

ok i dont go to Larwenceville or whatever it is that you guys said. I spell horrible because i have a major case of dislexia that i am able to get around by hard work and dedication. I go to newark academy, and we already had class elections for next year mr. know it alls who think im lieing. the reason also i alreay applied is because i already completed all hgihscohol credits because i was moved up in some classes during middle school. I took a grade hgiher of each class each year. So thanks everybody that doubted me. and to those that stuck up for me and gave me good advice, thanks guys i can tell you are the cool ones.

By Holeinone82 (Holeinone82) on Thursday, March 04, 2004 - 10:28 pm: Edit

htanks kyu, good luck to you too, and zephyrmaster F*** YOU LOSER...Matth, you think your so smart, well honestly your not you just dont give people a chance, just because im going to make it, and be a successful man, ddoesnt mean you can critize all ive worked past in my life. hannah86, thanks bud i really appreciate it. najy, and amarson thankyou for the seriuos responses i appreciate it.

By Matth (Matth) on Thursday, March 04, 2004 - 10:42 pm: Edit

Class elections for next year and it's only early March? Forgive my skepticism. If you're a year ahead, and you've applied to colleges, then why, may I ask, are you class president for next year? My best buddy is dyslexic and it doesn't cause the kinds of spelling and grammar errors that you're making. My opinion stands that the whole thing is fishy, but whatever floats your boat.

By Zephyrmaster (Zephyrmaster) on Friday, March 05, 2004 - 01:02 am: Edit

zephyrmaster F*** YOU LOSER...

Umm.... yes... you are intelligent aren't you! A bright one, quick to cuss... seesh. This post seems a little fishy, I said that, and you cuss? Haha, I'm the loser... classic....

But whatever you want, I really don't care! :)

By Mzhang23 (Mzhang23) on Friday, March 05, 2004 - 01:50 am: Edit

The OP is totally sketchy. Dislexia isn't a cause of bad grammar, and your circumstances are just hypocritical (still thinking about Harvard, already applied yet elected President for next year)...

By Iamwat (Iamwat) on Saturday, March 06, 2004 - 03:48 am: Edit

I agree....pretty shady there...plus, how do you get a 1540 if you're dyslexic and spell so horribly? For heaven's sake, you can't even spell dyslexic right! People who boast like you and spell like you at the same time don't really have those kinds of stats...it's a matter of common sense. And if you're actually for real and you do get in somewhere like Harvard, may god help your soul, for you will not survive college with grammar like that.

By Mattman (Mattman) on Saturday, March 06, 2004 - 11:13 am: Edit

by the way, it's not "peir to peir tutoring" it's peer-to-peer. Hehe, we can't all be great spellers.
