Continuing those amazing discussions.. hope there is more peace on this one.
Post away!

By Nci (Nci) on Sunday, February 29, 2004 - 06:40 pm: Edit

Hi Ishan!..I have applied as a freshman..
See u guys later..

By Foreignboy (Foreignboy) on Sunday, February 29, 2004 - 07:20 pm: Edit

Oh no.. please don't merge the international post and the Indian post into one...

To Amarsn from the last thread, yeah I'm a Malaysian citizen. I live right here in KL, and the interview venue was 5 minutes from my house.

By Rashmi (Rashmi) on Sunday, February 29, 2004 - 11:02 pm: Edit

It's okay to merge the two for right now, because most of us Indians don't have much time right now(board examinations). But later on I guess someone will start an Indian Post because we talk a lot of exclusively Indian stuff there and the rest of the world would get totally confused.

By Upandover (Upandover) on Monday, March 01, 2004 - 02:48 am: Edit

Hei foreignboy, how long was your Pton interview? Mine was like 1 hour plus. The interviewer was really late, and mine was scheduled at 3.00pm and only started at 4.30! Well, the others after me had to wait even longer. One girl had to wait like 3 hours!
Who were the other applicants at your interview? There was this girl who finished STPM,another was from TAR, a JPA student(super-snobby!) and another girl who was from Taylors too (I knew she was going) .

Continuing where Rashmi left:
How was Physics?

By Smac86 (Smac86) on Monday, March 01, 2004 - 04:40 am: Edit

PHYSICS sucked. [couldn't finish it]
Paper had an error. Can't believe this stupid board [CBSE] can't find errors in its own frikkin' papers.

By Foreignboy (Foreignboy) on Monday, March 01, 2004 - 06:09 am: Edit

I wasn't wearing a watch, but I think it was about an hour. I was waiting alone, so didn't really have a chance to talk to the other applicants. There were supposed to be two interviewers, but the other one was out of town, which is why everything was behind schedule.
Anyway what did you talk about? (just out of curiosity)

By Rashmi (Rashmi) on Monday, March 01, 2004 - 06:16 am: Edit

Even ISC papers often have errors, but the best part is that students get the benefit of the doubt. As in everyone who attempts that question gets full marks or that's what I've heard.
Isn't it the same with CBSE?

By Amarsn (Amarsn) on Monday, March 01, 2004 - 07:02 am: Edit

how do you arrange for an interview, or do they ocme to you if their interested. (for princeton?)
and, i live in Penang

By Rohit_Sn (Rohit_Sn) on Monday, March 01, 2004 - 07:37 am: Edit

boards starting on march 30. karnataka state board. i hope i do well.

By Foreignboy (Foreignboy) on Monday, March 01, 2004 - 08:30 am: Edit

If it is possible to arrange an interview, the local alumnus/a in charge is supposed to contact you. I'm not sure why you weren't called up, and my interviewer did mention that she had seen people from Penang.
Interviews aren't compulsory, but if you are really interested, I suggest you contact the university itself. Just be quick about it, because the adcom meetings are already starting.

By Acennace (Acennace) on Monday, March 01, 2004 - 11:52 am: Edit

Abhijeet - yea the email states the same thing. *freefalling confidence...*

By Abhijeet (Abhijeet) on Monday, March 01, 2004 - 12:07 pm: Edit

Acennace,
not all of my friends who applied to UVa got that letter. So it must mean sth. special.

no more freefalls i hope!

Hello World

By Upandover (Upandover) on Monday, March 01, 2004 - 06:37 pm: Edit

Hi legolas.

Foreignboy,
About Geology (that's what I am taking), darn it, she asked me really indepth questions.. I think I want to cry.. And about writing, about my role models and about where else I have applied to.

What did she ask you?

Amarsn,
there was a girl also from Penang who came down for the interview. The interviewer has to contact you first.

By Foreignboy (Foreignboy) on Tuesday, March 02, 2004 - 02:11 am: Edit

A lot about architecture, where else I applied, politics (just came up out of nowhere), about why their architectural firm is named after Harvard's motto... (seems the other partner went to H grad school) Had quite a good time. I think we just had a lot in common.

Anyone got any decisions yet? I just got my decision from Colgate University - I've been accepted, as a Alumni Memorial Scholar, i.e. among the top 200 applicants. It's got $5000 in support in research. It came in a fat envelope, and was also my first acceptance with a car sticker in it! Anyone else got their RD decisions? How are the boards going, everyone?

By Kshroff1 (Kshroff1) on Friday, March 05, 2004 - 05:17 am: Edit

I've been accepted at Umich and UIUC so far...
waiting for other decisions

By Upandover (Upandover) on Friday, March 05, 2004 - 05:35 am: Edit

I think I want to cry..... Congrats Longhorn! But it shows that I really really am an worthless applicant. =( no likely letters or acceptance yet.

By Rashmi (Rashmi) on Friday, March 05, 2004 - 07:08 am: Edit

Kersi- Seeing you here after a long time. Congrats!!

Longhorn- I'm feeling totally worthless too!!
Congrats dude :)

By Longhorn (Longhorn) on Friday, March 05, 2004 - 07:17 am: Edit

Nah.. we all will be feeling much better by mid-april. But it really is a big relief to get an acceptance early on. Best of luck for the boards.

By Foreignboy (Foreignboy) on Friday, March 05, 2004 - 07:51 am: Edit

Congratulations, Longhorn. Btw, what do you mean by $5000 support in research?
The rest of you, you'll all get into good schools. Don't worry.

By Longhorn (Longhorn) on Friday, March 05, 2004 - 10:01 am: Edit

well.. that's $5000 funding for research if the student plans to pursue a research project. That's apart from the usual financial aid package.

By Longhorn (Longhorn) on Friday, March 05, 2004 - 10:01 am: Edit

Thanks foreignboy. well.. that's $5000 funding for research if the student plans to pursue a research project. That's apart from the usual financial aid package.

I heard Physics CBSE sucked big time!!!
also 3 ppl. commited suicide so far!!

1 in the Gulf, 2 in India

I bet u guys didnt find it that difficult ;),
anyways best of luck for upcoming exams & college admisions

By Foreignboy (Foreignboy) on Saturday, March 06, 2004 - 10:44 pm: Edit

Is it normal to be able to gauge the difficulty of your exams by how many people kill themselves??

By Raunak00 (Raunak00) on Saturday, March 06, 2004 - 11:12 pm: Edit

well........the physics wasnt that bad but yeah..it was a little difficult.

By Longhorn (Longhorn) on Sunday, March 07, 2004 - 03:41 am: Edit

Cooldude, that's pretty bad news, considering that the main cause for the suicides must have been the wrongly printed question. Many thought it was a trick question and wasted time solving it. A little care in the processing of the question papers could have saved at least 1 of these 3 people's lives.

By Longhorn (Longhorn) on Sunday, March 07, 2004 - 03:42 am: Edit

just forgot.. HAPPY HOLI EVERYONE!! Best of luck for Boards and hope all of us get into our dream colleges.

By Kshroff1 (Kshroff1) on Sunday, March 07, 2004 - 04:57 am: Edit

I don't think that one question is to blame for all those suicides. I mean...people who commit suiucide over a paper(although I can't understand how and why anyone could even think of doing that) are the ones who're sure they're gonna fail the paper (<23/70), to whom that one question is highly unlikely to have made a major difference. Not the 65/70 lot...who might get upset because their expectations were lowered to a 63.....
and this morbid topic aside...Happy Holi!!

By Foreignboy (Foreignboy) on Sunday, March 07, 2004 - 05:36 am: Edit

It's not the fault of one wrong question that those people committed suicide. If people take exams so seriously that they kill themselves for not doing well, then something is seriously wrong with society. People have to realize that academics aren't the ONLY THING THAT MATTERS in their 75 years of existence. (give or take a couple of years)

By Way2usa (Way2usa) on Sunday, March 07, 2004 - 07:03 am: Edit

Happy Holi to all of you..

And Happy Holidays to all the students from Maharashtra board.. :)

Btw, what heading (or is it not necessary?) did you give to your recommendation letters?

By Desertrose (Desertrose) on Sunday, March 07, 2004 - 09:00 am: Edit

someone from ajman (for ppl not familiar with UAE, its an emirate (city)

By Cooldude (Cooldude) on Sunday, March 07, 2004 - 12:15 pm: Edit

sorry double post

By Longhorn (Longhorn) on Sunday, March 07, 2004 - 01:34 pm: Edit

Guess everyone's quite right. No one would kill themselves for only one question, but it could have been that people who wasted time on the question didnt get time to solve other questions that they could have. But a single question or single paper is no reason for suicide. Come to think of it, nothing really is.

How was your maths, guys?? I should have scored 100, but I screwed up in one 6 marks question.

By Desertrose (Desertrose) on Thursday, March 11, 2004 - 08:36 am: Edit

Maths was good.. i just pray the others r in the same suit !

By Longhorn (Longhorn) on Thursday, March 11, 2004 - 08:54 am: Edit

The boards are killing this thread... but that's a good thing because it means people are studying hard. So, who else is waiting for the decisions?

Er, everyone?

I know. just striking conversation with the empty space.

By Foreignboy (Foreignboy) on Thursday, March 11, 2004 - 09:24 am: Edit

Ah, yes. Although I have a ton of math HW to do, I find myself glued to the computer by some unknown force.

Let's play a game: We all have to say something about ourselves, but the # of things we say has to be in increasing order.
That is, the first person says 1 thing, the second person says 2 things, the 3rd person says 3 things, etc...

I'll go first.

1. I have 5 dogs. Yay!

Ok... continuing with the game.
1) I don't even have a single dog.
2) I've always wanted one, but my dear father has always been very clear about what he wanted. He said, "You can either have your papa or a puppy". Needless to say that I chose my father ;-) :)
3) Foreignboy, you must let me have one from the very next litter. I'd love to smuggle one to College . :)

Ishan:

How is the batch from DpsRkp this year?
Like any stellars/sureshots or anyone with great achievements/stats or excellent applications?
In short, anyone with a great chance?

By Longhorn (Longhorn) on Friday, March 12, 2004 - 07:34 am: Edit

Ishan: there was also this guy Aurojit Panda from your school - where is he now? He also had some great EC's and stuff.

By Ishan (Ishan) on Friday, March 12, 2004 - 02:47 pm: Edit

I dont really know, since I am not in rkp any longer. However, what I have heard is that one of the two head girls is thru at upenn. Dunno much about the rest. I dont think anyone stunnning is applying to mit/caltech.

I mean there are some fancy ppl in this batch. one inmo chap, in our comp club and one imo chap silver medal from dps noida. I know the inmo chap isint applying for sure (iit). The imo chap was also into iit so I dont know for sure, although it doesnt seem like he is applying.

But then again, since I am not in school this is very sketchy and hence quite unrealible info.

Longhorn
He's still here. he is considering going to queens this year or ubc or mcgill (if he get thru at mcgill, he is thru at the others). He is also waiting for us univ results. He'll decide when all the results are in.

Yea.. so was Dravid. Did you see the last catch? Kaif probably broke the nose of the other player.. I think. If not, it must've been a miracle because you could almost see the second guy's head right close to Kaif's knee... ouch!

Why do these matches always hit during the boards? Last year the world cup was on during my boards... huge distraction.

Hi all, nice to see such a splurge of posts on the thread.. I haven't received anything from MIT yet.. don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing. I'll know by tomorrow for sure.. and will let you know. Congrats Nci and Tonguelash! See you in MIT (If I get in). Ishan.. I feel sorry for you, especially since we all believed you would get through. I'm sure lots of other colleges would have red carpets for your arrival, though, with so many olympiads and what not. Best of luck to everyone..

BTW, the match was excellent, no matter that we lost. It makes us even with Pakistan, which is a good thing because this is a friendly cricket match, not a war. But I still feel that luck favored Pakistan in the end and India could've easily won, had it not been for that well-timed last wicket. This series sure must be a big distraction for all of you writing the Boards.. with so much excitement and 300+ runs per inning!

Good for ya,the one!I got a friend who applied for MIT also but got rejected. He got similar SAT marks as you do without an international prize in science.I really felt bad for him.I got rejected by UT-Austin and UW-Madison.Sigh...The reason why I didn't collapse is that I was admitted into University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign in early February.I also got an offer from Tulane University.Sigh...Two rejection letters!Me still waiting for news from Emory and Washington in St.Louis.By the way,I am from China.Anyone else here from China?Guys, good luck with your application.

Waitlisted at Washington U. in St. Louis

By Zhou (Zhou) on Saturday, March 20, 2004 - 09:33 pm: Edit

Me waitlisted at Washington in St.Louis as well.It seems that a lot of people are waitlisted. There's not much hope for being picked out from the waitlist because WUSTL only picked out 23 or so from its waitlist.Sigh...

By Foreignboy (Foreignboy) on Saturday, March 20, 2004 - 11:24 pm: Edit

I think you still have hope for WUSTL.
The adcoms won't bother going through the whole waitlist again since everyone on it is obviously qualified. They'll just try to pick out the ones who are genuinely interested in their school.

By Zhou (Zhou) on Sunday, March 21, 2004 - 02:54 am: Edit

Even they pick me out of the waiting list,I won't qualify for financial assistance, which secluded my last chance of getting into WUSTL.Sigh...Maybe I will end up somewhere in Tulane,Emory or UIUC.

Hi guys..intl. from UK here.. anyone getting rejected at all of their safeties by the minute? I got in at my match schools but not at my safeties.. funny. I've been following your Indian threads for a lot of time. Rashmi, Ishan, where else did you get in? Congrats Upandover!

I don't think people should naively believe everything on this board.. like these posters who get admitted before reply dates and get likely letters from Harvard!makes me LMFAO.

I think admissions are the toughest for Indians and Chinese as internationals. Every college is deluged by Indian and Chinese applicants.. so it makes them hella selective. I'm also of Indian origin but I'll be considered a candidate from the UK.

and.. oh yeah, BUMP!

Thanks!

I was accepted at Colgate and Mount Holyoke today.. DHL and Fedex. But their offer of financial aid is not sufficient so.. I can't afford it. Anyway Midd is great!

There's this Cantonese saying..' three times bad luck, six times good luck.'

Bad Luck
1. rejected by MIT
2.lost $50, drivers license, IC .. my wallet went missing
3. rejected by FandM

Good luck
1. Accepted by Midd
2. Then, Macalester
3. Found my wallet!!!!!! So totally by chance

Colgate and MHC? ..not really. I can't go there anyway... cannot afford it.

So.. that leaves.. YALE AND HARVARD AND PRINCETON... haha.. I am getting so crappy..

By Roadking (Roadking) on Monday, March 29, 2004 - 04:29 am: Edit

How much did Colgate offer you in financial aid?

Congrats! anyway.

hey Ishan...Did.u Make it to Caltech.????

By Legolas (Legolas) on Monday, March 29, 2004 - 05:27 am: Edit

upandover.. by that token I'll have wayyy too much luck (about 18 times):
bad luck:
1. rejected at stanford
2. rejected at Tufts
3. rejected at Berkeley
4. accepted at Colgate.. measly financial aid
5. rejected at Lehigh
6. rejected at Lafayette
7. rejected at Middlebury
8. rejected at Connecticut College
9. rejected at MIT

Not even one bit of good luck so far, and I have only about 6 schools left that I'm waiting for. The safeties reject me because I'm too good for them but need money and the reaches reject me because I'm not good enough but they could afford the money, so that leaves the match schools, but oops.. I didn't have any matches!
It's surprising how F&M is delaying my rejection when everyone in the world has received it (I'm sure its a rejection). They're probably sending me a personalized rejection letter ;).

Hi there, I'm from Tokyo, Japan.
Anyone here heard from Haverford yet? Haverford is one of my top two choices - the other being Carleton - and I'd like to know when to expect to hear from them.

Congrats to all the acceptees and good luck to you all :)

By Upandover (Upandover) on Monday, March 29, 2004 - 09:12 am: Edit

I dunno about Haverford, Lehigh, Lafayette, Bates, Carleton, Brandeis, Georgetown.. as I didn't apply there... hmm.. does that answers everyone's posts? =) Waiting for Gettysburg.

Legolas,

who knows? you might get accepted to FandM after all.. Berkely (is that how you spell it) doesn't offer financial aid..

Tufts and Lehigh and Lafayette and Stanford have insane competition to get in if you are an international and need aid. So that's why. The others are... strokes of bad luck..

Wish you luck in the others. Don't take away mine though =) Need all I can get. You got into Colgate too right? So there's hope! They have a nice car sticker.

By Masataka (Masataka) on Monday, March 29, 2004 - 09:14 am: Edit

Hi Legolas -

I am so tired of waiting to hear from Haverford that I translated your quote into Japanese.

Bambutsu wo shihai-suru hitotsu-no testo,
Bambutsu wo mitsukedasu hitotsu-no testo,
Bambutsu wo anata-no moto-e mochihakobu hitotsu-no testo,
soshite sore wa yami-no naka-de subete wo hitotsu ni suru....
Naaanda? The SAT!

which means....

One Test to rule them all,
One Test to find them,
One Test to bring them all
and in the darkness bind them....
guess what? The SAT!

LEGOLAS:
' The safeties reject me because I'm too good for them but need money and the reaches reject me because I'm not good enough but they could afford the money, so that leaves the match schools, but oops.. I didn't have any matches! '

That is so true for the friend I was talking about.
Keep Your Spirits high!
Everyone gets in at some good place so even you will.

Nci... when were Caltech's reply's posted? Also, do you know whether they post all the acceptances first, then the rejections?

Flash, where are you from? :)

By Legolas (Legolas) on Monday, March 29, 2004 - 01:01 pm: Edit

Masataka.. just so you know.. this is a twisted version of a very famous dialogue from the film Lord of The Rings Fellowship of the Ring. I'm a huge fan of the book and movie series.

Upandover.. yea the car sticker is nice, but I'm concerned about toothpaste jokes so I'm not sticking it to my car... apart from the financial aid that's another reason I don't wanna go. I hope there are no more strokes of bad luck.. thanks for giving me hope :).

Thanks Iamthekid.. that's all I can do now :).

wow flash316... so many acceptances!

By Ishan (Ishan) on Monday, March 29, 2004 - 01:06 pm: Edit

I'm an international, too, and was accepted at Providence. However, they didn't say anything about fin aid, and what about you...

Upandover,

congratulations,Mountholyoke is a great school,I love it,but they have probably rejected me,because I have not received nything today...my friend was accepted almost full, she is so happy,I'm happy for her

Best of luck to everyone! :)

Ishan.. hang in there fella.. as Nci mentioned before, he's in Canada so he got his mail faster. But it sounds like a depressing place to spend 4 years..7:3 male:female ratio, and even that 30% is mostly girls who are not girls by most people's standards. MIT is better in that matter but they flat out rejected me.

No news from Georgetown here! But congratulations everyone on any of their good news :) I'm proud of all of us int'ls (although haha, I'm kind of a poser here as I'm actually a U.S. citizen). Doesn't Tufts offer ZER0 fin aid to int'ls though?
