i heard that my school is a very prestigious public school but can u say that it's prestigious compared to really good private schools

the avg SAT score in my school is about 1250
about 20~30% go to the Ivy's
last year about 65 people went to cornell...

By dxiw on Monday, January 13, 2003 - 07:51 pm: Edit

65?!?!?!

not bad..

By Ann85 (Ann85) on Monday, January 13, 2003 - 08:00 pm: Edit

By a cornellian myself on Monday, January 13, 2003 - 08:01 pm: Edit

65, ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?!? HOW MANY KIDS WERE IN THE GRADUATING CLASS?

By Justwannahelp (Justwannahelp) on Tuesday, January 14, 2003 - 02:00 am: Edit

your school sounds extremely prestigious to me.

By whatsup on Tuesday, January 14, 2003 - 02:07 am: Edit

dang...65 ppl to cornell? ur school sounds prestigious...our sat average is about 1250 as well, but only about 4 ppl go to ivies each year.

By ddd on Tuesday, January 14, 2003 - 02:24 am: Edit

he...at my school the average is 1430. no kidding.

By lol on Tuesday, January 14, 2003 - 02:27 am: Edit

hmmm...

you sound like you're from stuyvesant high school. i can answer your question for you...yes, stuy is very prestigious accross the board but it still does not have the power of the traditionally great prep schools of the northeast.

i went to prep school while 2 of my sisters attended stuy so i know all about stuy's 15 to harvard, 15 to yale, 60 to cornell, etc. but look at the OVERALL percentages. stuy graduates 700 students per year and roughly 250 make top 25 colleges...meaning around a 36% success rate. this is phenomenal for a public school! most public schools in the country struggle to get 1 student into an ivy, whereas stuy regularly sends over 100 each year!

now, look at the websites for schools like a andover academy, a milton academy, st paul's (http://www.sps.edu/beyond_sps/college_prep/default.asp?id=2006)...etc. its not unheard of when these prestigious prep schools send 70% to the top 25. sure, stuy may send 100 kids to the ivy league and st paul's may "only" send 50 a year but stuy graduates 700 students while st paul's graduates only 125!

let me put it another way, during one banner year at st paul's, 80 out of 125 students made ivy! if you went to stuy and finished in the bottom HALF of your class...do you have a shot at harvard, stanford and yale? most likely not. if you went to st paul's and finished in the bottom half, you'd still have a great shot at most ivies, including harvard, yale and princeton.

By SoCal on Tuesday, January 14, 2003 - 03:48 pm: Edit

mine: school in southern california. 693 total seniors

1130 sat... less than 50% pass AP with 3 but 100% taking Calculus BC last year passed with 4's and 5's...only 1 girl got into Yale in history, but went to berkeley...last year school sent about 87 students to UCLA, 58 to berkeley, 13 USC, 2 NYU...valedictorian waitlisted and then rejected by Stanford (is at berkeley right now)

i'm from scarsdale (westchester) in newyork

By Liz (Liz) on Tuesday, January 14, 2003 - 06:08 pm: Edit

hah... my high school's SAT average is probably pretty low, but I don't know it. We have a very good AP pass rate though, and offer nearly every one. Last year we had one to Brown, one to Yale, one to Princeton, and one to Dartmouth. that's around 1% to the ivies, pretty good for a public in NC.

By Cru (Cru) on Tuesday, January 14, 2003 - 10:32 pm: Edit

Wow...
I didn't know that my school sucks....
last year...
1 columbia
1 UPenn(didn't go because of the money)
about 30% to community college...
Guess my class rank doesn't mean much...

By cheapy school on Tuesday, January 14, 2003 - 11:02 pm: Edit

ok my school is the suckiest of all (im not exagerating)

hispanic majority 98%...basically any white my school is a teach, inner city, san antonio,tx
low performing, low income

Average SAT: 770
Average ACT: 15

About 70% go on to college...30% workforce
of that 70%:
75% go to community college (San Antonio College)
15% go to UTSA
5% go to local private universities avg SAT 800
and 5% go outside to schools like UT Austin, A&M, and some crappy far off state schools. about 3 go out of state each year. one guy last year went to Duke with a 1330 SAT, which was the highest score ever.

my school in Southern Cali:
last year 1 went to Stanford, 70% of seniors w/ 1250+ sat went to UCLA ... the rest to Berkeley. the previous year, 2 went to Dartmouth, 1 accepted at Princeton (didn't go, money prob.), 3 NYU, 1 Stanford. damn, i guess not many cali students go to ivies...at least stanford is in cali...

By BritGuy on Wednesday, January 15, 2003 - 12:14 am: Edit

100% of my graduating class of 46 went to either cambridge or oxford...i had to settle for a major in classics, which has been hell...i'm on my third year at oxford...saw chelsea clinton yesterday at GAP store

Has anyone here ever heard of Lowell High School in San Francisco? I'm just curious if anybody knows it at all.

By Thedad (Thedad) on Wednesday, January 15, 2003 - 12:34 pm: Edit

Hey, SoCal...what's your high school?

Profile sounds similar to Santa Monica High.

By Magnet Man on Wednesday, January 15, 2003 - 02:31 pm: Edit

Lowell High School is supposedly one of the top schools in the nation. A group of Chinese Americans won the Anti- AA battle a few years ago because the school imposed a rule where it could only maintain 40% Chinese or something like that because if it were banned, the school would be 80% Chinese.

By eal on Wednesday, January 15, 2003 - 05:50 pm: Edit

How did you hear about the school?

By lol on Wednesday, January 15, 2003 - 05:55 pm: Edit

getting back to the topic at hand, the best ivy league feeders are nearly all private schools. notice that well over 90 out of the top 100 schools are private (http://www.worth.com/content_articles/display/articles.cfm?id=04%2CFTVY%2A%3C7%21R%2BB%3BVEQ%3FNF%22%40%20%20%0A&tid=)!

look at roxbury latin! forget about needing to finish valedictorian...just finish! top 20% not only gets you into an ivy...it gets you into the top ivies...namely harvard, yale or princeton. if we were to count all 8 schools, the success rate would be 86%! imagine! just finish top 86% in high school and you're an ivy leaguer!

By mit_hopeful on Wednesday, January 15, 2003 - 06:24 pm: Edit

my school REALLY SUCKS. last year, i think we had 30-40% of the graduating class going to college and about 80% of those people were headed for the comm. college. i think our average is somewhere around 850 to 900. out of my graduating class this year, i think i am the only one in my school even APPLYING to any ivies or elite schools (MIT). and i don't know about anyone in past classes ever going to an ivy. does school background help or hurt you? or do they even look at it?

By damn on Wednesday, January 15, 2003 - 06:40 pm: Edit

Oh man, my schools is ranked in the 200's!!!! What, I thought I was going to the top public school in MA. If I don't get into more than two ivy leagues, I'm going to be so pissed off.

I hate you guys...
Please....
Don't list these stuff...
I can understand that you're in a very presitigous school or whatever which has like at least 100 students going to the ivy league or whatever...

By northeastprep on Thursday, January 16, 2003 - 02:14 am: Edit

by the way...two kids with B- averages got into harvard (one was legacy, one wasn't, but he was black). So i guess that's how low you can go officially and still get in.

At my school in Hawaii, 100% of the graduating class goes off to college. About 50% go to Ivies or the prestigious lib. arts colleges. Avg. SAT is about a 1300.
