CalTech is one of the top schools in the nation...to my recollection, something like 99% of their freshman class graduated from hs in the top 10% of their classes. And their mid-50% SAT scores = 1470-1580 (when a science-oriented school has 25% of their students with 780+ on the VERBAL section, you know they're competitive). So basically, you could be *all that and a bag of chips* and all you have is a lottery ticked (= get some safeties, too!!).

For Caltech, it seems that super-high SAT scores are a prerequisite.

Caltech actually had admitted s student with a 450 Verbal, and one with 650 on Math. Source was from Caltech's admissions page.

But these students probably had to be Intel STS semifinalists with such poor scores.
