i have never heard of babson college....

where is it?

By Shahab (Shahab) on Sunday, February 22, 2004 - 03:54 pm: Edit

i have it has the top business school for entrepereurship... i was thinking about applying there for undergrad transfer, but i decided against it

By Excusememixed (Excusememixed) on Sunday, February 22, 2004 - 04:13 pm: Edit

Babson is located in Massachusetts.

By Hollaratme (Hollaratme) on Sunday, February 22, 2004 - 06:21 pm: Edit

how is it

By Carolyn (Carolyn) on Sunday, February 22, 2004 - 10:25 pm: Edit

It's excellent if you are absolutely certain you want to do an undergraduate major in business. That's the only type of major there. Babson actually gets more company recruiters on campus each year than Harvard. It has an excellent reputation with corporations/businesses and is particularly strong in entrepreneurship.

By Hollaratme (Hollaratme) on Sunday, February 22, 2004 - 10:27 pm: Edit

nice... im certain i want to major in business (international) what kind of stats do you need

By Carolyn (Carolyn) on Monday, February 23, 2004 - 12:11 pm: Edit

Here are the acceptance stats for last year's freshman class:

2402 applicants
1153 accepted
81% ranked in top 25% of class
SAT median range:
Verbal 550-630
Math 600-690
Combined 1150-1320
TOEFL score required: 550 (paper), 213 (computer)
Average TOEFL of accepted students: 621 (paper)

Schools with a focus on business that are similar to Babson are Bentley (Also in MAss) and Bryant (Rhode Island) All have good reputations with employers.

By Hollaratme (Hollaratme) on Monday, February 23, 2004 - 03:34 pm: Edit

babson is way better though right?

By Bradknicks (Bradknicks) on Monday, February 23, 2004 - 05:12 pm: Edit

yeah babson is the best of the three, followed by bentley, and then bryant. They are all pretty similar though, so it is not exactly "way better"

By Studentoflife (Studentoflife) on Monday, February 23, 2004 - 06:00 pm: Edit

I, personally, would ponder this question: if Babson is that great of an entrepreneurial school, why doesn't the top management consulting firm (Bain and Company) have them listed on their college recruiting list-http://www.bain.com/bainweb/Join_Bain/undergraduate.asp ?

There is no better way of defining an entreprenuerial mind than management consulting, is there?

If you want a great consulting career with Bain and Company, that will likely propel you to investor banking, executive level, and independently wealthy positions... then you may want to consider Brigham Young University.

yah but those where graduate schools listed babson may only be good for under grad considering thats where most of their rank is on us news

By Studentoflife (Studentoflife) on Monday, February 23, 2004 - 06:30 pm: Edit

Wrong. The listing is on undergrad schools as stated in the link: http://www.bain.com/bainweb/Join_Bain/undergraduate.asp <---notice the last word here.

I'm just saying, pay more attention to other factors/variables, and not just US News CRAP.

It's good if you are certain you are going into business. There is no turning back, its hard to transfer out because the intergrated courses transfer out for less credits.

60% enter into finance related industry, with the rest being a mix management, marketing, and a small number persuing HR and system analyst fields. A solid amount end up working for their parents or their family business.

Only 5% actually persue starting their own business straight out college.

The campus culture is very different then any other school you will apply too.

By Babsonstudent (Babsonstudent) on Saturday, March 06, 2004 - 06:26 pm: Edit

Student Body
60/40 male to female (opposite of most schools)
25% international students

US-Mostly from New England area(majority of school), w/ a strangely high amount kids from Miami for some reason

Europe-every country essentially, pretty even

Asia- Mostly from Korea, Hong Kong, or Taiwain
South Asia- A lot of kids from India, Paki
Middle East- Mostly from Dubai, UAE

Highly conservative, two political groups are College Republicans and College Conservatives... none are really active... but it gives you an idea

After college- everyone ends up in Boston, NYC, or Miami

Be prepared for a lot of type A personalities :) hehe

Its essential to visit the campus and meet the kids to see if you could envision yourself there. Half the kids think it is their best decision of their life, the other half think it is their worst...
Opinions after college are significantly better, when people are getting paid, but in yr 1 and yr 2 expect a lot of all nighters

Kids can be described as...
confident / arrogant - depends on how you look at it

take of themselves / vain - No one comes to class wearing PJs. A lot of the guys are better dressed/ know more about fashion then the girls.

ambitious / greedy - the goal is become richer(b/c most already are already well off) 2 kids on campus drive Ferraris, most common car on campus is an X5. The undergrads have more money the MBA students, lol School can give you a warped perception of the world

You'll love it or hate it. Very important to visit the school if you are considering it, because you may hate it. I personally love it.

also note that as a town, wellesley blows

I have never been to such a boring town before.

Everything closes at 3.... 3PM that is

By Hollaratme (Hollaratme) on Monday, March 08, 2004 - 02:41 pm: Edit

wait i remb reading somewhere that thers alot of company recruiters at babson but now your saying everybody goes into family business?

By Babsonstudent (Babsonstudent) on Monday, March 08, 2004 - 03:35 pm: Edit

family business is mostly for the international student population, w/ some exceptions who like the states more than home, wherever that might be... although note that most of these "family businesses" are actually huge corporations, or factories... not Mom and pop stores. They just happened to be started by someone in the family and managament run mostly by relatives.

Most of the people from the US end up in the traditional corporate world of the US

By Hollaratme (Hollaratme) on Monday, March 08, 2004 - 05:21 pm: Edit

so the job placement is pretty good but how does it look for applying to business school after a couple of years of working

By Babsonstudent (Babsonstudent) on Monday, March 08, 2004 - 11:59 pm: Edit

If you want to go to business school your pretty much a sure shot to get into a good one. Kids generally place very well because they have a very strong quant. background, they perform very well on GMAT. (We have CPA / CFA programs too if you are interested in that) Although the majority choose not too go to business school if they are happy w/ job and pay.

You won't learn much most likely from an MBA after babson because you'll have all the technical skils and knowledge already. Only reason to go back is if you don't like your current job and want to switch careers or for general networking purposes which is a good reason in itself (IMO best reason to get MBA).

Although you could build a similar network at babson undergrad if you make an effort to meet people. Just don't stay stuck in your room and don't get stuck in a clique. If you make the first effort to talk to people, people generally respond very positively if you come w/ a smile on your face. If u come here, take advantage of getting to know alumni, they are more than willing to help you out and talk to you my 2cents

If you see college as a stepping stone for career aspirations, babson is a wonderful place. In addition to business, skills, networking, we have programs which analyze the way you work in groups, to improve social interactions.

Just be aware that there is a price to pay, while your friends are getting laid, skipping classes until finals, you will be doing a tremendous amount of work constantly. Maybe drinking a little too much on Thursdays, but friday to wed is school work, group meetings, clubs, working out, and little sleep. The professors have attendence policies, so you have to go to class and do assigned work for every class.

You'll have to carefully decide if the pluses outweigh the minuses. Babson is not one of those places where everyone will fit in. It is highly specialized for a certain group of people. good luck in your college search
