I don't know about an academic equivalent to American, but I know there are other universities/colleges in and around D.C. that you could check out like Mary Washington, Marymount, etc. I've heard American is a pretty good university, but I can't speak on behalf of it personally.

American has around a 72% acceptance rate. It depends on your definition of "good", but I heard it's pretty bad. You could try for George Mason, in VA; I think it's about the same level.

What about james madison? is that a selective school?

James Madison, George Mason, and American are not selective schools, but James Madison has a good music program. Georgetown is about the only D.C. school I can think of that one would consider "selective."

Actually, GMU and American are ranked close to one another. And when you factor in George Mason's Nobel Prize winning (2) economics professors, and its low out of state cost (14k to AU's 27k), GMU wins every day of the week.
