Discus: What Are My Chances?: January 2003 Archive: PSAT Thanks buds
By thanks on Thursday, January 16, 2003 - 08:43 pm: Edit

Just got PSAT scores in, i got a 197 composite thing and 95 percentile of juniors in the country. Is this good enough for National Merit Commended or Semi-finalist? I have no clue what score qualifies someone for it. If this score is abnormally low, please feel free to laugh and make fun of me bc of my low score that seems to go on quite a bit here. Thanks for the help.

197 is good. But not good enough for National Merit. If you're black, you could prolly get an award.

i'm from south carolina, a state with notoriously low test scores.

Still though, you usually need to score above 210 to even think about National Merit possibilities.

Not necessarily. I believe some states are in the 205-208 range. Possibly a 197 may be commended in your state. There was a listing a few months ago here - check the archives under "PSAT" from last fall. By the way, that's still a TERRIFIC score - be proud and try to get those SAT's to the 98-99th percentiles!

it isn't by my standards, because mine are very high. BONGGGGGGG!

a 197 is a strong score, but the commended cutoff (a national cutoff, not done state-by-state) is usually between 199 and 201. south carolina's semifinalist cutoff is around 207, i believe. the lowest semi cutoff i know of is in mississippi, where it's 204 or so.

I got a 226 last year and I wasn't a semifinalist. I'm going to go back into the closet to cry.

Bobdagod, yeah right, 226 is a semifinalist no matter what state you live in.
