I've seen the US News reports. I wanna hear some international opinions. If you are an international student, then tell me. Of the eight ivies (Princeton, Yale, UPenn, Harvard, Cornell, Brown, Dartmouth, Columbia) plus MIT and Stanford, what would you say is the order of best-known to least-known in your country? Also, which country are you from?

I agree w/ Misanthrop. However, most people internationally do not recognize Columbia. I live in the US and never really knew it was any good till tenth grade. So, i agree with your first tier, second tier, i'd put Penn/Cornell/Columbia, and Brown/Dartmouth are unheard of!
By Weidamengxing (Weidamengxing) on Saturday, January 18, 2003 - 02:14 pm: Edit
i've never heard of Cornell, Dart,Brown,Penn before I came to the U.S. as a high school student.

where did my sunyanzi post go??????
By MisanthropI Lover on Saturday, January 18, 2003 - 02:35 pm: Edit
not bad. and, ironically, I found that Penn was more respected here than in the States. Not many people here would mistake it for a state school.
By lol on Saturday, January 18, 2003 - 02:37 pm: Edit
First Tier:
Harvard - i'm not saying its the best academically in all subjects, but its widely PERCEIVED as head and shoulders above everyone else. they stand ALONE at the top.
Second Tier:
Yale, MIT, Stanford, Princeton - great schools that may or may not be better than Harvard but internationally, they don't get the same level of fawning respect that Harvard garners.
Third Tier:
Cornell, Penn - large alumni base with excellent individual departments (hotel school, ag school, wharton, etc)
Fourth Tier:
Columbia - great school but simply not as well known as Cornell and Penn. whether this is deserved of not is not the issue...we're simply talking about name recognition. due to its smaller alumni base than Cornell and Penn, less people know of it. in fact, most people think Columbia is a school in the country Columbia, South America.
THATS IT. Most people mistakenly think that the above are the 8 Ivies! Yep, thats right, most people overseas think Stanford and MIT are Ivies.
mention Brown and Dartmouth and people will think that you couldnt make a "prestigious" school. whats brown and dartmouth?
By MisanthropI Lover on Saturday, January 18, 2003 - 02:42 pm: Edit
Addendum: People recognize Penn more often than Wharton. VERY FEW people in my school know about Wharton...But when I said it was the business school of Penn, they would say, oh..Penn...great.

By Carrro (Carrro) on Sunday, January 19, 2003 - 11:47 am: Edit
1. Harvard, definetly the most known.
2. Yale, I think most people would know too.
3. Princeton, Stanford & MIT, some people might recognise once they hear it.
4. Cornell, mabe some would recognise.
5. UPenn, Dartmouth, Brown & Columbia, hardly known at all.
I'm from Sweden

1. Harvard
I live in the U.S. However, I am Indian and visit India every year for 3 months. When I was talking to various people, I said something about my friend's acceptance into MIT, Stanford, Yale, Princeton, Brown,.....and Harvard. As soon as I said Harvard, everyone perked up. That is, by far, the most well known.

yope, i totally agree.... in peru... this is the responses youll get
(from the most well rounded ppl, i would say...most of the population, lamentably, i have to admit, barely will have heard about harvard only, if ever...)
1. HARVARD --- "wooooooooooooow, you're a genius"
2. YALE STANFORD MIT --- "oh, wait..i once hear about those...mmmm...yeah, congrats, i guess"
3. PRINCETON -- "oh, wasnt that guy in the fresh prince of bel air from princeont..i guess so...it must be a historically black college or....
4. CORNELL --maybe"
5. DARTMOUTH COLUMBIA PENN BROWN --- "hahahaha, you suck...what's brown? brown the color! marrón...hahahahahha"
yeah, this is true....
and im now living in brazil...so i can say that these both countries share the same opinions
By HEY on Sunday, January 19, 2003 - 01:04 pm: Edit
Gabypa I'd like to see you get into Brown, Columbia, Cornell Dartmouth or Penn, and most people don't really care if people in Peru have heard of their university or not. It's not like Peru is a dominating force in the world.

By Fire Fighter on Sunday, January 19, 2003 - 03:54 pm: Edit
Where I live Harvard is the top dog. If you are going to the US to study everyone presumes you are going to Harvard!
Then I would say Yale because of President Bush. Next, in order: 3. Princeton 4. Columbia and 5. UPenn and although not an Ivy I think Stanford is familiar to people as well.
As for all the rest I think very few people even know they exist especially Dartmouth and Brown. In fact, I was watching Providence with friends and I said, "Hey, that's where Brown University is!" and they were like "what's Brown University?" lol!
By Gabypa (Gabypa) on Sunday, January 19, 2003 - 04:16 pm: Edit
duke? they would say....duke?duke?duque? hahahahahahahah whats that...you suck even more...
really...sad but true

HARVARD is internationally recognized
And then in Europe, MIT, Yale, and Princeton
And in Asia, MIT, Stanford
AND more people should post the country they're from...

Duke is a good school, I wish I had applied
By strongwill on Tuesday, January 21, 2003 - 02:11 am: Edit
Well, Harvard is recognized everywhere. Even in UZBEKISTAN. (has anybody ever heard about my country?
) No MIT, no Yale, no Columbia, no Princeton, nothing...Absolute ignorance about these great schools. I personally think that edu in some of them is now better than in Harvard. I have a friend who will go to Yale, so when he tells people he got into US Uni (nobody knows what is Ivy), people ask - Harvard??? If it's anything other than Harvard, you are a loser
By Gabypa (Gabypa) on Tuesday, January 21, 2003 - 01:35 pm: Edit
hahaha i know....that's exactly what happens here. dude, how could harvard ever build such a name? EVERYONE VENERATES HARVARD its amazing...
