What are my chances at Duke University, NYU Stern, UMD (I live in Maryland), Penn. State, University of Virginia. Thanks so much

I'd say Duke is a fairly big reach. I don't knwo enough about those other schools to rate them though.

Duke is a fair match. You're good at the other schools.

thanx JOh! i might if i get a scholarship. I am the best of anyone that i know in cross country. I can run 3 miles in like 16 minutes. Plus i am highly resistant to pain so i like going to practice. I like to push my body to new heights. I like anything that involves competition, even if it was who can cut the grass first. seriously, i love to win.

am i the only one who saw "first in family to go to college"? that alone gives you a good shot at all the schools you stated, and your great GPA and good standardized scores and good EC's boost your chances even higher..

do u really thinks so? Does "first in the family" matter that much?

first generation college-bound students are given extra consideration especially if they are classified as URM. what is your expertise? cross country? if you are division I quality, initiate contact with coaches. maybe they can put in a good word for you, but don't count on this too much.
i think duke is a big reach, NYU middle reach, UVA match/reach, and UMD and Penn State safeties. i read a book written by a former duke admissions officer...the book says that 90% of BWRKs (bright, well-rounded kids) are not offered admission...one has to stand out in one particular area...in your case, this area may be cross country. you've got potential...just work especially hard on your essays!

Your stats are good, but they could be better. SInce you're into track and all, you should really stress that on your college application.
Just do a good job on your apps and i think you'll be fine.
