I applied to 6 but part of that reason was because some were safety schools and the application fee was waived or reduced online. I could've easily taken out 3 of them and I would've been fine.

I applied to 6 but part of the reason was because they were safety schools and the application fee was either waived or reduced if I applied online. I could've easily only applied to 3 schools and I would've been fine, especially since I had only one school that would be considered a "reach" school. If you're only applying to Harvard, Yale, and Princeton, then yeah, that is too little. But if you've got a reach, match, and safety, then you should be fine.

The answer to your question lies in where you applied and what your stats were. If you, for instance, applied to a public institution where you know you're an automatic admit, and where you'd be thrilled to go, why apply to more schools if that's what you want and you know you'll get in?

If you applied only to 3 Ivies because you're class valedictorian and got a 1540 SAT, then you're probably in trouble.

i applied to 18 schools. It be a lot, but at least 14 of those schools are reaches. So hopefully one takes me

I only applied to 3 - all EA. I was limited to in-state public universities and there are only 3 that I felt would be really good places for me. Out of the 3, one was a safety, one was a match, one is a reach. I've been accepted to safety and match - still waiting to hear from the reach :-)

Three is fine, if you know you're going to get into one of them.

As others have said, it depends on your stats and which colleges you've applied to. If you and your counselor have determined that all 3 are "safeties" then 3 could be enough. However, if they are all "good math/50-50 shot" or "reach" schools, I would suggest applying to a few more, ideally safeties.
Good luck and best wishes!

I applied to only 2, because they were both safties for me.

By Tragicromantic (Tragicromantic) on Thursday, January 29, 2004 - 05:27 pm: Edit

i applied to 3. one match and 2 safeties. money is a big issue, not only for tuition...but i couldn't really afford more applications. either way, it doesn't really matter to me, heh.

to me it sounds like applying to 3 schools reduces your options. for example, if you only get into 1, you'll feel like you're stuck going there, not like going there was a choice you happily made. also, importantly, you have few financial aid packages to consider. what if only 1 accepts you, and don't offer you enough money?

By Facch886 (Facch886) on Thursday, January 29, 2004 - 10:22 pm: Edit

well if you spell it as "to little"...instead of "tOO little" then three schools might actually be "to" many
