What are my chances for UC-Berkely:
Out of state, Hispanic male. SAT=1150, GPA=3.5. Few EC, no sports.
By nope on Wednesday, January 15, 2003 - 01:10 pm: Edit
No chances..need to bring the SAT to at least a 1300 for out of state URM..plus you gotta take the SAT II's.
By I Love Racism and AA on Wednesday, January 15, 2003 - 01:24 pm: Edit
Why do you think you deserve to take the place of a 1400 SAT, 3.8 GPA non-Hispanic person at UC Berk with the amount of effort you have put in?
By duser on Wednesday, January 15, 2003 - 01:26 pm: Edit
I think you have a good chance. UC does not look at SAT that closely; if at all
By andrew on Wednesday, January 15, 2003 - 01:33 pm: Edit
"Why do you think you deserve to take the place...?" Because obviously I am less of a jerk than you are!

"Why do you think you deserve to take the place...?"
How are you so sure he would "take the place" of a 1400 SAT non-Hispanic person?? If that non-Hispanic person were good enough for Berkeley, he would get in without question.
By quarky on Wednesday, January 15, 2003 - 06:46 pm: Edit
LOL, is this a joke? With such scores AND being an out-of-state applicant, you have no chances at all! Besides, you don't even know how to spell the name of the school correctly.
By benito on Wednesday, January 15, 2003 - 07:24 pm: Edit
I must concur with quarky
By white man on Wednesday, January 15, 2003 - 07:56 pm: Edit
He's hispanic. Therefore he's in.
By me on Wednesday, January 15, 2003 - 08:10 pm: Edit
Well, I think you should learn to spell the school's name correctly before you think about applying. It's UC B-E-R-K-E-L-E-Y
By adrasteia on Wednesday, January 15, 2003 - 08:13 pm: Edit
The average GPA for CAL is like 4.0+... you won't make it.
You'll get into some of the lower UC's.

"The average GPA for CAL is like 4.0+..." How in the hell do you get a 4+. When A=4, B=3, C=2 ...?
By the way, thanks for the spelling correction BERKELEY. Now that I know how to spell it I am sure I'll get in!

because Berkeley weights your GPA based on honors classes.
By adrasteia on Wednesday, January 15, 2003 - 09:38 pm: Edit
durr... If you didn't know that APs/honors give you an extra GPA point, I really don't think you'll be getting in.
Stop trying to be so hostile; I was merely stating a fact. You were looking for advice, so we gave it to you.
Like I said, it's true that you don't have a chance at UCB, based on what you gave us anyway, but you have good chances at other UC's, such as riverside or irvine.
By UCs ROCK on Wednesday, January 15, 2003 - 09:43 pm: Edit
joseph and andrew, you guys have almost no chance of getting in, URM or not.
UC does not look at your ethnicity since it's a California public school (proposition 209 eliminated AA in California). The UC system will consider your hardships, if you wrote about it in your essay. UCs put more weight on your SAT IIs and GPA than your SAT, but you still have to have a good SAT if you even want to be competitive (esp. if you're out-of-state)
UCs are cheap for CA residents, don't favor URMs, and are among the best colleges in the nation. How much better can it get??

"durr... If you didn't know that APs/honors give you an extra GPA point, I really don't think you'll be getting in." ... hole! my school does not offer APs/honors courses, thus I have no reason to know this.
If you want to give advice, as you claim, leave the personal attacks out. We all know different things and see the world very differently, that is why AA is sometimes needed. I grew up in a war torn country in Central America. You do not know everything about life, regardless of your SAT scores! Not everyone has the same privilege up bringing.
By me on Thursday, January 16, 2003 - 01:30 am: Edit
Hahah andrew hold up. He just criticized you for not knowing about AP classes, and you replied:
"leave the personal attacks out. We all know different things and see the world very differently, that is why AA is sometimes needed. I grew up in a war torn country in Central America. You do not know everything about life, regardless of your SAT scores! Not everyone has the same privilege up bringing."
Dude, don't you think that response is a little over the top? Talk about melodramatic. But hey, if you can whine that much about your upbringing just when you're responding to someone talking about AP classes, just imagine how sympathetic you'll be on your college essay.
By Adrasteia on Thursday, January 16, 2003 - 02:59 am: Edit
haha ...someone needs to chill and take their vitamin pill. don't know wtf Spazzy here is babblin' about.
Here's an idea, why don't you go whine to the governor about AA being illegal, instead of to me?
“I grew up in a war torn country in Central America.”
*yawn* blah blah The Woebegone Tale Of The Poor Immigrant Family. Like we haven't heard that one before. It's annoying as hell when narcissistic teens, with regular internet access, bitch and moan about their former poverty, which, usually, their parents took the full brunt of. Grow up. Go read Chateaubriand's "Rene"; you’ll see your egocentric self mirrored in the protagonist.
"You do not know everything about life, regardless of your SAT scores! Not everyone has the same privilege up bringing."
Allow me to impart to you what I DO know about life. See, the difference between you and me, is that I took something from my background. I worked hard to bring myself up, so that I don’t HAVE to go to a school with no AP courses. You can sit around and whine all you want about your circumstances, but if you don’t take anything from them, then you’ll never get anywhere. Cept for posting fake messages on this board... he's so incoherent I can't even tell whether or not he's a poser.

Hey andrew listen up ok. You grew up in a war torn central american country? My grandparents were in concentration camps, who had it worse? the thing is they didn't whine about it. When they got out they moved to america, got jobs and raised there families. My dad ended up getting a Ph.D, apparently being the son of former concentration camp inmates didn't stop him, did it? And it was a little harder pulling yourself out of poverty 35 years ago than it is now, so just relax.

whats a URM? i mean i know it means an out of state applicant but what precisely does it stand for?
By dogboy on Thursday, January 16, 2003 - 12:50 pm: Edit
An URM is not an out of state applicant. It is a person who is a minority:black, hispanic or native american.
