I'm in state, and i applied for mccombs business school, and the natural sciences school.
rank: 66/515
SAT: 700 verbal 710 math
EC: officer of 3 clubs, member of many others
150 hours of community service
very well written essays and excellent recommendation letters.
my only concern is the top 10% rule. i'm afraid almost all of the spots will be filled up by students who were admitted by the rule.
By Cybernetica (Cybernetica) on Sunday, February 29, 2004 - 09:59 pm: Edit
yeah i'm sort of in the same boat as you, ranked 150th in my class (though I passed up like 40 people to get there this semester, lol) out of about 600, but with slightly higher scores than you.
The UT-Austin top 10% rule definitely sucks, but I mean if they were JUST going on the numbers why ask for all of that extra info, you know?
The process is nowhere near as exposed publically as that of more "elite" institutions, so I don't know many who could give you a solid answer. Going to a public hs in TX though, I know many teachers who have been or know someone who was on admissions cmmttees for Dean's Scholar/Plan II/ general admissions...and from what I hear the process isn't that complicated or nuanced.
That is nice to know if you have clearly good numbers all around (i.e. top 5% with SAT score over oh say 1350), but it does sort of suck for trickier admits like ourselves because it means that traditional "safeties" like UTA may not even pay the attention to our other accomplishments that we are betting more elite institutions might give.
I wish you well...we'll find out soon enough.

Good to know someone is in the same position as I am. Let's keep each other updated on our status.
Also, which sub-schools did you apply to? what were your test scores?
By Silverfish (Silverfish) on Sunday, February 29, 2004 - 11:54 pm: Edit
hmmm...I have my eyes on UT as well...but not being in top 10% does not destroy your chances of going there, at least that holds true for Business. I just went to their website about Business major (b/c that's what I am interested in), and it states that going from top 1% (and then top2%, 3%, 4% ...ect), 75% of all they're gonna accept will be filled; the rest of top 10% and those not in top 10% will compete for the rest 25% of the room they have
sorry if I'm being unclear...not very good at explaining this...but you can always go to their website and find out :P
By Cjd (Cjd) on Monday, March 01, 2004 - 06:32 pm: Edit
Yes it goes all the 1%s, then all the 2%s(of the top 10% of instate kids), and so on until the first 75% of the entering class is filled, then all the rest of the top 10%(instate kids) are thrown into the mix with the regular instate kids and everyone else who applies and they fight it out for the other 25%,which i hear is only like 300-400 spots....
CaptCalc-- I think you're in for sure anywhere except business, and there you would still have a descent shot.
Cybernetica- if you have better scores i tihnk you're in too.....i wish i was an instate kid, should have never moved away from Houston.
I applied to McCombs business, but i'm from out of state-- so i'm screwed, 3.96GPA, 29ACT, first gen college student, many ECs, and lots of work experience...is there hope?
By Captcalculus (Captcalculus) on Monday, March 01, 2004 - 08:27 pm: Edit
what is your high school rank? that is more important than GPA to them.
By Cjd (Cjd) on Tuesday, March 02, 2004 - 03:13 pm: Edit
like 18/265 its like top 6.7%
By Captcalculus (Captcalculus) on Tuesday, March 02, 2004 - 03:58 pm: Edit
dont think you'll cut it for business, but most likely one of the other schools.
By Cjd (Cjd) on Tuesday, March 02, 2004 - 07:46 pm: Edit
yeah, it sucks too, that was my #1 choice, if not business then i'm not going.. I'll probably end up at U of Georgia or VT honors program if i get in.
By Timmy19th (Timmy19th) on Tuesday, March 02, 2004 - 11:16 pm: Edit
You have much better chances than I do...
RANK: 104/470, top 20%
GPA:3.1
SAT: 1040
Prospective Major #1: Radio/Television/Film
Prospective Major #2: Liberal Arts Undecided
I wrote some really good and emotional essays that I think might make the AdCom cry, but I doubt I'll get in though.
By Captcalculus (Captcalculus) on Wednesday, March 03, 2004 - 02:01 am: Edit
According to thatsame adcom lady i talked to, Radio television film was the most competitive major. she siad, "Even Speilberg would have had a hard time getting in."
ontop of that, your SAT is 200 points or so below the school avg.
but they typically take top 25% kids, so you have a shot.

If i were to go to UT, say even if i didn't get into the Business program, what are the chances of transferring into it after freshmen year
By Timmy19th (Timmy19th) on Wednesday, March 03, 2004 - 04:19 pm: Edit
Yeah, that sucks that RTF is the most competitive major. Spielberg got rejected from USC and had to go to Cal State at Long Beach so I'll know how he felt if I get rejected by UT.

does anyone else's online status say "we have received all crednetials required for your application" instead of the admissions committee is reviewing your application?
By Timmy19th (Timmy19th) on Saturday, March 06, 2004 - 10:32 am: Edit
my online status says "We have received all credentials that are required to review and process your application. The Admissions Committee is currently reviewing your application for admission. Once we reach a decision you will be notified by mail. "

Mine says:
"We have received all credentials that are required to review and process your application. The Admissions Committee is currently reviewing your application for admission. Once we reach a decision you will be notified by mail. "
By Captcalculus (Captcalculus) on Saturday, March 06, 2004 - 12:50 pm: Edit
ok. mine is back to that now. that was weird. also, on the little box on th eleft, does the link direct you to the first choice school? mine did before, and now that it went idle from reviewal and now it is back again, the link is for my second school choice. my application fee status is also covered now instead of paid..maybe i dint make my first choice.
By Collegeprospect (Collegeprospect) on Saturday, March 06, 2004 - 05:52 pm: Edit
Oh wow, now instead of College of Natural Sciences on the left, it says College of Liberal Arts. Does that mean I didn't make my top 2 choices? And my app. fee says covered as well, instead of paid.
By Captcalculus (Captcalculus) on Saturday, March 06, 2004 - 06:13 pm: Edit
same boat as you..beats me.
what are your stats?
it very well may be, because i know liberal arts is the automatic third try.
By Timmy19th (Timmy19th) on Saturday, March 06, 2004 - 07:53 pm: Edit
Wow, mine says College of Liberal Arts (my second choice) on the left instead of College of Communications (my first choice). I guess I got rejected for Radio/Television/Film. I'll be lucky if I get in for Liberal Arts Undeclared.
By Barbara913 (Barbara913) on Sunday, March 07, 2004 - 08:52 pm: Edit
can you guys help me out
applying lib. arts and sciences
ACT - 29
SAT 550 verb. 630 math
3.86 gpa on 5.0 scale, (weighted ?)
lots of activities, already got into wisconsin, had good essays and good recommend. letter
anyone know if i have a shot ?
By Cjd (Cjd) on Sunday, March 07, 2004 - 09:37 pm: Edit
Instead of a business link i now have liberal arts link....nooooo
By Captcalculus (Captcalculus) on Sunday, March 07, 2004 - 09:55 pm: Edit
maybe it is a standard routine..and we're worrying about nothing. i've ntoiced all of ours show liberal arts now. CJD, what are your stats? us who have lib arts arent exactly surefire admits. so if you are, that will add more pieces to reason with here.

How about me? Any chances for UT Austin School of Communications? At this point I'd be happy with Liberal Arts even as long as I am not rejected or sent to one of the smaller UT schools for a year...
3.8 GPA
5th out of 31 (Top 16%) at college prep school
1290 SATs (710- Verbal / 580- Math)
Several AP and Honors Courses
President of Student Council Soph & Senior Class
Editor of School Newspaper (senior year)
President of Interact (comm. service club) -Senior Year
Varsity Tennis
Member of Drama Club, Spanish Club, German Club, Journalism Club, etc.
4th place in state wide UIL essay contest
and other academic awards...
good letters of recommendation, including one from my Journalism teacher and strong (I think) essays
BTW- I'm a Texas resident as well
By Cjd (Cjd) on Monday, March 08, 2004 - 12:11 pm: Edit
i'm by no means surefire for business... 29 ACT, 3.96 GPA, well written essays, out-of-state, great ECs and work experience, first gen college student.
By Captcalculus (Captcalculus) on Monday, March 08, 2004 - 04:27 pm: Edit
update:
i talked to an admissions person today, and the link changing on the side does infact denote the committee currently reviewing your application. So, if it is not your first or second choice, you did not make it to those schools. The third automatic try is liberal arts undeclared. I guess i didnt' make business school or natural sciences.
By Timmy19th (Timmy19th) on Monday, March 08, 2004 - 04:41 pm: Edit
Ouch Captcalculus, I guess I still have a small chance of getting in for Liberal Arts Undeclared, but I doubt it will happen.
For those of you wondering about your chances of getting in....I heard someone in-state and in a public school with a GPA of 3.5 and SAT score of 1390 got rejected from UT. He was not in the top 10% of his class.
By Cjd (Cjd) on Monday, March 08, 2004 - 06:31 pm: Edit
That sucks. I better start looking at my chances at the other two schools i'm considering.
Did one here get into anything except Liberal Arts>?
By Timmy19th (Timmy19th) on Monday, March 08, 2004 - 08:02 pm: Edit

NEVER MIND, I JUST GOT MY ACCEPTANCE STATUS ONLINE! AND TO MY FIRST CHOICE SCHOOL: COLLEGE OF COMMUNICATIONS!!!!!!! WOOHOO!!
And to those who are curious- the link on the sidebar of my status page did stay "college of communications" up until the very end, so it might possibly be indicator.
By Timmy19th (Timmy19th) on Monday, March 08, 2004 - 10:10 pm: Edit
Josimcy, where did it show that you were accepted?? Which major under College of Communications were you accepted for?
By Captcalculus (Captcalculus) on Monday, March 08, 2004 - 10:30 pm: Edit
congrats josimcy. you're very fortunate
By Orangeclock (Orangeclock) on Monday, March 08, 2004 - 10:56 pm: Edit
congrats josimcy. When did they decide?
Captcalculus:
Is the link you are talking about under "Naviagtion Menu"? The first link under "Navigation Menu" is "college of engineering" for me. Does that mean they are currently considering me for COE?
By Sammileah (Sammileah) on Monday, March 08, 2004 - 11:20 pm: Edit
WAIT SO are you guys sure that the navigation link is correct? Mine says College of Liberal Arts and i applied to engineering...i think i'll cry if this is true.

I clicked to see my status and it said "Congratulations! You have been accepted to your first choice school, the College of Communications at the University of Texas at Austin" and then there were instructions on what to do next for enrolling.
I selected "pre-journalism" as my major- I'm still so thankful!

What....does the link really indicate our current status? I would be really sad that I couldn't make it to mccombs nor college of engineering....coz now my links direct to college of liberal arts...
and..I think i would have a pretty good shot at first..SAT : 1330, SAT2 : 800math 2c/780 phy/740 writing...taking IB courses...with 40 performance as well as predicted...and i'm applying as a texas resident..
gosh...wht's wrong with them...who can help me?
By Cjd (Cjd) on Tuesday, March 09, 2004 - 03:04 pm: Edit
Timmy, i'm not a texas resident so UT was my only texas school. I applied to UVA- no way i got in there. GWU- pretty sure i'm in, but too freakin expensive. UGA- Ill probably end up here. American- again too expensive and finally Virginia Tech- only going if i got into Honors program.
By Orangeclock (Orangeclock) on Tuesday, March 09, 2004 - 06:12 pm: Edit
Even though you can send AP's and SATII's, i have heard they wont be considered for admissions.
I just got admitted to the COE, second choice major of petroleum engineering.
When the decision comes in it will be on the column at the left of your homepage and it will say:
"We've reached a decision about your admission to UT Austin. Get all the details."

mine are
class rank about 180/580
GPA - 3.3 or 3.4 unweighted on 4.0 scale
94% of 100 as my school calculates it (weighted)
750 math 730 verbal, second time
very weak ECs - joined 4 clubs senior year just for show, must have been obvious to reviewers.

just the final, its the average of all your GPAs from 9th-11th (12th sometimes if u turn your rank in late)

for those of you who are freaking out -- i'm a UT grad -- i hope those of ya'll who are waiting to hear back, hear back soon. my brother had to do summer session at UT last year and his stats were awesome. 1400 SAT, high GPA (11th percentile and it was that b/c he had transfered into his highschool in 10th grade from a different school that didn't have all honors classes for freshmen...so his GPA was weighted down from the get-go). Anyway, both my sister and I are UT grads and he was SO upset about having to do summer school --- but he ended up having the time of his life last summer at UT...met awesome people, made the transition to college SO much easier...and came out with three A's from summer session. I'm only saying this b/c i think a lot of ya'll are probably not going to make it in under the normal admissions process (no offense--just being realistic - the top 10% rule SUCKS and turns away many really talented students) -- so if you are faced with having to do summer school, don't be depressed and freak out. You'll love it. My brother got into Emory and Wash U in St Louis and decided to do summer school at UT instead. He doesn't regret that decision at all -- UT's an incredible school (with a crappy admissions process right now). GOOD LUCK GUYS. enjoy the rest of your senior years. wherever you end up -- you'll LOVE it -- college is great. Just go into it with a positive attitude.

UTgrad- Your brother, what was his major?
By Utgrad2002 (Utgrad2002) on Thursday, March 11, 2004 - 11:02 am: Edit
sammileah -- he applied as a math major in the school of natural sciences. i can tell you a few things that seemed true about last year's admission's process ----- People who applied in October and November and had MUCH lower SAT scores than my brother (like 150 pts lower) and their class ranks were lower as well, made it in. It seems as if when you turned it in was crucial IF you're not in the top 10%. The top 10% rule just doesn't allow for very many non-top 10% people to make it in. For those of you who are concerned about not making it into your top choice college (i.e business will be really hard, communications is hard, RTV is hard....)....you can always transfer after your first year. Once you are in the school, it's much easier to transfer around.....just make sure to make really good grades your first semester. And, again--if any of you are faced with summer school --- let me give you some insight -- you have to take 3 classes --- they are core classes and not too difficult -- you get to be in austin during the summer (which is awesome!).... you'll meet about 200 people before your other friends even start college..... you'll get three classes out of the way, which means you can lighten up your load a bit in the fall, which is VERY helpful. And you get to party all summer long. seriously, last year at this time my brother got the news that he had to do summer school -- it was not a happy time at our house -- he was SO upset and it made no sense b/c he had made it into emory and wash u...which are considered better schools. he LOVED summer school -- so if you are faced with it, i'd highly consider it. I hope ya'll make it in!!!!!!!

By Timmy19th (Timmy19th) on Thursday, March 11, 2004 - 12:13 pm: Edit
Utgrad....
Do you think it would be hard to transfer from UNT to UT??
Also...If I were to do the summer program...Does UT accept you but tell you in your acceptance letter you have to go to summer school? Or Do you go to the summer school then apply again after summer school is over??
By Utgrad2002 (Utgrad2002) on Thursday, March 11, 2004 - 12:31 pm: Edit
I don't know how to answer the transfer question. Make good grades, give it a shot. I think it's probably easier to transfer from another branch within the Texas system - UT-Arlington, UT-San Antonio, etc..... b/c you just need to meet the minimum GPA and you are automatically in. I'm not sure what standards UT-Austin puts on transfers.
Regarding summer school... When UT notifies you, you will get one of three things....1. Congrats you've been accepted into the Fall Class of 2004. 2. Congrats you've been accepted into the Summer Class of 2004. 3. Thank you for applying to UT-Austin, unfortunately due to the large number of applicants blah blah blah we cannot offer you a spot in our 2004 incoming freshman class. You can choose another Texas branch school to go to and then transfer your second year if you maintain a 3.??? GPA. If you are offered summer school, you've been accepted..you just HAVE to start in June......you are NOT on provisional...there is not a minimum GPA that you have to maintain...you are a full student, just required to start in June.

HEY GUYS!! just an update...
I GOT INTO UT TODAY!!!
i was so worried i wouldn't, and i also had that college of liberal arts link when i didnt even apply to it.
I found out today that i got into civil engineering!
here's what is says on the website now:
"Congratulations! You've been admitted to your first-choice major, the College of Engineering, at UT Austin. Discover more about your admission and find out what to do next to begin your Longhorn experience. You will also need to be sure to fulfill the special math requirements for all engineering majors. We invite you to join the Longhorn tradition and hope to see you soon. "
Also, I'm a female only in the top 15% (from a high ranking huge public school) in texas...
1320 SAT
good essays
lots of extras. (not so much TONS of volunteer work, but very involved in community with politics)
YAYYY I AM OVERJOYED. dont give up guys!! i was seriously about to cry earlier... haha
P.S. THE website link changed to "college of engineering" =)

I had a notice on my status that there was an error and to call the office for my status. After I called, they said the error was a mistake and that no one was notified outside of the 10% rule as of yesterday.. Wierd...
By Captcalculus (Captcalculus) on Friday, March 19, 2004 - 05:54 pm: Edit
some people who got in on this thread are out of the top 10%, weird.
By Emyh (Emyh) on Friday, March 19, 2004 - 11:40 pm: Edit
Gah.. I had an error on my status too... I called and someone said it was a computer glitch and told me to call another office.. and I did... and they said there was no error. UT better tell me soon, I've been checking my status like every day, and I'm really tired of waiting
By Timmy19th (Timmy19th) on Saturday, March 20, 2004 - 01:07 am: Edit
Yeah, I've been checking my online status three times a day....give us the decision already!
By Captcalculus (Captcalculus) on Saturday, March 20, 2004 - 02:03 am: Edit
what'd they do all week if no one heard from them...
By Timmy19th (Timmy19th) on Saturday, March 20, 2004 - 04:54 am: Edit
Wow, according to Princeton Review, UTD has a a higher SAT average than UT....
The University of Texas at Austin: 1230
The University of Texas at Dallas: 1231
By Sammileah (Sammileah) on Saturday, March 20, 2004 - 07:48 am: Edit
i think its because UTD has a really competitive comp sci program, but its much easier to get into than UT. Oh, and i was non-top 10% and i heard from them, so have my friends, but keep in mind this is spring break week at UT so i'm sure a lot of adcoms are taking the week off. hehe =)

Hi,there.I am an international student applying to UT-Austin.Yesterday was a total disaster.I was rejected by UT-Austin.I think I have good stats:Verbal,590,Maths,800,real nice recommendations, carefully planned essays, marvelous TOEFL scores, quite a lot of awards and activities, absolutely top 10%...Sigh...I guess I wasn't even considered for my second major choice which is Business Unspecified before I got rejected from Chemical Engineering major. This is my first rejection. Then came UW-Madison.A total disaster for me.Wanna read the rejection letter? Here it goes:"After careful review of applications from a highly competitive pool, the Admissions Committee at UT Austin is not able to offer you admission at this time. Approximately three times as many students apply each year as we are able to enroll."The reason why I didn't collapse is that I got admission from University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign and Michigan State, which is my safety school.I also got an offer from Tulane.Guys, good luck with your application.Me still waiting for news from Emory and Washington in St.Louis.

sammileah, have any of your friends who have been accepted matriculated in liberal arts?
By Sammileah (Sammileah) on Saturday, March 20, 2004 - 04:31 pm: Edit
Not that i know of. Here's where my friends got in:
one person: Top 3%- business school
2nd: Top 15%- Natural sciences (applied business)
3rd: Top 7%- engineering (applied comm.)
4th: top 15%- natural sciences
we're all tx. residents
By Captcalculus (Captcalculus) on Saturday, March 20, 2004 - 05:25 pm: Edit
wow i guess i didnt make natural sciences.i finished turning in my application on the last day...
By Sammileah (Sammileah) on Saturday, March 20, 2004 - 06:29 pm: Edit
I definitely wouldn't say that Captcalculus, you have excellent stats!
I think you have a fantastic chance....
I have another friend who HASNT heard yet, she's in top 14% with a 1310 SAT and shes doing natural sciences also, so there is no need to worry! They really aren't releasing acceptances in any order, you have nothing to worry about =)
good luck!

For those of you that chose the College of Liberal Arts as their first or second choice school...what did you choose as your major? I picked Liberal Arts Undecided which I'm really hoping will get me in.
By Captcalculus (Captcalculus) on Monday, March 22, 2004 - 03:48 am: Edit
hmm you shouldnt have done that, i think the automatic third choice is liberal arts undecided.
By Captcalculus (Captcalculus) on Monday, March 22, 2004 - 04:36 pm: Edit
have any of you guys heard? how ridiculous
By Cjd (Cjd) on Monday, March 22, 2004 - 06:15 pm: Edit
Under financial aid app. status mine says. "We were unable to process this application." What's going on?.. Everything was perfect on it, i'm not even gonna bother with it now. I'm not getting in at McCombs anyway.
By Captcalculus (Captcalculus) on Monday, March 22, 2004 - 06:31 pm: Edit
on the application status page, under the grid box for financial aid? or at the financial aid page
By Cjd (Cjd) on Monday, March 22, 2004 - 07:17 pm: Edit
grid box..and when i click to go to the page it says theres no app. available for my SS#, which is odd because the link to that page is in the same box that says i do have one. Also, the financial aid listing says completed on the first page after i put my UTID in.
By Sammileah (Sammileah) on Monday, March 22, 2004 - 08:53 pm: Edit
i wouldn't frett about it, sometimes the UT website doesn't work properly...
I still dont know why my site said "college of liberal arts" when i didnt even apply there.
By Timmy19th (Timmy19th) on Monday, March 22, 2004 - 09:58 pm: Edit
Here's a question...
If you get into the top 10% of your high school class by the end of this last semester, will you be automatically accepted to UT next year for a transfer student?? Or do you have to be in the top 10% at the end of your junior year??
By Sammileah (Sammileah) on Monday, March 22, 2004 - 10:37 pm: Edit
Hmm...thats a really good question...i dont think you can be admitted in the Fall after your senior year, but i bet you could apply from spring 2005 admission!
but if you're that close to the top 10%, maybe 11% or 12%, i wouldnt suspect u would get rejected for fall admission if u applied by the required deadline.
Only 50% of UT admittants are in the top 10%, thats a whole 50% that arent.
So thats good!
By Timmy19th (Timmy19th) on Monday, March 22, 2004 - 10:45 pm: Edit
Well, according to princetonreview.com 69% of UT admittants are in the top 10%, that's more than my dream school, NYU, which has 63% of it's admittants in the top 10%
By Sammileah (Sammileah) on Tuesday, March 23, 2004 - 07:24 am: Edit
Ironically, my sister knows someone who got rejected from biomedical engineering(they only accept top 1, 2%) at UT and then got into Harvard.
haha

I GOT INTO UT BY THE CAP PROGRAM!!!!! I'M SO HAPPY!!! I just have to go to UT Arlington for a year and maintain a 3.0 or higher GPA then I'll have automatic acception to UT Austin for my second year. I'll have a degree from UT Austin and it will be the college I graduate from. I'M SO HAPPY THAT I DIDN'T GET FLAT OUT REJECTED!!! WOOHOO!!! GOOD LUCK EVERYONE ELSE!

By Collegeprospect (Collegeprospect) on Wednesday, March 24, 2004 - 05:23 pm: Edit
I got in the summer program as well today. Its gonna be a bitch because it starts June 14th, and my high school grad date is June 19th.
By Emyh (Emyh) on Wednesday, March 24, 2004 - 05:55 pm: Edit
I got into the summer program too... I know I shouldn't feel bad.. but my intelligence definitely feels insulted. And I didn't get into Comm... got stuck w/ Poli Sci instead. Please BU's Comm school is better and I got in. And UT was my "safety." Sorry to hear collegeprospect... and I thought I had it bad only having two weeks off for summer. And I'm really burned out from school and really need that summer...
And anyone realize AP results won't even be out yet? I don't want to be taking a damn class that I already placed out through AP... BOOOO

I am a transfer applicant. I have 60 hours at my community college. GPA 3.26 applying to Liberal Arts - English...what do you think my chances are? I noticed most of you are applying from HS as first-years...so, I'm not sure what you might know about transfer apps??
